I noticed that I have never posted in the cars section of this forum, although I have loved cars for as long as I remember. Hobby grade cars are very expensive for me, so I cobbled one together from those cheapo chinese cars and a brushless motor (retired as it has a bad bearing). The rest I scrounged around from my scrap parts bin, as will be evident from the pictures :giggle: It took me about a day to complete and am quite happy with the result.

Parts list:
D2826 1100kV brushless outrunner
HK Brushless Car ESC 30A
HK 9g servo
1250mAh Rhino LiPo
Cheap toy car

Its a belt drive car. Used a bobbin from a sewing machine on the axle and used a bicycle tube cutout as the belt. This is working for now, but I need to find something a bit better as the connection between the motor and the axle is too loose.

No idea about the top speed as I am yet to find a long enough stretch of smooth surface >:D, but definitely above 30kph. This thing accelerates slowly as the motors shaft slips a bit too much on the belt. Any suggestions?

This is a work in progress and have a lot planned for this ;)

I can post detailed pics if anyone is interested. Video will be up shortly ;)

Heres another one but quite unlike the other  ;D This is a sort of a test bed for a RC car brain of sorts I am working on. I have implemented only proportional differential control now. I wish to make a integrated pcb powered by a Lipo which takes input from any Rx and can directly control two brushed motors at 20 A each. All of it will be based on the arduino IDE and opensource.
My main targets are:
Cost below Rs600 for the board.
Robust control.
User configurable.
Made from easily accesible parts.

Parts list for this:
Arduino Uno Board
DIY L293D motorcontroller on custom pcb
Blinky lights ;D
Two 300rpm geared brushed motors
Lipo and 9v battery
Other electronic titbits :P

Interesting. How good are you at assembling simple circuits? There is a reason why I am asking this.

you did it!
I'm planning to use my toy car that i converted into a drift car, problem is i cannot use the 293D, I need something with 5A capacity.

BTW, how did you find out your transmitter stick values?

There is a great library "pinchangeint" and sample code already available. My code is a jumbled mess right now. I will post it after I get it tidied up a bit (May take a while). You need to have an arduino with usb serial cable. Then you may use the serial monitor to get the stick values.

Here's the video. Sorry for the quality as I lack the bandwidth to upload HD :P

Very nice, why arduino? whats its use?

The arduino is used to decode PPM signal coming from the rc Rx, do some processing on it and then pass it on to the IC H-bridge as PWM signal. If you open up any ESC, you will find a microcontroller, most often than not an atmega MCU. Simply put, the arduino along with the H-Bridge forms an ESC, but an infinitely configurable one. The possibilities are endless with this setup ;D
(The ardupilot mega(APM) is an arduino with some sensors)

What do you do if you want to use better motors? I have one which use 1A current..
do I have to change the l293D chip?

And
can I use the APM board rather than the arduino?

L293D is rated to provide 600mA continuous and peak 1.2A per channel.

If you need an H-Bridge with higher current rating, then L298 would be a decent upgrade. You would also need a few diodes to protect the driver from back currents from the motors.

lastRites

L298 is not a logical upgrade for the l293d. Look at the SN754410. Its a drop-in replacement for the L293D and supports upto 1A continuous per channel. The next step up for me would be discrete MOSFET and relay drive.

BTW the APM has custom pin mapping. Go for the UNO. Best way to learn arduino.

I have one pro mini and and arduino leonardo with me.
Just wanted to know whats the easiest way to provide this amount of current.
and will 4S lipo work with this thing?

Yes. But the current is the killer here. Don't exceed 1A.

hmm. also there's available a motor controller- sabertooth 2x12RC. I had one but sold it because I needed money.

There are innumerable motor controllers available :P But almost all of them cost a bit too much.
