Title: Denatured alcohol
Post by: RCRajChennai on July 25, 2013, 03:02:46 PM
Hi,

I'm a brand new member. So please forgive if I have posted in the wrong place.

I need denatured alcohol (actually for cleaning the old light seals, the sponge, "residue" on my film cameras).
(I am writing to this forum because after an Extensive search on the net, this forum is the only place that even mentions denatured alcohol).

I am writing from Chennai. I've been told it is illegal in Tamil Nadu.

1) Does anyone know if that is true?
2) Is it available in Bangalore (I travel there sometimes)?
3) Is there an equivalent to denatured alcohol - petrol, cigarette lighter fluid, white petrol, white spirit etc.?

Any help would be great! I've really struggled to find a good source of info.

Please feel free to get in touch with me.

Thanks.

Govt Distilleries make Rectified Spirit and Denatured Spirit. Since your requirement is in very small quantity you can try back door methods.
By the way senior forum members is Methanol one of the above spirits?

Regards.

normally pure ethyl alcohol is referred to as spirit which can be used for human consumption, because of the govt control it can not be sold in retail. the version which is sold in retail has some chemicals added to it for making it unsuitable for human consumption and it is called "denatured spirit". however for general cleaning purposed propanol or n-propyl alcohol is used which is what you get if you buy switch cleaning fluid from electronic shop. for the purpose mentioned, IMO methanol (which is methyl alcohol) can also be used.
