Title: My first Truggy - XXT
Post by: rajathv8 on May 16, 2011, 11:23:54 PM
Hey guys,

Its been a long time since i wanted a RC Truck - from an evader st to phoenix st2 now this.
http://www.rcindia.org/beginners-zone/novice-rc-cars-query/

Was hard to convince parents back then. But now after many many attempts - i have my RC. Sparrowhawk XXT!! :)

I collected the truck on 15th - it came here with a friend i made recently.
Gave the truck a thorough cleaning and inspection.

Things that need to be done:
1. Should get an Antenna tube.
2. One screw is missing from the motor mount (3x4 BT machined screw)
3. Change connectors - the tamiya ones have become loose.
4. Need to get lipos :D
5. Need to do semething about the opening on the chassis for motor and spur - so that dirt doesnt get in.
6. Need to get some body clips.

I was informed about these before the purchase - deaing with the seller was pleasant.

I wont be running the truck till i fix the motor - it runs now but dont want to risk it as the spur gear may strip cos of a bad mesh. Got a Nimh 2400mah psck with it but no charger.

Thanks to everyone here for all the advice :) specially Divyam and Gandhar.

Here are the pics :)

No problem man! Great truck :D
1st thing that should go (Actually HAS to go) Are the Tamiya connectors..
They really can't deliver the power needed for BL systems :)
You want my NiMH charger? I don't use it anymore anyways :)

Looking forward to racing you at the track! :D

The track is in Jaynagar (or J.P. Nagar? Confuses me all the time). Its REALLY close to Brigade Millennium..  :)

I think someone said it was in JP Nagar. But you guys had better ask someone who knows. :D

Thanks Gandhar :)
Yup i pulled it apart for a cleaning and put it back together. couldnt resist :D
I have read the manual and assembly manual also.

I checked on Rotor - they ddint have the antenna tube or the motor screw :( I really hope ModelArt has them else il have to resort to DIY. Looking for alternatives for the antenna tube already - any ideas? Also do you guys think i can get the screw in a normal hardware shop? Worth a try i guess.

Since im getting the charger from Divyam il keep the connector for a while - will change when i get lipos.
Now need to measure the battery bay and get select a lipo.

As for the connector i was planning for 4mm bullets because 5mm bullets do not have the plastic casing and there are chances for wrong polarity ( i am dangerous :D )

The track is in JP nagar 7.5th phase (some say 8th some say 7th phase :D)

1. ESC - max 60A
Things can get crowded and care should be taken to ensure no wire touches the ESC else it can melt the wire insulation.

2. Motor - max 40A
   IBL 36/33 = Inrunner Brushless 36mm dia 3300Kv
The motor has a rubber cover behind it for dust protection.

    Motors available - 3300Kv, 3900Kv , 4200kv and 6100Kv

3. The motor screw i need is the one marked 3.

damn you're good. :)

Try to check for an antenna tube from anyone else.I'm not sure whether there are standard sizes but you can try.

On the hardware,I don't know.

I have an extra antenna tube too, if you want it! And I also have a spare 2400 MaH 7.2v NiMH Ace RC battery with Tamiya connector.. Come to the track and I'll give you all of it :)

Another reason why i bought this - dimensions showed that this would fit in my backpak. This is important for me as i have a bike. Turns out that it is a tight fit - too tight :D. All i need is a slightly bigger bag and im set for the track. Well once i learn to drive that is :D

Get a good set of tyres. These tyres have hopeless grip unlesss the surface is hard packed or tarmac.

Dont go to hobby shop for screws. Just pull out the other ones and take it to a nice hardaware shop that sells fastners. Blue threadlock it when you get them.

Chuck the Tamiya plugs, they become loose, go for deans/traxxas.

Did that :) Thanks for the tip.

These tyres seem quite soft. Will they withstand tarmac?

Divyam thanks for the antenna tube, battery and charger. It fits just fine :)

Searched the whole house for screws today morning. Found 2 cerelac tins full of screws. Searched the entire lot. Found ONE screw with fine threading similar in diameter to the one i needed but was 2cm in length. Then used a hacksaw blade and cut it to 4mm length with great difficulty. It  fit but the head was too big so then filed that down.  And finally it worked!!!! The motor is secure and tight now :) :)

Took it for a test on the road - slowly first then generous on throttle. Hit my neighbours car then drove into a ditch ( quite hard ), after 15 mins on the road (slow :D ) i realized that one shock was leaking. By now the battery was dead. So got it home. Found quite a large stone sitting happily next to the motor - scary! So fixed the shock - i didnt have shock oil so i used coconut oil :D :D . Its kinda fine but not as good as shock oil - will get it soon. Covered the hole on the chassis - completely for the spur and partially for the motor, hoping that the air flow will help in cooling.

