I am starting this thread to motivate young guys and girls to Join IAF, so far it has been my home, religion, country , family , everything. Lot of details are available Here (http://careerairforce.nic.in/index1.asp?lang=1&ls_id=2&lid=2&level=1&pid=0), any specific questions you can ask me, from time to time will keep posting some images etc to keep the interest alive
look at the file name . you will get the answer :giggle:
I cleared everything in NDA Entrance, then flunked the eyesight test :( 8-)
So I wnt to IIT instead ;)
Sanjay
Santhosh !
That was on purpose, some starting point, good observation.
Sanjay
i wanted to be an engineer , be an IITian badly ended up as pilot. life has its ways. (like the pilot in you never died , so did the aeronautical engineer in me, tried my hand on AMIE later in life, like you did with the aeromodels)

flunked the eyesight test ;)
Sanjay
is that you are winking :giggle:
a lot of guys have been PMing me sending me messages on the FB, etc, as regards joining IAF, thought all that little clarifications can be under one roof
Just applied to the UES-2013 Scheme! getting myself prepared for all other entries possible,
Cleared NDA, Screwed SSB! then took 10+2 TES again Screwed up SSB!
The photo is of a IL 78MKI "MARS" refueling your bird! :P ??
Good Jatayu, tell us something about the type of refuelling.
All the best , a lot of guys i know have taken coaching from here, may like to give it a try. last i met Col Deol was in 1988. i beleive he is no more, may be their quality may not be the same, please enquire , before taking the plunge of coaching, but coaching for SSB does help
http://www.minerva-academy.com/
Sir..above photograph shows ascene from a refuelling session..
Sir i know i lost to serve my country through joining Air Force..because i am aged..and dreams that if i found this advice and guidance at the age of 18 or 19..prestigiously serve my country up my last breath..hope our youngsters will notice this valuable oppertunity, to lead a prestigious life through serving our Nation..Jai Hind...Sir.. :salute:
Well MARS was meant to be "Mid Air Refueling System" Currently 2 types of Pods are involved one called the Flying boom and other is the Probe-drogue system.
My dad worked in IL-76 as a weapon fitter and electrician, uncle is still with An-32's
have heard about this academy, after 2 unsuccessful attempt at SSB i took my coaching from
www.cavalierindia.com/
Good to hear that ! he may know me, there are a lot of Ex-Minerva in the forces
Dad and uncle are PBOR's,
Most my trainers in cavalier india we Ex-Minerva's :P
That was my childhood dream too. I had cleared my SSB, PABT, and medicals for Airforce in 1992 and had my name in merit list of Airforce and Naval Aviation, however since coming from a non service background, had to give in to my dad's whim that I should have my feet on mother earth all the time and had to opt for Army only. :'(
May be some day Param fulfills his dream in Airforce. {:)}
I have been asking one of the 'youngest' flyer of our field (class 8th ) to aim for IAF right from now. Govt is already getting new Gripen/Typhoon for them....
on the side note.... Gusty sir, i have seen truck flying off due to the turbine swash of such large transport planes. Isn't it too turbulent for bringing small jet so close, let alone precise aligning with the boom ?
applied the 82AEC,exam will be on 26th feb..
i would go all the way to air force pilot only if I were'nt wearing -3D glasses.. to all the airforce pilots :hatsoff: and :salute: to the ground support and engineers too !
Great!!!
I am also preparing for CDSE which is next month (12th Fab). It is aviation that flows in my nerves. And I can't resist. I was also offered 4yr Aeronautical engineering degree coarse in 2008 by IIAEIT(Indian Institute of aeronautical engg and Information technology) Pune. The problem that time was my parents were not able to afford tuition fees. Only mom being my guardian, applying for Education loan was too much trouble those days atleast in MP.
Now at this point of my life, I can't miss a single chance to get in aviation and serve country.
Gusty sir! I have a little question. How one can prepare for SSB without going coaching classes. My two friends are forcing me to join a tutorial for this. But the problem is same, "$$$".
Don't misunderstand me, I don't intend to give a wrong impression here. But as we all talk in same language, ie; RC and share experiences here. I am comfortable enough to ask for guidance from the seniors.
Please tell us the tips to get prepared for SSB at home.
Thanks.
some books are available in the market..u can use them while preparing..last june i attended my first ssb of Indian Navy, cleared the first round but i was out on the 5th day..have not gone for any coaching class..
Oh great! I hope this time you will clear SSB. And Thanks.
IMHO, you should not be taking coaching classes for clearing SSB. Like what krish had said books are available for it and they are good enough to know what to expect apart from that you should be acting just what you are.
In SSB they are looking for a confident, optimistic team player who has a fair amount of IQ and good OLQ ( Officer Like Qualities). If you have it in U, you will automatically get selected like a breeze. If you don't have it in you then there is not point getting selected because then the rest of the tenure in service is going to be a **** hole for you because you are not made for it.
Faking it after going through some coaching class is last thing you should do if you really need to do some good for yourself. You would really do well in some other profession than in Services.
Those days there were no coaching classes for it. Dad got me CSR booklet he came across during his one of tours which gave me idea of what to expect. I had to fall back to the only forces guy I knew those days that was Army Officer from 2 TN Armd NCC supporting our college . He was very helpfull. What guidance he offered me was at second para above.
tried my hand after 10+2 at nda.... did not clear.( reason : did not study)
will surely give it a try after engineering.. not just airforce. but any defense wing.. but first priority IAF.. then IA and then IN
vish and i share the same story...... :banghead: :banghead: we two are two spoiled brats in this league
vish i am with u let us get our so called degrees till then i will loose some weight and get physically fit too...will not miss this last chance
if i want to get in.... i have to loose 30Kgs..... they dont need a pilot weighting 100kg
same here my bmi is more than urs
i suggest we should try to land away our models far away from us and go running to get them....in coming three years if we do this every sunday ...we will definitely loose 10 kgs in three years ....rest 20 diet control and exercise
ONE QUESTION ... are computer engineers allowed in IAF ?.....if yes there is still a silver lining else agalay janam may dekhengay :banghead:
vish ur still lucky ur a mechanical guy...if not air technical field is till there for you

