Could anyone shed any light on why most english
serials/movies on TV have english subtitles too ?

This has me scratching my head ......

ankitbaid

maybe they dont expect all the viewers to catch up with the audio...:P...lol

iamahuman

They think we can't understand english..... >:( >:(

A little off from the topic but on STAR world, during the advertisement for their HD feed, they had a caption which said "Asli HD".Its not like we don't understand English!!!! >:(

good observation.... :giggle:

I think as english is widely spoken language and it has many accents of speaking. so subtitles are helpful in understanding movie/serial irrespective of accent of speaking.

anandp

for example if we talk about US, then there are people of different race/origin who speaks different languages (i.e. Spanish, Chinese, Korean etc...) and don't know the English or physically challenge to hear. Same pattern works in UK or any part of world where people even can't understand English but can relate the movie with English/regional language subtitles, as every movie/serials are not possible to dub in all languages.

even mostly all serials/movies played on television in US also have the subtitle, for ease of watching for different language people. The good option with the TV sets their is you can switch off the titles or can change the title language, as like many of children channels played in India  have the audio options in multiple languages, but may have subtitle options too in future.

It's my assumption and may be correction required :D

Aren't we missing out something important here? What about the hearing impaired? Subtitles give them a chance to enjoy TV just like we do. Also a lot of people find it difficult to follow different accents. It also makes sense if someone is talking to you or just talking loudly in the same room. Subtitles help out in that scenario as well.

But I do agree that sometimes its irritating cause your eyes always seem to get drawn to the subtitle.

you can switch it off if you are using dth service.

PS: Can we rename this topic to something like "Randomness" (with the authors consent) where we can discuss important random topic like these ;)  That way all randomness will be contained in one mother thread :)
For example i came here because i wanted to let you guys know that there is a very good program on pylon racers running on discovery turbo right now :)

Chatter Zone's definition on the board is "Feel free to talk about anything and everything that is not covered in the other boards. This is RC India's lounge to sit back, relax and ponder aloud."

lol.. this is us sitting back, relaxing and pondering why subtitles! :D

Nothing like that man. The thing with several of the forums is that people are too serious about everything and forget the fact that they're here first and foremost to have some fun. I mean hobbies probably started out as a way for us to escape our busy schedules and life.

The way I look at it, if we're being civil and understanding and remain within the confines of decency you won't have to actually read up on the rules. You automatically follow them.

I hope this forum doesn't wind up all high strung and tense. ;) The Chatter zone is a good place to discuss the other interests in our life. Maybe we should start a thread about what we do when we're not RC'ing.. It'll be a good place to get to know each other. What say?

Points to Saikat for that one ;)

If you want we can twist the topic to fit the RC realm. Let's say subtitles help me enjoy my favorite show when I'm tuning the nitro truck ;)

I'll go with the aid to the hearing impaired first and then with the difference in accents. Often, I've seen that the American / European voice overs (Nat Geo) don't elicit subtitles but when one of the speakers is of an Indian origin, subtitles appear on the screen.

Saikat, first flush must have been a jolly good show, for you to be posting this old chap! I say what............ ;D

I hate that actually. Especially when the non native speaker's English is much better than the native himself!! I've seen that happen a lot.

Their English might be better but its no good if the Americans cant understand their accent. Don't forget, the world is their (Americans) playground, we are just watching the game from the fence  >:(

That's a long time ago bro. Things are much better now. You know a lot of native americans hate the way america is portrayed internationally. A lot of my friends keep complaining that we judge them based on what we see on TV. You have no idea how many of them hated the Bush administration for making a fool out of the country!

Yes happens many times on the documentaries aired on NG or discovery. Just dont know why they put up subtitles when you dont need it

@shashank - this is the issue of the broadcasting of channels and TV sets we have, other countries you can switch them off, as they are optional their :D
