Can anyone tell me what to do when your parcel is held by customs. The tracking website isindicatingitwas held on 31-jan-2014 ..
1/31/2014 12:43 PM   Arrival at inward office of exchange   DELHI FPO
1/31/2014 4:07 PM   Held by customs   DELHI FPO
there has been no updations since then, a week has past. Do i need to contact them or just sit back and hope for the parcel to arrive at home :). Meanwhile the parcel contains some used phones (Samsung) which were sent by relative. these are gifts sent by my relative from US.

aman1256

Utkarsh it happens my buddy because now If I see that I have my cousin have ordered some tools for his engineering project so you have to wait he I waiting from 45 days and he has not contacted customs till now what for more few days you may receive it because these lazy guys don't update tooo :)

And @nav You know these courier department are very lazy you have to wait my friend maybe your parcel has come To Foreign Post Office and will be delivered you know this can also happen . Patience Is virtue :)

navgag33

Yeah i got the update it now says invoice missing. Well according to few members they adviced me to wait and hope for the best. That is what i am going to do now sit back and forget about the gift for a week or two then try to cal'em and see if i can do something about it. i Don't have the invoice and it's a genuine gift, Not a case where people buy stuff from website and declare as a gift so hopefully everything will go well.. Thanks for the replies and suggestions every1.
And does any1 else had faced this problem of MISSING INVOICE. it will be really great if someone can share their experience about this.
INdian Customs is such  an >>>>>> :banghead:  :banghead:

SideWinder

Since reason for holding the item is "Missing Invoice", they will either try to assess the value of the contents and charge you accordingly; or send you a notice to produce invoice. Anyhow both the methods would take there own time for sure.

Only gifts under a value of Rs 5000/- is duty free, and if the value exceeds, you will be "dutied" for the entire value of the item.
Had it been a single phone, you would have escaped the hassle, but since its "phones", they will most probably charge you. And Im assuming the value of the gifts to be more than Rs 5000/-

Now its upto you if you want to contact them or not. I dont know how you are going to prove to them value of used phones without contacting them, anyways do let us know the outcome.

Hello All

I am also facing some problem regarding my parcel. Please guide me what to do next.

My parcel has been send from US & when I track it online(http://ipsweb.ptcmysore.gov.in/ipswebtracking/) I get the following information : -

2/6/2014 4:56:49 PM   INDIA   DELHI FOREIGN POST OFFICE   Record item customs information (Inb)   Air   DELHI FOREIGN POST OFFICE
Retention reason : Invoice missing

It is a gift & I do not have the invoice with me. Please tell me what to do ?

Regards

Hello. Friends. My parcel is "Held by customs" at KOLKATA FPO since 1/30/2014. Don't know why. I imported some items for a project at my University. I got a Customs Duty Exemption Certificate and other necessary documents since the items are for a project at a Public Funded Institution and not for any commercial gain.

However, I have to send the documents to Customs but don't know where to send.

Can anyone help?

SideWinder

I would suggest you contact them first before sending in any documents.

General Post Office
7, B B D Bag, Kolkata - 700001
22105048, 22438607

Foreign Post in Calcutta Gpo
12,3RD Flr, K S Roy RD,
Calcutta Gpo, Kolkata - 700001
22155443, 22481560, 22480808,

Try to contact numbers in the second address.Addresses may be correct but phone numbers may be outdated since google cannot be trusted.

nairitb

Thanks for the numbers. I called them up. 22480808 was working. They just said the package is with Customs. They don't have any contact info of Customs office and told me to collect info from elsewhere  ???  :(

SideWinder

Alright, all this time I assumed they all worked within the same building, different departments. Anyhow this is what I could find, hope it works out.

PRO, Custom House,15/1, Strand Road,Kolkata
Contact No. 033-22437665

nairitb

Thanks. What do you think? Should I call them or send the documents to that address with a forwarding letter?

SideWinder

1 and 1/2 months is the maximum I wait, and items have always reached before the deadline. My only reason for not contacting them is so that it doesnt draw unnecessary attention.

If you have required documents or are not bothered with duty payable then you should contact them.

I think even tho if the item being imported is not for any commercial use it may still be dutiable depending on the value of the item; since the item is not being imported by the public institution itself, but them Im no expert.

Do let us know the outcome if you happen to call them.

nairitb

The project is partly funded by a Govt Agency. And that's how I got the Duty Exemption Certificate. Anyway will post the outcome of this incident. Thanks...

I received a letter for providing an invoice but i don't have one. What should i do now. I am thinking of contacting them tomorrow i received the letter today evening. Any one please suggest me what to do.

nairitb

Contact the seller to give you an invoice. I also got a letter from Customs Dept today asking me for Invoice, Copy of I.E.C (not applicable to me as I am not a merchant), Identification of Goods, Purpose of importation of goods, Uses of imported of Goods. I was expecting it. So I have all the documents ready. Will send the documents tomorrow.

navgag33

I don't have the invoice and it's not been bought it's a geniune gift i don't even know if they have the invoice for the gift. And are you going to mail them these documents or E-mail. Could u tell me the procedure. It will be really helpful.

nairitb

Tell the person who gave you the gift to write a letter (email) to you regarding the parcel saying that it contains bla bla bla and why it was sent. Send this letter to Customs office along with your own letter telling them that it is a genuine gift to you and no currency exchange was involved. Send the documents by Speed Post. You'll find the address in the letter from the Customs dept.

I got mine from Kolkata Customs and it contained full postal address and their telephone number. I'll send the documents to them.

Remember, try not to go to Customs office in person. Always communicate with them through letters.

nairitb

Reply them for each document that they ask.

Copy of IEC: Tell them you are not a merchant and you did not import the item. It was sent to you as a gift.
Invoice: No invoice because you did not buy it.
Purpose/Use of Goods: For personal use.
Identification of Goods: Tell them what is inside the parcel. Quote the person who sent you the gift as you dont know what is inside the parcel AS YOU HAVE NOT RECEIVED.

I think these are sufficient.
