Joining RC

My name is Vishwas Murhekar (37) and I live in Anushakti nagar, Mumbai.  I have listed my RC skills as beginner because there is no option for RC level below beginner. Even a beginner is a giant for me. I have no experience in flying except paper planes and kites.

I have joined this group to begin. Before putting any general and specific question, I am going through various forum threads which I find interesting.

Will it be helpful to have a RC plane like MOSS to have a feel of RC?? If yes I will purchase one.

I would like to see planes in action where can I look forward to?? Any events during the weekends in Mumbai??? Do we have members near Chembur????

Hi Vishwas -

Welcome to RC India :)

You are doing the right thing by trying to read up on the highlighted threads (especially the ones in the Gems list).  If you have done so, it would be clear to you now that the common/recommended path to RC is to start with a simulator, then move on to an electric high-wing/glider. So MOSS or similar planes would be a pretty good way to get your feet wet in this hobby.

I will let the Mumbai folks respond to your question about local RC action. I have seen Mahalaxmi race course being recommended else where.  Our members Sushil and Sandeep are great resources in Mumbai, and here are some relevant threads.

Hello Vishwas, welcome to RC India. Two folks who would help you a lot would be a) Anwar and b) Sai aka rcforallin.

Well, I for one am missing the constant chatter from Pickle6/Subbu. I am sure the newbies from Mumbai and others in general would have loved his inputs.

We fly weekends and holidays at the Mahalkshmi Race Course.

Feel free to call me: 98202 84641 and come to the field for a "close up" of the action!

This Saturday, I will possibly be at Amby Valley but should be there on Sunday.

Do I need some kind of entry permit/pass?? If yes, please tell me 'how to' and 'where to' of the same.

No. Enter the race course area. You will see the "Amateur Riders Club" entrance as you cross the track. Take the road immediately to the right of this and you will be on the field where we fly.

Flying, at Mahalaksmi,  has been stopped by a directive from the Police pending the duration of Kasab's trial citing "airborne terrorist threat" as the reason!!

Will be at Airoli, however. Let me know if you would like to come. Will give you directions on how to get there.

The Google map does not really give you directions on how to get there  from the Expressway. The place would not be easily located from just the map.

We had been to Airoli today to have feel of RCs. All the planes barring one was petrol one(or methanol or may be some other fuel). It was a fantastic experience(Thanx to Sushil) to watch veterans taking off and landing. All were experienced fliers  :salute:  :salute:. BEcause everybody was busy flying, there was hardly any chance to interact with them although Sushil and Mr. Praveen were kind enough to give some guidance on how to begin with.

I have a few questions. These may be been discussed;In that case please direct me to the thread.

1. People might use different Tx and respective Rx. How come their frequencies never match?? I mean is it possible that one Tx interferring another Rx??

2. All planes were Quite expensive and one never uses ferrarri to learn driving. To begin with which plane should I purchase?? Some experienced fliers were of the opinion that MR MOSS is not suitable for flying in the windy situations prevailing there. But I saw one delta wing rear motor thermocole plane doing acrobatics.

3. How an airfoil is designed? How to know how much wing span is required for a plane? How to  arrive at correct size and shape of stabilizer and rudar?? One may say, follow some available design. That is correct to begin with. But if one wants his own plane ,one needs to know more.

1.  There are two main categories of radio systems, FM and 2.4Ghz.  With FM, each flyer uses transmitters and receivers with different crystals in them (the frequency of the crystals have a spacing of 10Khz or more), there by ensuring that there are no conflicts.  Remember that this is done manually by the flyers, so if two people do pick the same frequencies, there will be conflicts.  People consult each other before turning on their radio to avoid this.

For 2.4Ghz, the transmitter picks free channels automatically, so many can co-exist. Some other designs jump around many channels while transmitting at high rates (like 100 times a second).

2.  For a beginner, you want a high wing model, because of their self correcting abilities.  Unless the winds are really high, many SPAD/foam planes will do OK.  If you have local help, a 40 size high wing glow model would be a great choice.

3.  If you pick the right plan, you just need to follow the specifications exactly, including the resulting weight of the model.

In addition to what Anwar said, I would like to add my two bits...

In a sense I am close to your level of RC skill and this is what I have been trying

1) Get hold of a 6 channel radio as per your budget (personal preference 2.4GHz)
2) Get hold of the cheapest high wing trainer you can find with only throttle, elevator and rudder controls (factor the initial crashes so keep the cost down)
3) The model chosen should have a low take off and landing speed. So practice at low speeds
4) Initial models to have low weight.

When one begins to learn, try to fly in a practically no-wind situation to get hold of the basic concepts of flying.

Personally, I have been trying to go the scratch build route and am learning to fly properly without crashing.

This plane is designed for high speeds and aerobatics. It's sheer power compared to its weight and commensurate speed, is what enables it to "penetrate" the wind.

A  "beginner" type of  lightweight, powered glider may well have problems under these conditions.

I am all for starting with a nitro, 40 size, trainer model with a decent 6 channel radio set up.

Sushil,
In my opinion, the choice that a newbie has depends on the kind of mentoring/support that is available on ground. In case there are experienced flyers who are willing to mentor/help, then the setup you suggest is a viable option. However, if one has to learn on his/her own without guidance (as in my case), then starting off on an expensive model may not work. In that kind of setup, a small electric setup may be a better option.

Although senior members will be always forthcoming to provide help and guidance, my budget is 10K(including Tx). So that excludes the nitros.

What I am planning is to graduate slowly starting with small planes. We have 100m x 100m playground in front of our building (which may not be sufficient even for a MOSS; Please comment). We have other bigger grounds but any moderate to big size plane flying around BARC is asking for trouble.

I am thinking of going for a mini/micro RC as of now(not even a moss) so that we can fly the plane in our colony also. Even if it takes a little longer, I would like to scratchbuild one. I will soon put an order for 6C Tx.

I have a suggestion for the moderators. During reading various threads, a newbie comes across many abbreviation which makes a post incomprehensible to him. It will be a good idea to start a thread/upload a file containing abbrevations.