Motor and ESC was quite warm but cant call it hot.

Had many people looking from the main road. And neighbour kids as spectators. Haha :D

Pics:

1. DIY motor screw. The actual one is a hex. It is available in a pack of 20 for $7 on tower hobbies.
2. Remaining part of the modified screw :D
3. Cover made form shirt price tag. Made sure that none of the screws are covered.

PS: The shock mod worked! Found a spring cup dangling on the shock.

Dorve it again. Love this thing :D

They have cleaned the rain water drain here and dumped the mud on the road. There are hardly any houses on this side of the road so the sutff from the drain is just silt and not the mucky usual stuff. Had an awesome time running it on road and dirt (divyam you were right. Kicking up dirt was all i was doing :D).

Coconut oil is still in the shock :D

The tyres seemed ok on dirt. Maybe i didnt notice cos im a newbie.

PS: Gandhar thanks a ton for stopping me from getting a brushed car! :)

Is coconut oil thick enough? I mean, wouldn't it leak? Somebody said that clutch fluid is ok for these shocks. I've never tried it, but its definitely cheaper than Shock oil and easily available.

I am not sure if Coconut oil will be able to give the viscocity Silicon oils can. It will wear the shafts and offer no damping, change to silicon shock oil. Available at JRH hobby/Modelart

From nowhere except own experience, lost the front shock cups on the first run/bash/horseplay itself. I solved it using washers and still looking for the spare cups.

Haha true Divyam. :)

Sure Sheshank. If not this sunday definately after my exams :)

Tassem the coconut oil ok for now as i am not bashing too much. No it does not leak. And you mean RC car clutch fluid or real car fluid?? :D

Ajo its not as good as silicon but this is what i has so gave it a shot. Its not too bad either gives about 60% damping as the other shocks. Will change to shock oil as soon as  get it.

There is a shop near my place that sells automobile lube oil. He has many varities - i used few on my bike. They are of different viscosity. Will give them a try.

Need to get:
1. Shock oil.
2. Tread lock (dont know where from)
3. Body clips

ANTA ji you have saved me a shock cup today. Do you have any other tips? Please share :)

@Divyam ,Gandhar and ANTA: You guys have another one. Mr.Satish whom i bougght the truck from has just purchased a 4x4 slash :D

Hey is it not possible to get Silicon Oil from other local sources? I've seen quite a few specialist stores dealing in different types of oils for automotive/machine use. I'm not talking about just branded and sealed containers but also those Barrels. Would they have stock of Silicon Oil?

If somebody could explain the more commonplace (in india) uses of silicon oil, we can get it cheap from such sources..

Rajath: I meant the clutch oil in 1:1 cars :) Thread lock is available at RCdhamaka IIRC..

i have a suggestion for the video taping. in case u are using a phone. the stock ace rc transmitter has a nice flat back and u can zip tag the phone there. wont get great quality but it might do the job.  :) till u get urself a cameraman.

and as for the threadlock u can get it in any hardware store.

Thanks Ajith. Thats a good idea. Will give it a shot :)

Hey Gandhar, you have 1500 posts :)
Yup did a lot today. Very convenient to test mods immediately as hardly any vehicles pass by on my cross-road and neighbours are good - well doesnt matter cos its electric. :D

Want to try it on track but thats going to take time :(

First priority is the thread lock.
Also i need to adjust the front right tyre - it has a toe out.  dont have the turnbuckle wrench though. Does it come with the stock XXT?
Need to adjust the camber on all tyres.
I run it on loose mud so the tyre gets covered with dust - then i run it on concrete in a straight line. Easy to find out which part of the tyre touches the ground predominantly as this part becomes clean - dust gets removed due to contact with concrete.

I got only one the tools iv posted in the pics. I should get one for myself. Dont want to wear the tyres out too much.

Should any of the parts be lubed?? Not sure cos if i oil any part it will accumulate a lot of dust so didnt do anything.
Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT
Post by: ajit4647 on May 18, 2011, 11:20:39 PM
thats something unavoidable. even if u oil the parts just make sure that its just a light layer. and the only way is to clean it up after use.

and oh as for the tires. the stock tires on my phoenix and the meant for off road tires on my maxx are not faring that well on road.

the maxx tires are getting small cuts while the phoenix tires are pretty much bald. and most of my phoenix use was on road. very little off road.