Future is really bright for the guys Joining now, they will get to fly the State of the Art Fighter, Transport and Helis. The closest i fly to a modern fighter is M2K, which is still 80s Tech.

It is turbulent and it is not easy, however, practice and skill matters, as regards jet wake , you both are traveling at the same speed and you are connecting from below. the wake is above you. see this video this is called the whiplash
http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=ff2_1187977373
here is a self assessment tool developed by Defence Institute of Psychological Research (DIPR) . see if you have it in you , however the tool does not dissuade anybody from applying to Armed Forces except for giving an indication towards the candidate's potentiality for the job.
http://www.drdo.res.in/cgibin/dipr/index.php
got the result.....
"High Potential to become an Officer in Indian Armed Forces"
Congrats ! some more guys, give it a try
OK, I tried it. I had to forge my birth certificate as I'm '55 born & they don't take before '69 :banghead:
This is what they said:
Dear SanjayRai,
Assess Yourself
High Potential to become an Officer in Indian Armed Forces
Genuineness of the test result depends on how true you have been to yourself
:salute: Jai Hind! :salute:
Its always a good choice to join IAF, but many people have a mutual question about getting paid.
They say their salaries are not as they expected. I mean, living a 7 star luxury life can be a real challenge for IAF/Army guys.
Is it really true?
milind u might have got a bit wrong there.... have a look at this..
http://careerairforce.nic.in/career_opp/caropp_officer_payperks.html
and i do not think a person living a 7star luxury life has that much out of life as the defense personnel do.... look at the photo i had posted in the previous
http://www.rcindia.org/chatter-zone/join-iaf-it-is-a-glorious-service/msg86558/#msg86558
all the gold in the world will not put you in the controls of a machine which flies at more than 1mach
hmm..
I got..
High Potential to become an Officer in Indian Armed Forces
does this test also take into account potentiality for IAF as well as IN ??
DIPR is a common organization for all three services, this is the organization that trains the selectors, take their word as gospel,
I got it too.
High Potential to become an Officer in Indian Armed Forces.
I'm also High Potential category. But I Know the the IAF would not take me. ;-)
I couldn't finish the test. :P
I guess I can't join the military at 16... :P
I answered 4 questions correctly and gave up. I attribute it to not having enough patience.
EDIT: I took it again and guess what? I have "High Potential to become an Officer in Indian Armed Forces". Is this a standard answer or is it that everyone from this thread who took this test is actually capable of being an officer in the Armed Forces :D ?
well, despite having everything, my height stopped me!! now trying brain to join HAL or DRDO so that the short height pilots will be eligible in future!!
anyway this is a good effort, and if IAF want to influence youngsters it must have its motivational videos on youtube like the paki army channel.
Remember when Red army was falling back at stalingrad in ww2, it was a army news paper idea by Nikita Kurschev to raise the people's mental strength to fight for nation. we are facing same crisis here, with the technical difference is that our news channels showing IAF is full of non flying aircraft only!!
great inspiration.. :salute: :salute: :salute:
here is the 79th anniversary video, all flying aircraft, if you look carefully ....you should see somebody :)

