@rdx

Inspired by forum members like yourself, I'm about to start with RC cars. I've ordered a cheap 1/12 rock-crawler/ buggy and it'll hopefully be with me in a week or two.

I'm looking forward to learn about RC cars with it and try the various upgrades. The only problem I'm facing now is  getting low cost shock oil. HobbyKing charges an insane $40 shipping for a $2 bottle. It's available on Indian sites but costs more than  :Rs: 1000 and I'm saving for upgrades right now.

I needed 40wt (500CSt) for the rear shocks and 70wt (900CSt) for the front shocks. Are there any local substitutes available? I've read about people using cooking oils. But, I guess they must result in stiff shocks. Can you suggest any locally available automobile oils that won't eat through the o-rings and leak?

I wouldn't mind buying some old 40wt shock oil from you either!

Looking forward to the SLASH's transformation! :)

@ Zaz02

Check the attached picture. There's $5.2 shipping and import fees to India. I can't spend  :Rs: 1000 on oil for a low cost buggy.

Zaz02

But the value for money is very good.
A 60ml bottle would cost you anywhere between Rs 600 to
Rs 800. But here you are getting 120 ml for about 950.
Its double the quantity.

First thing first....if you are into hobby grade RC...then it will be a costly affair......as the parts are not available readily in INDIA. Having said that...I source my parts and necessary oils from tower hobbies mostly and sometimes friends and family gets it for me when ever they travel abroad.....I don't have spare oil for shocks and diffs...as I will be using what I have for this particular overhaulin. . Also I order the oil along with other parts together to save on the shipping...

Thanks. I'll stick to automobile oil or cooking oil for now. I'll get the good stuff with my next car (most probably a 1/10 monster truck).

I do realize that (having built loads of RC aircraft). However, I'm just starting with cars, and like I mentioned before, I don't want to spend too much on my first cheap buggy. I'd rather save wherever I can for my next truck and it's difficult given my many wallet-burning hobbies.

As I dismantle the slash......lots of rust all over suspension pins need changing. ..all the ball bearings are in bad shape and needs repairing or changing...depending upon the part availability.....taken apart all the parts and soaked the plastic parts in concentrated liquid dish washer and water mix...

Any time sir. Alot of respect to you sir.

@Swapnil do post some pics when you receive your crawler.....and one more suggestion , crawlers usually are set for articulation so any kind of resistance should be avoided. And oil in shocks is for resistance and dampening meant for fast running and turns through bumps and plane surfaces. So personally I don't prefer oil in shocks for a crawler setup. Its your personal choice though... :)

Thanks for your valuable input, sir! I'll be needing more of it when I get my hands on this thing. :)

It's not really a crawler, though. They've advertised it as a crawler + buggy hybrid. I wonder if such distinction even exists or if it's just a 'Chinese' thing.

I've ordered wide 1/10 truck wheels and better electronics to handle the upgrades. I'll also be converting the front shocks mechanism from horizontal to vertical. It will be more of a truggy after I'm done modding it. I'll mostly be using it for off-road bashing.
Again, I've spent the minimum amount possible as I'm saving for my first crush, the HPI Savage Flux!

I'll still need oil in the shocks for on road bashing as it does not have a sway bar and has a high tendency to roll during turns.

Do update us all regarding the same...keep us posted.. :)

I've a mini 4x4 slash, did the same to it.. did the complete overhaul like you have to save my beauty through winter slumber.

Use lots of, lots of, lots ... didn't say that enough, yes... lots of WD40 spray on the rusted, muck and goo covered parts. works like a charm.
In past i've opened the bearing covers n tried to clean them with WD40.
it acts as a lubricant as well, but i still used bearing oil and sometimes even cheaper Sewing Machince oil to keep the running smooth. Saved me some, n some were beyond repair. you can figure that out, if the steel balls inside bearings have chips or too much scratches on them.
used SIMPLE GREEN cleaner & degreaser , works like a charm on plastics as well as metal parts. its conc. form of say domestically used COLIN spray
i've used some lithium grease for delicate parts, n general automobile (RED) grease for rest.
Found various #CST shock oils from LHS. i generally prefer soft at front and bit hard at back, gives my slash better traction. The same goes for my Diff. Setup as well.

40% of the Bearings are worn out due to rust  and beyond the WD40 treatment and cleaning.Have already ordered fast eddy bearing set. Rest of the bearings, I have already cleaned and conditioned and kept for spares just incase. Washed and cleaned all the parts and ready for assembly once the bearings arrive.