Hmmm.... thanks for that. Will restrict on road use from now. Have an idea as to what that looks like - Divyans bald phoenix tyres. :D

What parts do i oil?
Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT

Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT

Gandhar your truck is new. I dont thing you need to lube it. I used a little oil and it was a mess to clean! Dont think il use any oil. All the moving parts have sealed ball bearings so it doesnt need any lube.

I use thick oil on the spur and every bit of oil was out in a sec because of high RPM - no use there.

How long should i charge a 2400mah Nimh battery. I searced a lot but am still uncertain. Since it is 2400mah and charger output is 350mah i recon 2400/350 ~= 7 hours.

But on this site : http://convert-to.com/491/recharging-rechargeable-nimh-nicd-batteries.html
It says more than 8 hours.

These are 'c' cells right?

Even bearings need to be lubed.More often than we would think. ;) Get some bearing oil and do it.

You should avoid using any sort of oil on the spur or pinion. If you have to lube them, use some lithium grease. There was some sort of grease on my slash's spur when it came from the factory.

For the NiMH battery, after 7 hours(from a discharged state(you can tell its discharged enough when it just doesn't have anymore power)),just touch the battery. It should get warm(NOT hot).Fully charged,my battery reaches around 10.02V.

Try a hardware store. But WD-40 leaves a residue. And don't use it on bearings. Its also more of a water dispersal agent rather than a lubricating agent.Get some dedicated lubricant and WD-40.

I need to get myself some as well.If I find a place,I can get some for you.

WD40 is available at pretty much every store in SP Road. There is also a store there which sells every kind of power connector available. You will also get cables and shrink wraps. I'm saying this since I read earlier that you're planning to upgrade your connectors. Make a list of all the stuff you will need and give them a visit. If you go to the end of the road you will find some stores that deal in grease and lubes as well. Or you can walk over to JC Road for that.

About the shock oil : I tried few oils today -

They've got all connectors you can imagine and some you've never seen before! lol.. Its a small shop run by a lady. At least it was a lady when I went there a month or two ago.

What oils are these? I mean what is their intended purpose?

Huh.. Me too! Same dilemma!

Haha.I'm seriously considering picking up a Hk-450 heli  ???. Its about 12k, approx how much i'll have to shell out on a used electric and the heli is 3D capable :)

These are lube oils for auto-ricks.

I paid Rs.5 for about 50ml. I needed an alternative because i know TT shocks are not great.

Will try few more samples  tomorow. Didnt get time today.

Took it out for a spin at 10.30pm. Had an awesome time! :D

Mom actually suggested putting lights on it and dad stayed out till i got back myself - bet they dont think its a toy anymore :)

Its  too tempting to drive on road. Didnt accelerate suddenly or turn too fast to save the tyres.

Nope tyres have about 50-60% tread but i FEEL it has reduced after running it twice yday.

Get an electric and even you can have fun anytime - hope that neighbour does not have an issue with it!

Good i didnt go to the track.

Went to the ground today - was empty as expected.
In 2 mins of running i realized that the motor screw was out - the one i made up!!!!
Searched around and found it wedged between the A-arm and the body!!!!! What luck!!

No more running till i get thread lock! None of the hardware stores near house has it :(

Gave it a good cleanup - squeeky clean now :D :D

Using lube on the spur was a big mistake. It started to accumulate small tiny stones. Would have been a disaster for the spur - and since i sealed the spurr opening on the chassis the stones couldnt get out!

The opening for the spur is a good thing - keeps the dirt out and stops it from accumulating near the spur. Will have to thing of some other way to keep the dirt out.

EDIT: Pics added.

Go for the batteries. i am currently using 2 of them in my Maxx and they are very good. the casing is good too.

But a small piece of advice. decide what type of connector u wanna use. i soldered Traxxas connectors on mine and it was not an easy job.

But the batteries are completely worth it.

Hey thanks for the response.

@Gandhar, Divyam - getting 5A 30C with future in mind :D

@shashank: coustoms wont do anything for small parcels via registered air-mail. The will check ALL EMS and rather large air-mail parcels. I have ordered 500gm packages from HK without trouble so the battery in a small package wont be trouble.

wtr connectors RcHobbyAddict has those connectors. Will need both tamiya and 5.5mm bullet. But i prefer 4mm bullet as it comes with the casing. Confused.
Was planning to retain the tamiya on ECS, get a tamiya to 5.5mm bullet connctor from RC-HA but tamiya does not show among the options on the website.

@ajit : The +ve terminal has a male 5.5mm bullet or is it the other way around?
Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT
Post by: ajit4647 on May 26, 2011, 01:35:43 AM
first of all i would not suggest tamiya connectors for Lipos. better to just solder something else. either Deans or Traxxas. and as for the connector, i dont remember. just cut them out as soon as i got them. let me see if i have any old pics of them.