in fact lot of people in the yesteryears were rejected because of being tall, HAL, DRDO is better, we need to be self reliant, this service will last longer than actual combat flying

he also shot his own soldiers of stalingrad who didnt stand and fight, including generals who did a controlled retreat to reorganise and attack again. most initial phases of war. people were fed like canon fodder to the german onslaught, thanks to Nikita Sergeyevich. war is ugly, no doubt on that, in retrospect, it is the Russian winter and ill equipped for weather that got the Germans. by no means i am taking the credit away form the red army and the newspaper,

Too many questions, gave up after 5 questions. :banghead:
Yes, That I need, a Video!! I will share it in our Collage group for juniors!!
Please upload any interview with veteran IAF officers or a film on Indo-Pak dog fights, coz those will attract more youths!!
About the Red Army Story: We need to learn how they succeeded, not the way they failed, I am not in total support of the Russian govt at that time but some of their ideas inspired me as they did for their youths!! Ex:Vasily Grigoryevich Zaytsev!!
anyway your initiative is really good, and I wish all the best for our Air force's future!!

About the Red Army Story: We need to learn how they succeeded, not the way they failed, I am not in total support of the Russian govt at that time (as stalin was also no less than Hitler in killing humans), but some of their ideas inspired me as they did for their youths!! Ex:Vasily Grigoryevich Zaytsev!!
Bad Weather: Well the High Tech German engineering also failed due to that coldest ever weather in Siberia which may happen in 10,000 years although attack on Russia was a crazy strategy by Hitler after winning France and almost upto London!!
anyway your initiative is really good, and I wish all the best for our Air force's future!!
stalin? what about lenin? he was the one who took over the revolution and became first leader, he killed millions of russians during his reign and stalin just made it worse. hitler killed one of the community of his country and others died in the war of his craziness but remaining germany doesnt die of hunger. also what hitler did had happened in almost every muslim country and happening today too. so there is no comparision of russian madness and of hitler. hitler was bad, but lenin and stalin were devils who believed in theory of bloodshed for life (dialect theory of marxism)
though the discussion is good guys, we need to keep this thread relevant
PS
may be admin could cut these discussion to a seperate thread and let us continue the discussion there
No need of that, If you want just point it of my posts, and I will delete or modify it!!
no panda bau, it is a good discussion, no doubt on that
;D
Was that a Kulbit / Frolov Chakra completion at 1:22? In that case the full sequence would have been mind blowing.
Somewhere earlier in this thread there was a mention of MARS. I have some very fond memories of my sojourn with them at Agra in 2007. I inherited my first Blue Flying Suit/Flying Boots from them. The second (the NATO Green) was kind courtesy a fellow RCI member, who would not like to be named here.
This is my humble tribute to the IAF:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLHSn2D6lPo
To rub salt into my wounds at 47+, this is what they said after I zipped through the tests. Not that I am unhappy where I stand today, however, the elusive uniform continues to haunt me.................

