Hello anwar, probably I am still not searching at the right place  :violent:. I did find some Indian sties on this forum from where I can buy one, but they seems to be very expensive . Even items on ebay.in is very expensive. The cost of having one shipped from outside india seems much cheaper ;D. After having searched online I did find three address in bangalore one in commercial street, one somewhere near ulsor and one in indrinagar I believe, but could never visit them.

Anyway thanks to this forum {:)}, I now have found couple of sites to procure it online. I have already added couple of blades :giggle: and battery into my cart. I am sure I will need them.
We fly heli not because it is easy, it is difficult!

Ahhh! Inspired by VC's story I am compelled to write my own! May not be as flowing or well narrated as VC but nevertheless here it is.
A small town boy from Ranchi, heard his dad narrate stories of him flying full scale gliders and talk about his instructorr in the air wing NCC during his college days. The flame was perhaps kindled and the boy tried to make gliders out of broom sticks and pieces of wire but to no avail. From there on it was cardborad contraptions strapped on with pyrotechnic rockets in a hope that these would take off but again to no avail.
Then one day happened to visit a common friend who was into static models made out of thermocole, I was hooked and after repeated visits one fine day the guy showed me a Kiel Kraft free flight glider and a Webra 3.2 cc diesel, thes were like gems to me more precious than Kohinoor, I could only touch and feel them and be satiated for the time.
The guy was studying at St Xaviers School Ranchi, where a gentleman Rev Father Lombard used to teach the students aeromodelling on his own expenses, these articles were gifted to the common friend when he passed out of school.
From this common friend I managed to get the address of India's Hobby centre, Calcutta. But then being in Std 8th did not help. I had the address preserved like a treasure. After completing my 10th class in 1988 I visited Calcutta where a relative stayed. My first foray out of Ranchi all alone and what do I do first thing after putting up with the relative? Head out to Hobby centre with the tattered piece of paer which had the address on it. Asking directions land up at Hobby centre and wow! I was like Alice in wonderland. Oggling at all the goodies there and my brain calculating the money I had been given for the trip, thinking ways and means so that maximum could be spent on goodies in the shop.
Met Mr. Tapan (same as mentioned by VC) at the counter and showed me around, finally I ended buying a Chaser rubber powered (in todays terms it would be an ARF), a Me 109 chuck glider and and kit for Yellow bird. On further persuading Mr Tapan he took me upstairs to one Mr Kumar, on being ushered into his cabin, this lad of all 17 years mustered all his charm and ingreji he could, and announced to Mr Kumar that he wanted to learn more about flying planes and would India Hobby Centre have any such facility? The gentleman smiled, make me sit down gave me some magazines to read (all concerning aeromodelling) and thereafter explained that they did not have any such facility. The gentleman was Mr Ravi Kumar, son of Mr Suresh Kumar (who can truly be described as grandfather of this hobby in India).
Anyway having blown up my allowance on the three planes I did not have much to do in Calcutta and soon returned thereafter to Ranchi.
First thing after being back was to get the Chaser and Me 109 ready (just slot them in together ) and start flying them, no knowledge of aerodynamic and no internet to support your quest for information it was plain simple experimentation which taught quite a lot to me. However my experiments soon bore the unintend result where both the models met thier demise.
Meanwhile the Yellow Bird kit had few pages of instructions and reading and re-reading those pages gave me some rough idea on what to do with the wood pieces . The model was soon assembeled using fevicol (much heavy compared to other glues) and was ready for test flight. So it was one calm summer eveining the model was taken out with lot of fanfare (to show off to friends) to the local field, where it was launched into the tail wind with full stretch of the rubber band supplied. Off she went high up, ran out of steam, put her nose down, dived for a couple of second and then straightned out to repeat the process again. (looking back now I know it was tail heavy). The model stayed in the air for about 9-10 seconds but boy! was I elated? I was on cloud nine top of the world, a hero in my own eyes and envy of my friends. I had built a plane it had flown. This model used to be aired out almost daily during the early morning and late evening hours when the winds were calm, couple of times picked up quarrel with other users of the field as some one dared touch my prized posession.
That was the begining in this fascinating hobby, which has taught me a lot, and continues to do so each day. Gave me oppurtunities to make friends from across the globe and learn from them.

