hi, welcome to the Hobby.
Plane building is so easy, only the thing is you should know where to go and what to do.
First of all DONT GO FOR A PLASTIC CONSTRUCTION, its not gonna be your trainer, it will be your night mare. GO FOR FOAM EPS (Thermacol) CONSTRUCTION with Bamboo and Packing tape reinforcement. Hope these instructions help-
1. I suggest this Cessna 185 (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1190685) - You need to do it with EPS (thermacol) which will be supported with thin sticks of bamboo and reinforced (covered) with packing tape. Download the plans for Tiled A4 provided in the page. All you need to do is use them to cut parts out of foam sheet.
2. Better go for a small LiPo - Like 650 mAh 2S 3. What ever the plane you are going to construct should satisfy these things to be a good trainer - should float in the air at 'zero' throttle in put - should glide when you hand launch with all the equipment onboard - Must have as less wing loading as possible (wing loading = Total all up weight (AUW)/ total wing area ) - Better if it has dihedral on wing and controlled with elevator and rudder (so becomes 3 channel control)
I think you need to scale up or down the Cessna dimensions according to your on board equipment weight.
Hope this info is enough to get you started Feel free to ask me any info on anything you feel needed.

Wing loading = AUW/wing area :)

DO NOT use regular (soft) thermacol. use biopac !
Motor mounts are available at local hobby shops, or build one out of 3mm plywood held by a stick.
