Hi all,

i have this doubt in my mind, a lot of free plans available on the net from flite test, this website provide their plans for free download but do specify "these plans are not for commercial use".

Q1) So lets say i take a plan from Flite Test ( FT TINY TRAINER) i laser cut the design on depron using the FT TINY TRAINER plans and sell the laser cut depron for profit. Am i legally breaking any rules if i am selling the laser cut depron?

please note for credits purpose i will mention the designer name and company name (no use of company logo)? am i still breaking the law?

Q2) secondly if i have paid for a plan, converted the drawings to DXF , laser cut the plans and sold it for profit. Am i still breaking the law? please note for credits purpose i will mention the designer name and company name (no use of company logo)

so i searched this on the forum and couldn't find anything of this sort, so just raising a point

your inputs would be helpful
regards,

I don't know that you're breaking the rule. But your (Q1 and Q2) exist.
Q1:- the flite test plans are being laser cut and selling by (vortex rc) https://www.vortex-rc.com/

Q2:- normally the LHS do buying a plan then make a laser cut kit according to the demand. Or some LHS will import the kit.

There will not be problem if you sell at good price and quality.

Maybe you take the FT plan, do some mods, built a prototype, and test it out. Mostly it will fly ok and You will have a original design , so no need to worry about Copyright issue at all . What do you think ?    And anyway you wont be selling to the USA and competing with FT in any way.

I think making it 1 cm smaller will be the game changer!
i definitely wont be competing with them, so it should go unnoticed!

I think if you make it bigger, its better, because smaller makes things fly bad and faster .

True, small planes tend to be unstable ! Let's see need to make a supply chain! And also need to learn how to fly !

Why not just be honest and seek permission from FT?

even crashing requires a flight......

If you can get approval from FT, that would be a much much better option, because then you have the option of adding the tagline :FT approved:,  so Iyer sir's opinion is a good option.

I think emailing them would be the best way to go forward,
Hopefully they don't come up with crazy demands,
Really appreciate your opinions!

So an update with regarding this , I had written a email to flite test for permission to  use their free to download plans to build speed build kits for sale, I got reply from them saying they cannot provide permission to use their plans for commercial purpose! They suggested I become a authorized distributer of thiers in India!

Mohammed Naveed

However I've spoken to few other designers who gave their permission to use their plans to make speed build kits, I'll update you once I have a good working model!
