K K Iyer

Hi everyone,
Been long since I posted a build log.
After the demise of my much loved Spitfire, and retirement of my 60% Curare,
I had been wanting to build a Mustang.

It finally took inspiration/ encouragement/ goading from sanjayrai55 to get me started.
So here goes...

K K Iyer

Took approximate dimensions from a 60 year old Fred Reese design from outerzone.uk
(Thanks SteveWMD)
Did a rough sketch. Then a better full scale drawing. Pics 1 & 2.
Then copied to depron, and cut!

Unfortunately, the depron was only 5mm, unlike the Spitfire's 8mm.
So added fuselage doublers. Pic 3.
A 15mm thickness should give a more rounded look...

And the 5mm depron is curved.
Just look at the wing blanks. Pic 4.

Will decide tomorrow what to do.

sanjayrai55

Looks like it's coming out really well. Wow! The wing curve. How did you manage that so accurately?

K K Iyer

I didn't manage it. It's the problem. Have to flatten to avoid warped wings!

Meanwhile progress on fuselage. With cutouts to avoid too many items creating drag.
Still undecided whether to glass it or not...

Is this depron sir ?
It's all about beging in air

Wing carve?  :headscratch:
No carving involved.
Wing curve?
Not a design feature. Just a fault of the raw material.

rastsaurabh

KK sir, Is this pure depron ? or the newly available compressed thermacole from stationary shop.

If its compressed thermacole how is the strength?

K K Iyer

It's depron.
Not come across compressed thermocol yet.

Build planes like feathers rather than tanks, both handle bullets equally well.

It is highly inefficient to spend dozens/hundreds of hours on simple Foamies that can be built in 2-3 hours.

Unless of course you have all the time in the world, enjoy building from scratch, drawing your own sketches and plans, spending hours on each step, and thinking of more and more unnecessary complications as you go along.

Like using a router bit in a Dremel for grooving hardwood landing gear mounts for a model that doesn't even need an undercarriage. After annealing an old steel coat hangar to bend into U/C legs...

And I haven't even thought of a steerable tailwheel yet  ;D

sahilkit

So we can expect chrome plating on steel coat hanger under carriage..... ;)
Today might be a great and wonderful day. It depends on you.

Sir how you corrected that curve on wings?

K K Iyer

Thanks Rai saheb, Bhanu, Neil, Kamal, Sukhpreet, Gaurang, Sahil and SI74.

Harshit, i thought the 5mm CF spar would straighten the curve in the depron, but my workmanship was not good enough. So cut the spar out and started again.

Using the opportunity to add more unnecessary complications like hardwood spar for mounting undercarriage, wing tips, false trailing edge of balsa, replacing depron with balsa for ailerons etc...

Guess I just like to fiddle around!

K K Iyer

Hope I can complete for tomorrow afternoon flying!

Looks fun!
May I ask what electronics you used?

2 years sitting on top of the bookshelf 90% complete
Because though it looks good enough in photos, the finish is fairly bad when seen close up.
Too embarrassed to take it to the field, so parked on the bookshelf.
Don't even remember the wing bottom was yellow, must have peeled it of sometime.

Well, since I haven't done anything new in quite a while, perhaps it's time for this Mustang!
The wings flex a bit, so I fear they may flutter...
Proof next Sunday, hopefully

Well, I'm pretty inspired, now that you've put an end to procrastination. Almost the same story with me.

My first quad build, in pretty bad condition, and I had always wanted to restore it to good health. But I was heavily procrastinating.
Now that I've got a fellow member who's doin' it, I'll also finish that by the end of this week.

Thanks for the push! :)
