Title: RC Hydroplanes
Post by: Sb_Maharana on May 16, 2011, 11:30:28 AM
Hi Srikant,
Completed the FG Van Line today, I want to use two drive system with 400 size brushed motors, instead of one. I think these motors will be fine for a normal speed and short during of sailing.

I am expecting it to be around 3 kg after completion.

Awesome!
Glad you are building a speed boat.
Thats an awesome build. What is the weight of Just the Hull? POst more pictures
What was the mould made off? This would be interesting to make all future models.

I don't have a proper weighing machine, but a round big one used in medicals. Anyways presently it won't cross 2.5 kg max. I made two piece mold with FG. Will update the rest as on progress.

gr8 one Mr Maharana, is it Scratch built or Plan built ? ;)

At present it is a hopeless build, let us see how things come up after fixing the drive system, electronics etc.

On my next build I will remember those points, will make an affidavit, whether it is going to be a scratch / plan / kit build.

hi Sb_Maharana ,
looking at the pictures the boat looks good,
it's a pity you don't feel it is as good as you wanted, these thoughts can be soul destroying .
it would be good to see it on the pond.

Hi Maharana,
This is a good build. This has surely given me the way forward to build more of FG moulded boats. Would be interesting for everybody if you can share your drive and FG mould pics.
Looking forward to this one..( Cant say looking forward to video. since I havent posted one of mine yet)

Thanks.

Sir it came out really good!
I was finding a way to FB and last time i call you for the same,
Would like to know all the details of mold and FG you used in this.

Would really like to see it run soon......

Thanks sir,
Did you do gel coating on it?
And the paint job is really Amazing.
which Motor, ESC & Lipo's are you using....

Thanks Ashish & Akash,
Preparing a good surface is important before each paint job, smooth & shiny surface will produce a quality paint job on a dry weather. I did the colour separation with tapes and the blue border is plane sticker (Royal blue). Getting the right Font & logo (ps format) took some time. I will cut down the names & logo at local auto-sticker shop. Purchased some motors & escs & not yet planned for the drive system.

I live in a small town with limited resource. I could not use gel coat, hopefully next time I can do with gel coat.

Hi Sb_Maharana,

Your Speed boat built has come out exceptionally well. The mould quality and finish has come out excellent. The painted finished product with decals will look straight from towers.  {:)}  {:)}  {:)}

Please share with us your technique on fiberglass mold and casting, Raw materials required for casting and their sources.

Sundaramvelar Sir,
I already mentioned the requirements of raw material for FG:
http://www.rcindia.org/tools-materials-and-building-techniques/fiber-glass-cloth/msg58142/#msg58142
One correction there, Cost for one liter resin Rs. 130/-.
I don't have much intermediate photos except this one.

Hi Sreekant,
No progress since last 15 days, got some time today to complete the tail wing section. It will take another week or so to complete it in all respect. Got a 500 Watt motor & esc. Yet to purchase LiPo, Propeller etc.

The boat is almost ready, off water test was fine, but motor & esc don't look too convincing for a fast drive.
Uploading some of the photographs.

hi mate.
that joint angle on the bottom end of prop shaft seems a little sharp?
not vibrations?
a good place for 'flexi shaft'.
regards
don
Title: Re: RC Hydroplanes
Post by: Rooster on June 24, 2011, 09:41:39 AM
Is it a  universal joint that you are using at the strut shaft and prop shaft joint.
You seem to have made complete use of your new Lathe.
Title: Re: RC Hydroplanes
Post by: Sb_Maharana on June 24, 2011, 03:44:51 PM
@ Sunk?
You are right sir, Flexible shaft is the correct option, but couldn't get right kind of flexi shaft, so made this one with U joint. The stuffing tube is extended upto the U-joint & the inner end fixed in a clamp. There is lot of vibration in off water mode, on water it will be somewhat silent.

@Srikant,
Now it has became a desktop lathe, with a lot of other related tools & accessories like Taps, Dies, cuttings tools, drill bit etc.

hi mate.
another problem solved then  :)

perhaps if you could alter the angle of the prop you may find a smaller angel with less vibs but still good drive responce.
the trouble with vibrations is that they do damage.

oh the beauty of self build etc :) :) :)

Post by: Sb_Maharana on June 26, 2011, 07:47:15 PM
Don Sir,
I can't reduce the angle of propeller or fix the propeller at the end of stuffing tube because the overall thrust will be wasted lifting the boat instead of pushing (which inturn may cause the bow dipping problems).  Today I tested the boat, there was no vibration, but still have to make some modification with drive system.

(a) As I am using a motor of 1200 KV, I though a propeller about 6 cm. dia will be fine, later looking at the vibration (off water) I reduced the size to 4 cm. Presently it is drawing less than 20 Amps where the motor is capable of 40 Amps & esc 60 Amps. So I have to increase size of prop. to 6 cm dia.

(b) the 2nd mistake was – I fixed all the drive system with out checking the water line mark, I miscalculated the water line depth, so upper end of the stuffing tube is falling just at the W/L mark, on high speed small amount of water is leaking.

Previously I was thinking this motor & esc may not be sufficient for this boat, but it is quite fine.

hi Sb_Maharana
just because the motor does not draw max amps it does not mean you have to put a bigger prop on............ the esc will take more amps but if the boat is performing well then I would leave the smaller prop and enjoy more water time per battery :)
I understand the lift/push principle of angle of prop,I was just asking if you were able to alter the prop to shaft angle to minimize vibes......but it seems all is well in the water and under load.  :)
enjoy

don

hi Sb_Maharana
Well.............. that is one superb boat.
that must be 'at least' equal to or perhaps better than an expensive store bought boat.
well done .very worth the effort put into this build. :)

as for the power system, it looks as though  you are right and a bigger prop would give the speed to match the looks of this superb craft.
you may need to bring the battery forward to stop 'skipping' at speed ???

Don Sir,
There was skipping at higher speed, I thought to place the battery at the bow end but servo & esc wires are not long enough to do so. Today I emptied the hull completely to rearrange & fix everything correctly:
(1)   I am replacing previous stuffing tube with a new one of 1 ½" longer and positioning it at a lesser angle.
(2)   Pointed / tapered both ends of stuffing tube so that driving shafts fits correctly, will grease it well to prevent water leakage.
(3)   The major problem was the handmade propeller which was creating lot of turbulence. I mean the pitch efficiency. I am planning a get good readymade propeller.

hi mate.
it does not take much to make a 'light' boat skip at speed try battery around the back half of the outboard stabilizers [ middleish]
