Did anyone of you measured the top speed of your RC vehicle ever?
If yes, how.
I am expecting some other way than radar gun..
Anything other than a radar gun will be inaccurate.
You can always drive your car along the RC to get an idea of the speed, but it will never be accurate as you will have to calculate speedo error etc.
If you have a cheap GPS enabled phone, you can install the phone in the vehicle with top speed recording application (should be freely available depending on the OS i.e. symbian or windows) Most of the GPS phones have speed being calculated via GPS.
However, only if you are willing to take a chance with your phone ;D and again, the data may not be very accurate. :)
Make a friend stand 100 mtr from you with a stop watch, ask him to start the stop watch when the plane passes over you and stop the stop the watch when the plane passes over him. now divide 100 by the time you've got, thats your speed.

i have an android with that app (moto xt270 BTW)
but i dont want to take a huge risk...lol
BTW i just want to get a rough estimate
I am thinking to try the stopwatch idea.
BTW car idea is cool too but i cant drive the RC car straight. It skids and there is some kind of prob with the servo alignment...what to do?
Well if you can calculate the Max RPM on load and the circumference of the tyre:
Rpm X circumference = distance travelled / minute (a)
Speed = (a X 60)
This is purely theoretical. The RPM while driving will be less due to lad , drag and slip also comes into picture.
if you have an android then you can do this :)

You will find the app here http://www.xioptics.com/james/rcspeedo/android_manual.php
What kind of problem with the servo? Not centering?
Ya
let me give you a cheapest and most reliable option.
Use GPS tracklog. I use it everyday, tested upto 2175 Kmph (ie 2.05 Mach)
1.5 inch GPS Shows longitude, latitude, 5 inch MINI GPS portable GPS outdoors GPS Show longitude, latitude,
1. Show the direction and distance of the destination.
2. Destination point can be set, maximum 16 points.
3. Record the distance you travelled, and the time you spent.
4. Show longitude, latitude, and altitude information.
5. Speed measurement.
6. Display accurate time synchronized by satellite.
7.Power:Built-in lithium-ion battery.
8.Dimensions:6.5x5.3x2.1cm.
9.Accessories: USB cable,Users manual,keychain.
You can use garmin GPS called the Rhino for real time on demand Measurement, PM for how to (Obviously for Free advice). I am not into any type of business, for now atleast.

what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
COOL!!!!!
thanks vikas, anonymous is better. yeah tested it myself, 2.05 M at 50,000ft ROC/D of 14kms/min. Lock is good. Works great. GPS must see the sky. i can send you some tracklog, u can view it on Garmin Mapsource. Expensive Option of Garmin (Lotsa models available) Garmin 72H is not bad.
I agree Garmin or any GPS would be far better than any other tool. Usually GPS uses 3 satellite to track down your position , speed and other information. I think the data would be far more accurate when compared to any other measure in same budget.
i dnt want to get in GPS stuff...!
there is one with a wireless link, 2.4 g, one with blue tooth link, real time feedback from RC, its great, got one from ebay for some 500 bucks, thats there in my trainer, live feedback to my lappy with a software called compegps/google earth (If online). great stuff, try it out, you will love it
this one looks great... and for that price... got any link for the same or company brand or model number? I am planning to use programmable GPS modules in my 'real' car for various features... like auto adjustment of car speaker volume, general feedback/warnings
I always wanted to buy a garmin forerunner series watch. But way too expensive for the lil walking I do.
Tried the 100 m method and the GPS method, both results were pretty close....:)
Thats good news
Thank you, your help was appreciable....:)