Yes I know what you mean Gusty. I want to thank Wing Co Chaudhury (ex Mars ATC Eagle) for the Flying Suit and the boots in 2007. Let's not discuss this any further - it still hurts.
Pretty many of us, I see an RCIAF (Ardh vayusainik bal ;)?)...atleast for those like me who missed it when chances were larger

Just curious... do you generalize everything in life this easily ?
Have you got any idea what it takes to walk outside in -60 degrees ? I don't, but I can imagine.
There are bad apples, but I hope you grow up to have a wider view of things. Guess you only look at a section of the high ranking officers, not the foot soldiers.
-1-1-1 success.ahead
u might have seen a few, but i have seen thousands to be proud of.
its not about money but honour
i missed it this time but would gladly join the army in my next life
to anwar ,they are not working for free in -60 degress they do get very good perks for special posting.

"IF someone will come to your land then wont you find your self strong enough to defend your land ?"
Great! Since our politicians are also corrupt and do not serve the people, let's remove them and run this country ourselves. Also since many Govt. officials are corrupt, lets dissolve all departments like PWD, PHE, Industries, BRO etc. and do all the work ourselves.
Stop talking nonsense here. Just because of a handful of corrupt individuals you can't vilify an entire Organisation.
Did I say every one is non-corrupt ? I would even agree that discipline/corruption problems are increasing, and the public needs to be aware and even vocal about that. But putting everyone in the same bucket is, pardon me, juvenile/dumb.
I hope you are smart enough to realize that you are "generalizing". If people followed your account, every politician in India is corrupt, every citizen including you and me have no sense of cleanliness, and so on... Got the point ?
In fact, why stop at the military ? Let us blame every single individual for every problem that we come across !
Regarding salary etc again, I can only say you seem to have hung around the senior folks. I hope the light dawns on you some day.
PS: Regarding looking outside India etc, I am going to ignore that because you have no idea how much I have interacted with outside India. I will only say you make yourself look a bit foolish on this forum with that comment :)
{:)}
I can only say this !!
Just now i mentioned this to my spouse, how lucky i am to serve my nation
If I could qualify, pass all of the tests, get my wings, of course I would want the life of a jet pilot. You get to fly the fastest and most expensive toys and get paid for it too! The price is the willingness to give your life to your country if you get the call and are placed in harm's way, ie Combat Air Patrol over a hostile area.
All RC forums will have a sprinkling of licensed pilots and then the rest are happy to be grounded RC pilots. Two different breeds with diverse opinions and values. Still, the conversation is about sharing and should remain respectful or the dialogue stops and the shariing stops and then the forums die.
What about the Indian Navy? Don't they have pilots too? Perhaps some are here insterested in landing on carriers?

168 are not few I far as I know in the world I am living. It is enough to generalize and there are many more cases before this to generalize, if you have seen india more than me then why considering -60 degrees as they are doing a work which normal people cant do ? you should have recalled your global knowledge before pointing out -60C work condition as achievement as you said above " because you have no idea how much I have interacted with outside India "
168 out of somewhere around 1.3million ? How about 100x that ? 16800 out of 1.3million (active members per online records) ? That is still 0.013 percent. You vilified 99.987 percent ? Even if it is 1000x, you are still vilifying over 99 percent. In the world the rest of us are living in, that is just being stupid ;)
I am normal, and I wouldn't find it easy to spend an extensive period of time in -60 degrees, with the need to go out in blizzards etc. I guess you are "more normal than most" (courtesy George Orwell).
Do you really want to continue belittling yourself :)

