hey, it could be difficult but you shouldn't say impossible. moreover the pleasure to see your own hand made car run, will definitely be more than RTR models. since you are a student there shouldn't be a problem of friends helping out...

You'll have to rethink that bit.
I know a bunch of guys who put together an IC engine powered car with scrap metal, hack saws and epoxy glues in a couple of days. It didn't look really pretty, but it goes to show that RC contraptions don't always need to have CNC machined performance parts or space-age carbon fiber bits.
Work it out one-by-one and you'll understand how easy it is by experience.
Take a look at some cars for how the suspension, transmission ans steering mechanism works, grasp the general idea and get yourself some reference pics of the simplest RC car of whatever class you're looking to build and start rendering the CAD, use the designs to fabricate the parts or get it fabricated at some machine shop or CNC service.
You don't have to design and fab every single part, just some important parts that you can at the prototyping level, like the A-arms, shock towers, base plate, engine mounts, steering mounts, axil etc. The rest of the stuff like shock dampers, gears, steering knuckles, differentials, etc can be purchased.
Be sure to not complicate the build beyond which you lose interest in the project. And keep away from trying to replicate those "cool-looking cars".
Also, you should know this, if you break some custom parts in your DIY car, you'll have to fabricate it. You can't expect to buy it off-the-shelf. So keep some spares of parts that are likely to fail in a crash.