Will continue the story further as and when I am able to post

Capt, That was was a pleasant surprise to see your post here. Loved reading all the way through and hope you will continue here soon !
Seems to inspire me to write my own story too. One day I will !
Thanks for sharing your story once again.

VC

Awesome! Fyingboxcar, you took me back a looong way as I read your story. So nostalgic - Tapan and Rishi (You met Ravi, probably a younger brother of Rishi) and India Hobby Centre. Why does the past always seem so beautiful? Did you know that the Yellow Bird is still available? I have a Hangar mate of your Me 109 - The Mitsubishi Zero! The Me 109 was yellow and rust maroon, the Zero is green. They also had a P 51 Mustang in silver. All these combined were inferior to the Original Spitfire in natural wood finish with black lines and markings.

I have requested Rishi to let me have one Spitfire if he can find one, maybe I will get lucky.

I am so happy that I found someone like you here. You've touched my heart.

God bless!

Gaurav, will do as work and other issues including the pending completion of 40 size Tiger Moth have kept me occupied.
But as committed by you, why not let us all hear yours?

VC,
Yes as said in my post it was Ravi Kumar. My next post would tell you how I got introduced to Rishi, (who, today I can call  a good friend).
BTW I still have a yellow bird kit stashed away, when I need to build one, use the plan cut parts from good quality balsa, ply and spruce and make one. These fly much better than the ones made out of locally supplied wood. Yes I do remember all the P 51, Zero, and Spit apart from the Me 109.
These and the rubber powered Chaser, and the folding wing interceptor were American design. I have a magazine in some where which I need to pull out to find the names of the designer.

In fact, Rishi and I were talking just the other day and reminiscing the good times. I really want to go down to Cal once and visit the old place and see if I can find any of the old stuff to keep as milestones of Memory Lane.

Cheers!

This is my 30 year experimental story-------(MORAL- anything and every thing flies)
As a kid was facinated with planes. Poor dad, so statred models in cardboard, for that matter any thing thar resembelled an aeroplane. Built static helis from small papayas, and ship models from banana plant skins also. Mom called me a "kabadi" (trash collector). At hyderabad, came in touch with Mr Anwar (AMI NCC) as teenager. Built my first sheet thermocloe plane (Rs 20/-) that time and test flew at the military farm on the way to Medchal. Successsssss...................... That was a go. Worked hard and became a professional pilot (no details to share) and now on the B-737 NG. Bought my first futaba skysport in 1998. Lots of kitbuilding and modifications to suit my availability. Was in contact with Mr Sharma senior of sharma models Jodhpur( form C/L to rc flying. Ever the passion became strong for models. Time to experiment more. became intrested in electric rc. Went to US bought spd 400,batt pack props abd ESC from tower hobbies. A friend gave me an ORPHAN XBM-11 heli without a TX. Tried tweaking the electronics for a month. No gain, pulled out the motors and built a DORNIER 228 from styrofoam (hi density) from airconditioner packings ( sad, people don't know what styrofoam can do......Its gold for me). However the xbm-11 batt pack burnt the ESC (25$ in drain). Ordered an ESC 40A on ebay HK, got it for nuts (Rs 450/-) proven and tested. Would love to interact with pros and novices in delhi. I live in the model ac world- a world of my own, so all are welcome to my planet.............happy landings.

VC

That Dornier is beautiful!  :salute:

I agree with you on the high density styrofoam bit. It IS gold!!!

Cheers!

My sad Story
Today was the first day of my flight(Maiden Flight) i had built a 3D model and it crashed .
can any one advice me on how to hand launch the plane and basic of flying
im gonna upload the pic of my plane tomorrow

anwar

Wow ! Looks like you did not follow the time tested rules like having a high winger first, and trying to seek local help on your first flight.  If you are in Mumbai, lots of help should be available.  These rules/tips exist to maximize the chances of first time success.  But I am sure you will recover from all this, especially since you started with a model you built yourself

my rc story
briefly-
one fine day a 6th std. boy(me) was surfing rc videos on youtube when he came across the rcpowers   f117 bomb drop video and started following Dave Powers.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u20RzrrP5i0
Watching his videos for around 20 days was enough for him to decide to make planes(rc only :giggle:).Took time to convince father (nearly 15-25 days? :banghead:).now i am in class 8 and am addicted to rcpowers videos still  :giggle:

Me too.It is hard to convince dads to do this sort of stuff and especially when you are in 10th.(me)Finally,I have convinced him ;).But it did take a lot to get there.I will have to make some sacrifices such as letting the comp out of my room :(.But totally worth it.And who cares when I can get the internet whenever I want to? ;D ;D ;D

rcfoamcrafters

Over the past several years, I gained a great interest in foam RC aircraft from visiting forums and doing alot of reading and experimenting. Since I had a stack of 1/2" x 4' x 8' sheets to insulate my atttic with, I thought it would look better in the air than somewhere where nodody could see it. I also had 2 bundles of fanfold that was supposed to be used for insulating. With all that on hand, my scratchbuilding started. I crashed plenty and always came back home and got back to the drawing board and developed something different.

The biggest problem I had in the beginning, was my flying field. The only place I knew of at the time that didn't have many people there during the day, was a Sports Complex, by our local school. 3 ball diamonds (now 4) meaning lots of fences tall light posts all surrounded by trees. Not good for foam. Story continued....http://www.downloadzgalore.com/rcplans

This RC bug sting me long back in 1993 when I saw air show in Nasik.

All flyers were using engine powered planes. Unfortunately I didn't talk to any of the flyer.

After that journey was begin to find way to get a small size engine which I could fit to plane.

That made me discussing with many garage mechanics just to realized that those engines were "Special" and will not get easily here in India.

This forced me to think of way to power plane without engine ... and thought came in mind about using electric motor.

Due to financial constrains it was not possible to purchase a dc motor but fortunately I meet a friend whose bro was doing TV, Tape repairing.

From his scrap I got my first DC motor. I tried to create a plane but it was too much heavy too take off from ground .

For time being I changed my focus and created my first DC motor car which use to just run circular ... and then DC powered boat and then I found the gear system from mechanical clock.

From my experience till that point I know the importance of gear system and tried to use it with my motor but motor power was enough to move the mechanical gears of clock and ones again I changed my focus and created a crane out that clock gears.

Once I found a burned PCB hard drive and. I know that the hard dive motor runs more than 1000 RPM ... one of my friend told that you need more than y 600 RPM to fly so I thought this motor should definitely work .

With loot of efforts and hard work (it's not that difficult ... but I was not having right tools) I took out motor and got full confused as it has 3 leads.

All DC equipment I saw by that time had only 2 lead (except 2 in 1 LED)

I tried to power it with set of cell I had but it vibrate a little and no action... and failure again...

Then after 10 years latter .... one fine day my company send me to US and purchased my first indoor heli for 29$ ... and I was so happy with it ... but son I realize that it have very limited controls and you can't do much with it.

In 2010 sep I got another onsite opportunity and this time I had enough money to spend on one RTF kit and when I told this to one of my friend about this he requested me to bring one for him too.

So I brought 2 planes "piper cub" and "EXCEED-RC ACCIPITER BADIUS" and I was on the top of word one again.

I charge my glider battery and whet to open ground  ... when I used to give full throttle motor used to stop ... but due to my impatience I hand launch my glider with half throttle only to crash and broke the folding prop.

With sad mood whet back to home ...then I realized  that battery was not getting charged and brought 12 V charger to charge my NiMh battery.

Then tested full throttle and it worked  on next weekend went to small field and tested my glider and it went 100 M up in the air and started dropping wing and I was just freezed and watching helplessly.

As you could guess I crashed very badly... wings were broken .. then me and my friend tried to flew the piper cub but we even crashed that ...

Finally when I came to know about Pune Airomodelers Association and meet Sandeep (He is really DON in this field)there. He flow the fixed glider very nicely.

As both planes are having brushed set up they are pretty heavy considering the thrush they generate so  thinking about upgrading to brushless setup.

Till now I learned following things.

1) If you want to get into RC first find the local club and meet as many ppl as you can related to this hobby

2) Don't fly without Sr. flyers supervision  ... patience dude

3) Take advise and help from Sr. flyers

4) Don't use brushed setup

5) Use http://www.rcindia.org .... well I know you already doing that ....but just in case  you have not resisted to site yet :)

Thank you,
Atul
