Mr.MOSS 46" Kit Build Guide

Generally I don't like planes like Slow Stik and other such models which use a tube for a fuselage because I think they are ugly. However Mr.MOSS has an undefinable Charisma of its own and I finally gave in. But I didn't want to buy the stock kit which is being sold in two configurations, as an ARF which included everything except the Radio and as a RTF which included a Radio System as well. I wanted the Basic Airframe with all hardware and a motor and an ESC of my own choice .So I emailed Mr.Sai whether he could supply Mr.MOSS in my configuration and on receiving his email that he would supply as I wanted, I placed my order.I placed my order on Sunday night and received the package on Tuesday morning. :)

This is my first Indian made model kit.All my other planes were imported from USA. This is also my first CORO plane. There is no need to tell what the packing is like The pix below explain themselves.

I ordered the following from Sai.

1. Mr.MOSS 46" wing span basic air frame consisting of the following:
    1. Fiber fuselage boom.
    2. CORO Wing panels and Tail Feathers.
    3. Wing polyhedral braces-4 no.
    4. Control Horns-2 no.
    5. Push rods-2 no.
    6. Screw Lock Push rod connectors.
    7. Square Carbon Rod for wing reinforcement.
2. GWS 28A Stick Motor Mount with Mounting Hardware.
3. Dong Yong 2212/10 Brushless Out Runner Motor.( X mount, Mounting Hardware and 3mm Prop adapter and one GWS
    8x6 Propeller are included)     
4. Dong Yong Brushless 20 Amp ESC.
5. Fiberglass Tape.
6. Heat Shrink Tube ( 3 colors each 50 cm long ).

While going through the contents of the package I noticed that the carbon wing spar is missing. I immediately contacted Sai and he apologized for overlooking and told me that he would send the carbon wing spar immediately.And he also informed me that kabab sticks too can be used to strengthen the wing. Then I told him that even kabab sticks are not available in local market. I received the CF Rod package two days later and was surprised to find a pack of 100 kabab sticks also included. Sai informed me that the cost of the sticks would be collected on my next order. Now that is what I call Customer Service. Thank You very much Sai {:)}

I used the following from my own supply:

1. Hitec Micro 05S FM 72MHz full range SC Rx  with 34Ch Crystal.
2. Power HD 9gm Servos - 2 no.
3. Servo extension cable for the ESC.
4. Double sided foam tape.
5. Some velcro
6. Zip Ties
7. Medium CA
8. Zippy 3S 11.1 volt 1050 mAh, 20C , Li-Po Battery Pack.

great rao uncle looking forward to your guide one more thing i am designing a breakaway motor mount that is much like the prop saver so no damage to motor too

The tools used in this build are:
1.Star and Slot tipped Screw Drivers.
2.Nose and Std Pliers.
3.Razor Saw.
4.Steel Ruler 24"
5.Set square.
6.Hobby Knife with #11 blade.
7.Soldering Iron.
8.Rubber Bands.
9.Fine File
10.Fine emery cloth.

Well let us start the build.

The first thing to do is join the two sections of fuselage boom. For this we need a small square wooden peg of about 1.5" long.This peg should be of such thickness that it fits snugly in the hole in the fiber boom.Not too tight and not too loose.Just the right Fit.
The two fiberglass sections to be joined. The wooden peg is inserted into one end of one boom halfway and CA is applied and then the remaining portion of the peg is inserted into the other section of the boom and CA is applied. While joining the fuselage boom use a straight edge to make sure that the boom is straight.

Next we mount the motor mount to the fuselage end. First we fit the motor mount temporarily and drill mounting holes using the correct size drilling bit and a hand drill or small power drill.Then remove the mount and clean the holes using emery cloth.

Next measure the fuselage length and trim it to 30" using a fine tooth razor saw and clean and smoothen the end with fine emery cloth.
Now mark the centerline on fuselage boom and on the horizontal stabilizer.Using a set square to make sure that the stabilizer is square to fuselage align the center lines on fuse and stabilizer and glue them using CA glue.

Now let us mount servos temporarily with rubber bands to find the correct position of control horns on rudder and elevators.Also install screw lock connectors on servo arms and control horns.

Now temporarily attach push rods to servo arms and control horns place them in their position and mark their position.

Temporarily prop up the vertical fin in position and mark the location of the control horn position on rudder.
Fix control horns in their position taking care that holes in control horns are in-line with the hinge lines of the elevator and rudder.

Now remove the servos and push rods and install the vertical fin in position using a set square to make sure that fin is square to the stabilizer and glue fin to fuselage with CA.

Assembling the tail end of the plane is complete.

Now let us build the wing.The location of the carbon wing spar is marked on the wing bottom. But instead of gluing the spar to the bottom of the wing ,I choose to insert the carbon rod into the corresponding flute and pushed it into position using a push rod. I also applied Fiber tape from tip to tip of the central wing section over the spar on the wing bottom.
Mark the position of polyhedral braces on the wing central section and outer wing panel. Clean the braces with petrol and insert them into the flutes marked before and fix with CA.Join the central wing section and outer wing section and fix the joint with CA. Also strengthen the joint with Fiber Tape.Repeat the same with the other outer section. Wing construction is complete.

Slide the wing onto the fuselage and install the motor mount with the supplied hardware.

Before proceeding to install Radio and Power system I weighed the parts on a digital weighing machine and found the weights as below.

1. Air Frame with Motor Mount.                     - 198 gm
2. Receiver and Servos with pushrods.           -   30 gm
3. Motor and ESC and servo extension wire,
    Prop adapter and Propeller                       -   90 gm
4. Zippy 11.1 V, 1050 mAh,20C Battery.         -   98 gm
                                                  ------------------
                                                   Total    -  416 gm
                                                  ------------------

Now let us complete the construction and see what would be the AUW ready to fly.

Install the receiver and servos on the fuselage boom temporarily with double sided servo tape and connect the push rods to servo arms and control horns as shown in the pix.

The hole in the propeller hub is too small to mount on the adopter. Enlarge this hole to the proper size using a prop reamer or correct size drill bit on a hand drill.
Mount the motor on the motor mount.Attach the propeller to the prop adapter and fix to the motor.
ESC is mounted behind the mount on fuselage using double sided foam tape and secured with zip ties. The battery is mounted behind the ESC using Velcro so that removal or repositioning of the battery would be easy. Then the plane is balanced by moving battery or the wing in fore or aft directions to achieve proper balance. CG is right under the wing spar. Some pix.

The Ready To Fly AUW is 438 gms or approximately 15.5 Oz.
All that required now is setting up the control throws and head for the flying field. I have to ask Sai what are the suggested initial throws Tomorrow as it is 2:45 AM now.

BTW, the wing looks a bit too far backwards on the frame from the motor/prop, is that the recommended place (or placement based on CG) ?

WOW she looks just like the TECH FEST glider in every way  especially the Wing position. 
In the case of the MOSS which is basically a scratch built the Wing position can very depending on the set up and weight of the components hence the best way I have seen is to slide the wing around a bit to acheive CG Point as Mr Rao has done .
As for Throws Raoji  , less sensitivity improves the Glide so go by your instinct.
