The upcoming Gran Turismo 5 game on the PS3 seems be just amazing in terms of graphics realism.  No wonder people are using PS3s to brute force passwords, there is so much processing power in them !

Brute force??PS3??Wonderful.I thought that brute force was the realm for supercomputers. As in Dan Brown's digital fortress.By the way,is the mutating strings concept in digital fortress true? Then what is the use of brute force attacks?

We used to deploy Linux Beowulf Clusters comprising of Idle Lab computers way back in 2000 to crack SAM Passwords... I guess the PS3 is equivalent to at least 40 of them!! People also use nVidia GPUs to crack WPA  (Wifi  LAN) keys!!

So, isn't it illegal to do that.Crack passwords for LAN?Only once,My brother and I connected to  a wireless network but disconnected immediately. My brother just did it to show me that it could be done.ANd also, are the mutating strings in digital fortress existing?

Some WiFi encryption schemes are easy to crack (read WEP), while others are significantly harder. In any case, it is illegal in general.

In college, people do various activities as a part of projects and research. Those are done in controlled environments with disclosure to relevant authorities (even if it is the teachers/professors in the same department), and would not be considered illegal.