Rajath, Please switch to any connectors as soon as possible.. Tamiya connectors are HORRIBLE for high voltage usage..

Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT
Post by: rajathv8 on May 26, 2011, 10:32:33 PM
@Divyam : thanks for that. No tamiya.

@others:I will change the connectors. Im not comfortable with the thought oh having 5.5mm bullets as there is a possibility for wrong polarity connection. Will mostly shift to 4mm bullets with the plastic casing.

@ajit : Is it ok to solder connectors to lipo directly? Wont the soldering heat transfer to the lipo cell and cause problems.
Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT
Post by: mail4ajo on May 26, 2011, 11:55:38 PM
No need for you to use 5.5mm, literally a waste for your use. Use deans or better Traxxas.

Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT
Post by: rajathv8 on June 08, 2011, 02:04:42 PM
UPDATE:

The screw i used earlier failed miserably! :D This was because the dia was slightly more and was'nt fitting well - it shredded the thread inside. Luckily there were 4 holes on the motor for two screws.
So now i have used a different screw - from a car accessories store, the screw used to hold the LCD on the dash. Fits perfectly.
Not able to get blue locktit anythere! :(

Tried all the oils at the shop. Used 140 oil today. The piston does not move at all! its like concrete :D  So the best bet is 90 oil.

Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT

Lipo power is yet to be experienced :D Need to change connectors. Just to clarify -  the lipo came with 1 male and 1 female 5.5mm connector. I dont want to solder directly onto the lipo wire so will make a 5.5mm to deans connector for Lipo. Tamiya to dean connector for Nimh. And change the Tamiya to dean on ESC.

Male for ESC and female for battery.

I want to buy suspension oil - my search for oil has reached a dead end. The oils work well for first few times but then lose their viscosity.
The manual says stock oil is 500wt.
The RDC site has GS oils in 250cps , 300cps , 350cps , 400cps .

So which one will be equivalent to 500wt?

Ok, 250cst is more than enough for a sparrow since i have one and know about it after a lot of experiments.
500 is ok for medium bash and race.
1000 cst is good only for bash hardcore.
My personal recommendation is go for a tornado instead of a GS or blabla...

As far is i know only JRH and RCD stock oils.

For savage i read that stock is 30wt and many prefer changing to 40wt for better damping.
40wt is 500cps
35wt is 450cps
30wt is 350cps

I have rebuilt them many times already with many oils :D
Im wondering if i should use the in these shocks or source aluminium shocks first and then use the oil.
The shocks work fine now - no leak for a while an damping is alright but they are hopeless when it comes to realiability. (has local auto repair shop oil in it)
Traxxas big-bore shocks and losi shocks are used as replacement by many for the xxt. The TRX ulrta shocks on divyams slash looked massive though - wonder how they use it as a replacement for the xxt shocks!
Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT
Post by: iamahuman on July 06, 2011, 08:56:20 PM
ehh.....traxxas big bores aren't true big bores. They just have TiN coated shafts. Our ultra shocks look huge compared to your xxt's shocks?Wait till you see 1/8 buggy big bore shocks. 8-) Our ultra shocks are pretty reliable after upgrading them with TiN coated shafts and Al caps. Not that the stockers are bad but the upgraded ones work quite well.

Modelart had silicon oil. The guys cant differentiate between a shock and differential oil. So ensure you get the right thing. Use only silicon oil for shocks/diffs. Anything else may not work. I dont want to experiment on these things.
Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT
Post by: rajathv8 on July 06, 2011, 10:10:43 PM
Yeah they didnt understand when i said "thats diff oil".
The problem is the shocks leak too much. I want to use the oil with shocks which do not leak. As of now im running pretty slow only on tarmac to avoid damage.
Will not run till i get Lock-tit.

You will have to wait for a while buddy. Broke the front bulkhead even before brushing my teeth :D Was driving up and down the street and it bump steered and rammed into the rear tyre of a parked activa - front bulkhead snapped. :D Love this truck :D Was quite fast when it hit the active and was purely my fault :D But the shock mod worked though. All those bumps and ditches yet no leaking :)

Anyone has a front bulkhead for xxt? :D

Haha i ordered for the replacement from the TT dealer i posted about. He will get it soon. Told me it was Rs.400 for the front set.  It has a mix of Hex and philips. Changing to all hex is a mod i will do in the late future. :)

Yup first kaboom :) Will try using Super glue or epoxy to fix it. Im pretty sure it wont hold but no harm in trying. :)

Few observations:

1. It comes with a grease in the - no oil.
2. Shocks are too exposed. Any frontal impact hits the shock or the ball pivots directly. Not a good thing at all.
3. There is quite a lot of bump steer. Am i doing something wrong or is this common to all cars? Any adjustments to make this better?
4. The RTR does not come with a turnbuckle wrench. I feel it should be included.

