Okay, hey guys, I'm new to this forum. I've been trying to build my own RC plane from scratch for 3 years now. Starting off with balsa wood, the first one never took off(my own design). The next two were powered by a Cox 0.049 Black Widow which turned out too be very heavy. (700 g with a 6x3 prop). Now, because I couldn't control the engine's thrust, I decided to go electric for my next RC plane(If you can suggest me how to, it would be appreciated).

The fourth plane I built was a month back, after a 2 year gap. I tried to be a little less adventurous and took out the pdf plans from the internet. This one is called Sport Trainer from Mikey's RC. From the videos that I've seen, it looks like a stable design. Now I started off with a 5 mm depron sheet and maybe acted very foolish by not coming up to this forum before to check out everything related.

So I used hot glue(cement as its called here) to stick depron pieces together. I used 8 inch barbecue sticks to give the fuselage strength. Same was used for giving the wing aerfoil and to hold the ends up to give a 2-3 degree dihedral.

So I went for a test with a couple of friends in my high school ground. Now here comes the concerned part, I kept throttle to 100 percent before my friend chucking it(Maybe because I was in a doubt whether the thrust was enough even after keep 100%). He took 7-8 quick steps before chucking it. The plane quickly gained speed and shot up with a 70 degree angle and then almost 90. It turned right without being turned by me. The plane was launched into the wind direction, So I'm guessing the wind made it turn. During it's 6-7 second flight, It was hardly ever in control. It went to do a vertical loop all by itself twice before the wing just bent mid air making a V shape. It crashed hard on its nose destroying the front part and the outrunner.

I'm guessing this was because the depron was too weak, or the joints were not glued properly. Also, maybe the throttle was never reduced could be a problem. Any which way, I've made another Sport Trainer using coroplast. This time, I've used fevicol and cement glue. I've also screwed a thin aluminium L bracket to keep the wing in tact if the glue fails. I'm flying it tomorrow and don't think I can take another crash.

Please help me with your suggestions and flying tips. Also, could anyone please point out any mistakes that may have lead to the crash. Your comments and criticisms are welcomed. I've attached photos of the plane that crashed. Please have a look at them. I'll be uploading some more pictures of the new one made with coroplast later today. Thank you in advance :salute:

It is not an issue of strenght or anything else.(put a cf spar through the wing)PLS PUT THE MOTOR's THRUST ANGLE AT AROUND 4 DEGREES DOWN.I guanrantee it will fly well :) 8-)

Because the plane went up so crazily, the guy who was handling the camera lost the plane from the screen, but I'm posting from whatever we can see. The plane's wing can be clearly seen bent. I want to know what could have caused this. Obviously the barbecue sticks didn't hold properly. What glue should I have had used? Did the wing take too much of stress? Should have reduced the throttle?

RCSCRATCHBUILDER

Never launch at 100% throttle go 70-80.as i said put a cf spar and use hot glue

I tried to fly the new one today. Google said wind was around 23 Km/h so refrained from flying. Will be going early morning next Sunday. I believe the wind was approximately the same (23) when I first tried to fly the trainer. And I now understand that it is not advisable to fly above 8. So I guess that's another mistake. And I'm learning it the hard way.

You say 70-80 percent should be enough. I don't know. I'm slightly nervous to chuck it. I just don't feel if the thrust is enough even after having all those specs! But I guess I'll just take the chance.

what is your model AUW ?

1. For a beginner one needs to have a self correcting plane = dihedral in the wing and if possible do away with ailerons control.
2. balance the model well and chuck it to see if it glides.
3. use a prop saver on the motor it will help reduce damage.
4. landing gear is good.
5. limit you control throws, will help you better control the model.
6. practice a lot on sim if you are planning to fly alone but while flying have a person with you to help.
7. fly on a clam day, it will help you understand the model characteristic better in flight.

Remember don't re-enforce the model to much ! as long as it is able to maintain shape and take the power it should be fine.

Sorry for the late reply. Was busy with my term work. The plane's AUW is 550 gm. Will that be okay?

sahilkit

550 gram auw is on a lighter side for the motor/esc/ battery combo you are using but wing area has to be large like 40inch plus with 9 inch chord.

This weekend I'm facing a new problem. I have a 2.4 Ghz 3 Channel Graupner radio. And it refuses to bind now. I've been using it for the past 3 years. I start it with normal procedures but the ESC goes into programming mode all the time and doesn't respond to the transmitter  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

fixed the problem in the Rx. Attempted flight yesterday and....... success.. FINALLY !!!
When the plane was released it flew wonderfully for some seconds without me doing anything. Afterwards it was acting erratic sometimes, credits to my 0 flying experience maybe. Also, it wasn't very responsive while turning specially when turning left. Can anyone tell me how far should the ailerons and elevator go up/down?
took two flights and handled the best when I cut power for landing :P

How much can the c2822 1400 kv motor produce thrust with 10774888422 prop and 100 mah 11.1v 30c lipo

rcrcnitesh

the motor will burn and the battery, don't know what to say will happen to it.

U should have used a 8*5 prop for your Cox Engine as 700gms can be lifted with that Engine

Pradyumna Hatwar

What size prop are you using for your new plane ... the latest one ..... if your plane weighs more than 475 gms .... i suggest you using a 9*4.5 prop .....and moreover Coro is not a good alternative for depron or biofoam ... you should have used Depron for this one two .....
Also consider Zipteing your wings in a criss-cross manner to strengthen them ...
Wish you luck for your Flight .!!  :salute: :)

bhoditha

Sorry for the mistake it is 10*7 prop along with 100 mah 3 s 11.1v battery c2822 1400 kv how much will it produce thrust along with 30 amp esc or suggest me other prop along with its thrust which will be able to suit 30 amp esc

rcrcnitesh

The battery will burst.