I agree with VC Sir.
In general non combatants should refrain from commenting on the Armed Forces unless they have served at least a few years.
Talk is cheap. Please go to Drass, Kargil, Leh between Oct and March.
Those who have not been there have NO RIGHT TO COMMENT.
One presumes that our correspondent has been in the Army long enough to comment with authority.
Perhaps he may like to identify himself? Maybe he is a Minister or an MP!
Great Thread Rusty Sir,
Well yes indeed.... been my life too....
For the rest of the guys there are simple way to crack the SSB... nothing too great... my son took no coaching just my experience and help from another friend... he cracked it twice and then joined the NDA.... maybe I too can be of some help.... PM me if needed.
Well... for the non initiated into the world of Blue Uniform.... well... the life is tough not to mention the least but GOOD (in fact better than most other jobs of this world).... After reading the thread over and over I just have to say one thing.... Just go back and listen to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJKhLa_EnRg# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJKhLa_EnRg#) even Nehruji could not stop himself... also the world over the ones doing this with full passion (its not just a job... its your life).... the new generation song will sum up everything for you... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70Ikj1hZDnw# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70Ikj1hZDnw#) Wish we had someone sing such a song for our heroes.
Best wished to all those who are still braving the extreme cold and harsh conditions.. who hve done it and the ones who will..

You should try to use this forum to attract youngsters to the Army like Gusty's pitch for the Air Force
I always thought Gusty's pitch was equally good enough for all forces.
Like in Air force not all are actually flying, Army too has its own share of tough life in some parts, though it has its own charm and glamour and its a good life in its own ways. I believe Instead of anyone canvasing for it, would be always better that a really motivated aspirant who is well informed through first hand interaction with forces guys who thinks he has it in him who is willing to go through with it volunteers for it.
For the motivated aspirants, SSB interview selection after the preliminary exams does an accurate assessment in identifying the one who actually has it in him for this glorious life. Like I was advised when I went through with it, it would be best if one goes through with it without any coaching and by being naturally yourself. Only those who gets selected has those temperament and qualities naturally and really has it in him for this glorious service. One who does not make it are those who will not be satisfied with this different lifestyle because of their nature and they will be better off and successful pursuing a different career for themselves.
Do you have it in you advertisement does a good job of attracting youngsters. Selection process does an excellent job of identifying and screening those who actually have it in him. unless he is a volunteer by personal motivation, he is better off pursuing a different career for himself.
I am not going to force even my son if he does not volunteers himself let alone pitching for anyone else. ;D
+1 to sandy. Recently I met some youngsters who were army officer aspirants, sons of air force officers.
As for me, if not for flying I would've been in the navy, a naval diver.
Today pay is good. Life is challenging. And more than anything job satisfaction is very good.
All you youngsters should give it a shot.
For all who didn't know. Sandy was selected to join as a pilot in the IAF. his old man said "son I want your, at least one feet firmly on the ground, " so Air & Water was out. Land was in. So, he is, an assault engineer, the ones who lead any battlefield, even before infantry.
Gusty :hatsoff: :hatsoff:
I will be always be enthused, inspired and hold in high esteem my course mate, buddy with whom I have been fortunate enough to train with in Academy and a brother officer Col Saurabh Singh Shekawat, Kirti Chakra, Shaurya Chakra, Sena Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal and many more commendations, the Indian Army's Living legend, Para Commando, One of the highly decorated officers of Indian Army, who I know closely, who has a Wiki page to himself, who has climbed Mount Everest thrice.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saurabh_Singh_Shekhawat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saurabh_Singh_Shekhawat)
Pertinent extract from the page
"In 2005 he ascended Mount Everest for a record third time, having previously done so in 2001 and 2003. He has also climbed Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, and Mount Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps and Western Europe. In October 2009 he led the joint Indo-Kazakh team to scale the Kazakhstan peak of Marble Wall peak in Kazakhstan."
Till date Shekhawat has scaled 14 peaks.
He has an Indian Army's Official Facebook page on him (where rest of us are discouraged to have one)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Colonel-Saurabh-SINGH-Shekhawat/569808136365342 (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Colonel-Saurabh-SINGH-Shekhawat/569808136365342)
Similarly, I will always be enthused and envious of Gusty, an illustrious and accomplished officer of many talents and more so because he is one of the best pilots who I know very closely who is still living to tell the tales of it.
Sadly we all Forces guys have a huge embargo on what we can share in social media sites about our experiences and life in the forces due to security constraints. I am sure Gusty is also having his equal share of thousands of photographs like me of our life and experience in forces.
There is no words to describe the feeling and experience which you have of how you feel the power of god in your hands when you are inside that Armoured Fighting Vehicle, which you drive around on the most difficult terrain, including under water fording, float across deep water crossings, where most of civilian vehicles will not dare to enter, the roar of the 1200 BHP engine of the Main Battle tank, who's pulse you can feel in every nerve endings of your body, the thundering shock effect of the blast off of the projectile ammunition when its leaving the barrel of the main gun, the feeling of achievement you get when you make a bridge of 100 mtrs across a river overnight for a crossing, the sense of gratification and purpose you get when you are approached for the most difficult tasks which a common man thinks is not possible for him and when you are involved in an aid to civil authority during a natural calamity like flood relief, earthquake, the places where the forces has taken you, seen, lived and experienced which a normal tourist can only dream of, when you are held in high esteem proudly by your own parents, family members, friends and fellow countrymen, When you are seen by them as a dependable soul.
Like every other good things in life this too comes with its equal share of hardships and penance.
when you look back at your life and the experience the forces has given you, no amount of money can offer such sense of gratification, purpose and fulfillment, which is only fortunate to any other man who leads his life of greater purpose for a noble cause.