From what i know and understand, if your steerng has a lot of movement on neutral w/o servo engaging, its time for a new servo savr.

Will look into that. Thanks Arpit. The ply is irritation. 1mm op ply at the servo saver becomes 3-4mm ply at the tyres  :banghead:

Update:

Changed the bulkhead 2 weekends ago. I have used some lubrication oil in the diff. XXT has a superb drive train - beefy.

No damages to report.

I tried spraying a little wd-40 on the body. Seems shinier. The only way I can think of to reduce the scratches is to sand the body on the outer surface(very lightly). It makes your plastic parts look new too BUT people say that it weakens plastic. So I won't use it on plastics but would mind using a little bit to make the body shinier.

Happy to see that you have no other problems. :)

RTR at forum will cost 15-16k max without batteries. They sell a NIMH 3600 battery + wall charger for 3k which is not value.
But to be honest i feel its better to save up for a better truck. Possibly a jammin or slash. I find it worth because i bought it second for a lot cheaper.

+1

Better to start off with a good car than outgrow a cheaper car fast and have to buy a new one.

Dhaksha: Look out for good used car deals. For 15k, if your REALLY lucky, you could even get a Slash 4x4!

Still, the XXT isn't too bad either. Right, Rajath?  :)

Small rocks getting stuck below the spur gear is an issue. Happence once every two times i take the truck out.

Post by: Divyam on September 10, 2011, 11:26:20 PM
Similar problem on the Slash. Not the spur, but inside the chassis. 1 place that's really annoying is inside the groove for the driveshaft. This way the driveshaft MAY be prone to bending and LOTS of scratches.

Yup. Since the drivetrain is 'sealed', all the stuff that gets in stays there... and eats the drivetrain for dinner. ;D

We do have our solutions...

Update and observations:

1. The mod to the shock cups : using tape has worked quite well. Many ditches and bangs later no leaks to report. The caps however do leak oil - nothing to worry too much about though.

2. The rear wing had been damaged. It gets torn if you crash 20-30 times in reverse :D . Not an issue again because the rear wing in plastic costs just about 300 and is available locally.

3. The parts support keeps me happy. Parts are just a phone call away and they are cheap :)

4. There is a lag in the steering servo. Will not be a problem for bashing but serious racers will have an issue. A serious racer would'nt but this truck in the first place :D

5. It comes with quite a number of ball bearings - two for each wheel hub, 4 in the front diff and 3 on the rear diff, two for the steering column, one on the slipper clutch. 18 in all :) Would be nice if someone could explain why bushings are needed in the diff?

6. As far as i know the ESC does not have a lipo cutoff so it would be better to have an external cutoff.

7. Tyre is not bald yet. Frankly i didnt expect it to last this long.

8. When i adjust steering trim when the tx is bound to the rx the truck starts moving without throttle. This has happened twice (2 out of 20). Seems like the ESC forgets the neutral position.

9. Bump steer has reduced after i fiddled with the toe-in.

TT should have included an LVC with their brushless system. Does the MT4 G3 have an LVC?
Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT

hey rajath,

according to a few reviews i read and the TT site, the ESC included with the XXT has a built-in Lipo cutoff.

will confirm this and get back. and according to the site it can handle upto 3S.

Btw the Bigsquid review says that the sparrowhawk XXT comes with metal shock caps????
Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT

The website doesn't say anything about an LVC.... :-\

http://www.tiger.com.tw/product/8060.html

scroll down to the table.

the input voltage for both NiMH and lipo is clearly given seperately.

i guessed they would not have given that seperately if it did not have an LVC inbuilt. i could be wrong though. TT might not have the common sense that we do :P

http://www.bigsquidrc.com/thunder-tiger-110-sparrowhawk-xxt-review/

and even in the final score section of the bigsquid review they dont mention the need for an LVC. but they used 3s Lipo.

I'm pretty sure its not a 3s capable ESC. I think Arpit said that. Arpit, can you confirm? :)
Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT
Post by: rajathv8 on September 13, 2011, 11:04:37 PM
Ajith i checked online but did not find any info about the LVC. Please let me know if you find out :) Yup it does come with aluminum shock caps but it leaks slightly. May need a top up once in 10 runs or so but its not a major problem :)
On http://www.tiger.com.tw/product/8060.html the "features" are of the motor :D Blooper :D If im wrong the ESC has "dual ball bearings shaft support" :D

I am planning on getting an external lipo cutoff. Any suggestions for this from within the borders?

