have been trying to charge a couple of batteries but nothing really works for above 1 amp charge rate, why so?

You will have to get a better power supply that is capable of supplying more current at the 12v. This topic has been discussed a number of times on the forum alongwith workable and efficient solutions, if you search for "INPUT VOL ERROR" in the search box.

you're absolutely right, the ampere out was around 1amp, and the charge rate anything less that was working fine for me, any clue on which hobby store has a 12v adapter with an ampere out of atleast 5amps?
You can use a wide variety of adapter as long as the output current is as required; laptop adapters serve as good alternatives.
