Title: Newbie, RC car help needed !
Post by: sudhishkv on May 28, 2011, 06:11:37 PM
Hi all,

I am planning to start racing RC cars after watching my friends. I am planning to get a HPI Savage X 4.6 RTR from Dubai. The price is around 27.5K. Do you guys think that is a good choice and will i be able to get the same truck in Bangalore? Is there any better truck than 4.6 RTR?

Thanks,
skv.

Hi sudhiksh, if you are interested in racing a buggy or a truggy will make sense until you are keen on a MT and you want to race with MT's only. You will be able to buy the same from bangalore. In the same price point you have the

1. Traxxas Revo/t-maxx 3.3
2. TT Mta4

I have suggested only nitro's as i see ur a nitro guy :) TT is available from Modelart in Forum. Savage you have selected is the best for bashing and the 2011 kit comes completely RTR. Will PM you the bangalore HPI dealer's number

Thank you very much for the reply.

I am interested in Nitro only since the engine is easier to maintain than petrol and its less complicated(Thats what i think :) ). And I don't like electric since it doesn't sounds like a racing car. My friend is have Savage 5.9 and its bulky and not that good for racing. Thats the reason i have chosen 4.6 RTR. In Bangalore where are the store located so that i can have a look and if the cost difference is not too much i will buy from here.

You're welcome :) glad to see a nitro guy here  Like i said from what i know the Savage is the best for bashing. Its crashworthiness is unbeatable, it can be modded for racing too. If you're very keen on racing in MT class nothing beats a Traxxas Revo :) its the best MT! You can call Manoj and ask him the exact location, i've PM'ed you his number.

Petrols are far easier to maintain and run compared to nitros.

Wow!, Really???
Can you explain the reason you say that?
Also can you suggest any 1/8 size vehicle for me? Please mention the price also.

I know that HPI Baja is available in Petrol.

Thanks for the reply.

I have no experience with petrols but will say that petrols are easier to tune than nitros. All that I will tell you is what I've read.Petrol engines need to be tuned once and very minor adjustments have to be made. They hold a tune really well and go LONG with one tank. One downside is that they are huge and are too noisy to be run is residential areas.

Do you want to bash exclusively or do you want to race as well?

There are FG models in petrol. Check with JRH posts. You may need to increase your budget to get a petrol though.

Shashank: How would you rate a Revo vs Savage for durability. A score for revo with 10 as score for savage.

I really don't know  :P what I can say is the Revo while being the best MT for racing takes quite a lot of bashing too. I've heard about people taking jumps on their Savage and breaking wheels because of bad landings. It is ONLY because of the user's fault. The Savage is more forgiving if you crash and as a beginner you'll crash a million times ! So for pure racing nothing beats a Revo, what the Savage loses in terms of handling it makes up for in brute strength

Hi Newbie...if you plan to buy a RC car...get urself a Nitro. Gas is only good if you want to buy with higher cc engine in the 1/4 scale model. The only downside of the nitro is this fuel is expensive. Good luck :)

I can't find any MT from HPI. Are they going to release it soon? Should I wait? Otherwise i am planning to go with Savage RTR 4.6. What you guys think.

There are no MT's in petrol i guess. Only Baja's are petrol if i'm not wrong and they belong to buggy and SCT class. 5T is a desert truck. I doubt if you'll find any petrol MT's.

A lot of other brands like RedCat and Exceed RC make monster trucks that are petrol..

But they aren't reliable nor do they have any parts support.

+1 to that. It makes sense to buy from brands which have local support. With RC's you're bound to break parts and its a pain to import everytime you do that

I didn't know you were talking about India only ;D
Either ways, the Baja lineup is becoming more and more affordable.. Atleast since it 1st came out in India..

FG 1/6scale Baja is a 4WD and by far the best handler i have ever driven in petrol powered car. There are times i thought probably i should have just bought one FG baja instead of 3 or four nitro cars. "Nitros are nitros any day despite the occasional tuning issues".. Problem with petrol cars is, you need space to drive them. Starting and tuning them are by far the easiest. Dont worry about spares on any FG car listed with us, if we dont have what you ask, i will rip of a brand new car and make sure u get your part on time.. The most annoying part of the hobby is waiting for spares to arrive.

We tend to feel that HPI Bajas are the best petrols out there since we follow the US market and forums. Check out the EU scene. There are so many unpopular companies out there much better in quality than HPI. What I want to see is HPI's 4WD system. But will it ever come or not is the question?

I spoke to a dealer and they gave names never heard of like, lauterbacher, model cargo, Yankee (FG were based on it), carson etc