Waiting for the lipo setup to work safely before heading to the track. :)

Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT
Post by: ajit4647 on September 13, 2011, 11:11:53 PM
haha i just saw the features part. maybe thats wrong. but if u see the top headers in the table in the introduction part they say ESC. and theinput voltage is mentioned as 7.4-11.1v

and in the optional parts list there is a program card, and when u click on the image it has 4 settings

1. auto
2. nicd
3. lipo 7.4v
4. lipo 11.1v

as for the external lipo cutoff, Jayanth has one from LRP which is both a Lipo cutoff and a BEC. i am currently using that on my summit.
Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT
Post by: iamahuman on September 13, 2011, 11:19:55 PM
If Jayanth has any LRP BEC cum LVC's, you can get those. Or else you have this (http://rchobbyaddict.com/product_info.php?cPath=25&products_id=105). I guess it should work. Not sure if you can hear the alarm going off during a race :P
Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT
Post by: ajit4647 on September 13, 2011, 11:34:40 PM
an alarm might not be the best idea. getting caught up in the excitement at the track might make the alarm a bit hard to notice.

btw why dont u try getting hold of a lipo voltage checker. see if u can get ur hands on an old 2s lipo. hook it up to the car. run it around a bit. keep checking the voltage from time to time.

see if it goes below 6 volts overall. that would determine if it has an LVC or not. and since you would keep checking it from time to time. it should not be a problem carefully charging the lipo back from 2.9 or so volts. i did it once, when one of my friends lipos got accidently discharged to 2.8 volts.
Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT
Post by: iamahuman on September 14, 2011, 06:36:07 AM
@Ajit: I really wouldn't suggest discharging a lipo cell below 3.2V. Reviving one is pretty simple but the pack has to be monitored closely on every charge and discharge. At the slightest hint of heat, the pack has to be disposed of.
Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT
Post by: ajit4647 on September 14, 2011, 08:34:32 AM
Yup :-)

I take care with mine.

My friend forgot to switch his lvc on. And his got discharged.

Thats why i suggested getting an old lipo for rajath. Incase he cant determine whether it has a lvc or not, he can test it and dispose of the lipo.

In racing, I don't think a 5000 mah lipo will die out with a 10 minute main. On their first run, my cells came off the track at 3.7V after 10 minutes of crazy driving. This was its first cycle and it wasn't even fully charged :o. I'd love to see how it does on a full charge. Best part, it cost 35$!!!

As u saw in the emaxx post. I picked up a set of turnigy and zippy 2s.

Getting pretty good runtimes and they always are perfectly balanced. Really happy even if they are considered to be on the cheaper side of lipos.

Thanks for all your inputs guys :)

Ajith i have the lipo voltage checker. Its nice and handy but checking voltages regularly is cumbersome. Awesome observation about the programming card! Didnt notice that - il check with the TT dealer about the card - if it is within price range il buy it :)

Gandhar my friend has the lipo beep-beep device but his didn't work well and the beeps were not audible.

Arpit the shock mod i was talking about is the shock cup - it would pop out often with the o-rings and all the oil would leak out. A fellow XXT owner told me this happens due to lateral force on the cups itself and not the internal oil pressure. So i secured the shock cup with tape and no leaks since. You can also use shrink wrap. Hope this helps.

EDIT:
The programing card manual said the LVC can be set for different batteries so that means it does have a LVC built into it.
There must be some way of doing the switch without the programing card. Need to search it out. :)

Shock mod:

The TT shocks are the weakest part of the truck. Shock cups pop off easily due to lateral force on the shock body. The shock cup can be held in place using this simple mod.

pic 1.
Cut strips of tape. Make sure the spring retainer has been inserted onto the shock body. After adding tape the retainer will not slide over the body as the tape increases the shock body diameter.

pic 2 and 3.
Place the strips of tape over the cap as shown. Use two or three strips.

pic 4:
secure the strips on the body using one or two turns of tape.

Note:
1. This mod worked for me. I cannot assure it will work on all terrain as i have not tested it to destruction :D
2. I used insulation tape - its nice and thick.
3. The pics show a sloppy job because i did this in a hurry in response to a PM.
4. I used red tape to make it stand out. Using black tape makes this mod invisible to the distant eye. There are pics of the truck with the mod on this thread and no one noticed it yet  :giggle:

Had a muddy bashing session early morning yday. Ran the car on patches of grass. Didnt realize that the grass was wet as it rained the previous night. The car was completely wet but luckily nothing happened.
Cleaning session later the XXT is squeeky clean and disinfected with detol now :)

The shock mod still holding up well though i noticed that little oil had leaked from the shock cap. Love this truck :)

The long antenna is annoying. The antenna tube comes off when the truck lands on its body. It can be solved by bending the tube hiding it below the body buy a shorter antenna wire and tube would have helped.

Will upload the video later :)

Muddy and wet bashing jammed up one of the wheel bearings. It has rusted. Any ideas to get the rust out? I will experiment before buying a new set :) how do the trx cars handle water? The bearings have to be removed and cleaned after every wet session? Sounds cumbersome.
Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT
Post by: iamahuman on October 18, 2011, 09:43:58 PM
The manual does suggest WD-40ing the bearings before and after running in water. Try to soak it in some WD40 with the seals off. If it doesn't free up, get a new one. If you're satisfied with the amount of rust that has been removed, hit it with some degreaser or brake cleaner fluid and put in a drop or two of 3 in 1 oil. I've got an interesting spray that seems to be working VERY well on my bearings. I'll show it to you when we meet up. My wheel bearings are uber smooth!!

I'd suggest this (http://maps.google.co.in/maps/place?um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=bearings+in+bangalore&fb=1&gl=in&hq=bearings&hnear=0x3bae1670c9b44e6d:0xf8dfc3e8517e4fe0,Bengaluru,+Karnataka&cid=18367202890028716568) place for bearings. I got some for my steering rack from them. Pretty inexpensive too. I had them send it by courier and they arrived the next day...

Best tip for that will be remove the tires and wipe your car with a dry cloth after every 'Wet' run... ;)
BTW i also had the same problem with my sparrowhawk, though never gave much attention to it..But yes WD-40 (frankly any anti-rust lqd) works best.
Regarding Trx, i know that revo has rubber boots to protect the dirt and mud from getting in and spoiling.

Bro,revo has -

Sealed front and rear differentials
Sealed driveshafts
Sealed pivot ball suspension
Rubber-sealed ball bearings
Title: Re: My first Truggy - XXT
Post by: ajit4647 on October 19, 2011, 09:49:24 PM
the diffs and ball bearings are sealed.

as for the shafts and the pivot balls,

they have dust boots on them which pretty much keep dust, dirt and other stuff out and keep them moving smoothly.

the ones on the pivot balls will survive for a long time until a pivot ball pops out and thats when they will rip.

as for the drive shafts, the traxxas ones are slider shafts. the dustboots are stretchable upto a point and stretch everytime the halfshafts slide in and out.

but with the brushless power on the Maxx, mine have been ripped pretty bad. but the ones on the summit are still in good condition.

since the driveshafts are splined and need to slide in and out with minimum resistance, the dust boots are a must.

and rajat - just try wd40 on the bearing. the pivot balls on the emaxx rusted up pretty bad after the salt water dip. but wd-40 and a toothbrush helped a lot. as for water use, i ran the summit in water a lot. the only maintanence on that is blowing all the water out with a air compressor and then spraying wd-40 with a long straw type thingy which comes with the can and let it sit the night, clean it up with a cloth the next day. keeps everything spinning nice and free.

That's bad. Online it said pitstop opens at 10. Maybe il give them a call and check. Truck is in running condition. I used metal shielded bearings.

Metal shielded ones at the hubs? I don't mean to be bitter but they aren't the best at dirt protection. They allow high rotational speeds though. But go ahead and try them out. If you ever replace them again, go with rubber shielded ones at the hubs. They get abused the most.

The metal shields on a bearing are poorer at keeping the dust out compared to rubber seal's because the metal shield does touch the inner race.
The outer bearing on the XXT wheel hub is protected from dust. On one side it has another bearing and the other side is covered by the aluminum hex drives. The inner bearing is rubber sealed :)

Found a good link to read about bearings. Here it is:

Busted a stock wheel bearing yesterday and jammed another one. It was cleaned quite recently but i did not use any oil after cleaning. Is this the reason for the issue or is it something else? I opened up the jammed bearing but did not find too much dust in it.

Both replaced with new bearings.

The king pin on one of the wheel hex is stuck. It has been this way since when i got it. Any ideas on how to get it un-stuck?

It's always good to oil your bearing after cleaning. Get some 3 in 1 oil. If you have some sewing machine oil at home, make sure it's pretty thin. If it is, you can use that as well.

How is the kingpin stuck? Like stuck due to an adhesive or due to some mechanical glitch? Is gentle force helping in any way? A picture would make things easier....

I dont know why it is stuck. I doubt it has adhesive involved. Maybe some dirt or something.

I have attached a pic.

Place the hex at the table edge to that the pin portion overhangs while the other part is based on table top, hammer a thin nail on the pin!
Works for me, dosent require hard strokes, just fine touches will do.

I have found a bottle of "SWING-R" oil :D I will report back after trying it on a bearing.

Finally... :P

Hey, are you free sometime around the 4th or 5th of March? Divyam, Amartya( amarto on the forum) and I are planning to meet at Pitstop around that time. We'd love for you to join us. Maybe we guys can have an informal race... :)

I removed the centre driveshaft to get a feel of how a 2wd truck behaves.
It was crazy!
I applied brakes when it was at full speed. the truck spun out, the stone slab on the gutter served as a ramp and the car went flying into my neighbours gate.
Second time it spun out and almost crashed into neighbours car. I could bring the car to a halt from full speed in a straight line with 4wd easily but with 2wd it was challenging. Even the slightest attempt to turn would make it spin. Steering felt more challenging too.
I like the way the back kicks out in turns. Wheel spins and doughnuts were fun too :)
Ability to get "unstuck" had reduced significantly. Nothing on my street could get the xxt stuck with 4wd.
Driving a 2wd was fun though. It demands more concentration and skill.
For plain bashing I prefer 4wd. I would like to try 2wd on the track after I get a new set of tyres :)

Update:
The ball-bearings with metal shields are working well. They are pretty smooth. Only one weel hub has a rubber-sealed ball bearing as of now. I am not able to get the jammed bearings unstuck. I will not give up yet.
The deans are awesome! No heating issue with the connector. No loose connection problems like the ones i faced with tamiya connector.
Tyres are pretty bald :D These will need replacements soon. They work well on-road though - will most probably be a disaster at the track :D I plan to buy one set of tyres+rims for the track and off-road bashing and use the current tyres+rims on road.
Rear wing needs replacement - lexan one is out of shape.
The lexan boby is thick and strong. No signs of a crack after all the crashing it has been through.
Shocks leak a little from the shock cap but it does not worry me.
The stock radio is behaves wierdly with respect to throttle reverse. I use duracell batteries and they last for about 2-3 months. I remove alternate batteries when i store the radio between weekends.
Everything else is fine. :)

Update:
Metal shielded ball bearings are working well on the hubs.
The car is in pieces for maintenance - and to get a feel of putting a car together.
I wanted to buy a new servo, ESC and Tyres for the XXT. Now my priority is to buy a mini RC to use indoors, so no upgrades will go onto the XXT.

Wow. By the looks of it, you're going all out, eh? I love doing all out maintenance on my car but don't need to do it as of now. :P

Be sure to grease the ring and pinion on the diffs. Will you be oiling your bearings as well? If possible, get some mould release compound ( dry silicone) and spray it on all moving parts. It will leave a dry layer of lubrication that will help your bearings and the smoothness of your suspension. If you're re-building your shocks, get yourself some SF-3 grease (It's the same green grease mechanics use on fork seals on bikes). I haven't got my hands on some but it's supposed to be the same stuff as Associated's ' Green Slime'. Your shocks will be a lot smoother and your O-rings will seal well. If you can't get this, normal lithium grease should work well.

Glad to hear that the metal shielded bearings are working fine on the hubs. I was slightly apprehensive of using my metal shielded bearings at the hubs but having read your experience, my doubts have been laid to rest. :)

TT XXT has a lot if self tapping screws on itself. It's a pain to work with Phillips screws.
I will not be oiling the bearings. Thy seem smooth enough.
I will nit be rebuilding the schcksmthis time around. :)
Where should the grease be applied?

The misery of Phillips screws on an RC...

The grease should be on the input pinion gear and the ring gear on the diffs.

Perhaps i should have been specific. I was referring to the shocks :)

Great. I bet it runs a lot better than last time.

My motor mount is out, attached to my new motor. Just waiting to solder it up to my ESC. I will be soldering the motor wires directly on to the ESC so I'd prefer to have my father supervise me do it. It's been long since we guys met. We need to plan something and meet up once again.

Oh yes it feels a lot smoother. :) And it is a lot cleaner!
But off late I am starting to smile Wider at the sight of a heli. I want to move to something new.
Why do you want to solder it directly to the ESC? :)

I'll reduce one connector, 2 solder joints, 3 total points of possible failure.

It also makes for lesser resistance. :)

Update:
I run the truck once in two weeks now, mostly on tarmac. Last weekend i took to a large empty plot - it was fun until a lady shouted at me in multiple languages about dust being blown into her house :D

The XXT is still going strong. No breakage or leakages to report :)

Great.

It's become quite a popular car abroad.