Many of us are out of age for joining forces. But I will definitely encourage my son who is a 12th class student for joining.
Please take time to write how to join various forces. Students here will be encouraged.

What written tests and physiscal tests need to be passed in order to become a pilot?
If not in the airforce as a pilot then I'll like to join DRDO or HAL after engineering.
Well.. go with an open mind... no tensions.... and fell good about everything.... and have a positive mind...... you will get selected. The ones selected are not super humans.... but the have those qualities and it helps them maintain their head in difficult times..... As for physicals... more emphasis is on overall medical fitness... mot many make the grade at hospital when the tests are done. make sure you are in great health.... As for physical fitness... get into the Academy once they the academy with ensure that your physical fitness is up to the mark.
Best wishes
eyesight is perfect...
hearing also perfect...
height is 5 feet 10 inches...
then next year i'll try this exam also with other engineering entrances
Sure you can make it.... all it takes is that special FAUJI bent of mind to be able to do anything and win against all odds
Today is Air Force Day, the 8th October. The Air Force Day was officially started celebrating at 8th of October in the year 1932 as an auxiliary air force of Indian Empire. :salute: :salute: :salute:
So, it is the 82nd Birth Day. Let us all join the entire Nation in celebrating the Day. {:)} {:)} {:)}
My ardent and heartfelt best wishes to all those dedicated people / personnel who are a part and parcel of one of the most proven force and factor in guarding the Nation and one of the best in the world... :hatsoff: :hatsoff: :hatsoff:
Fortunately for us, we are having some of those illustrious persons amongst us. May God bless them all with health, wealth and happiness.
We, such people whose aspirations fly, but feet never leave the terra firma ( I am One) are real lucky, I feel. The younger generation is to get the inspiration. The onus to fulfill the need of the hour is on them.
Jai Hind Jai Bhatath.
Nice read for the interested.

hey,
i am only 14 and am aspiring to join the iaf....
i wear spectacles and the power is -1.5 in both...
is there any scope for me????
Very much, in ground duty branches, see the website even med criteria is given there
As a pilot...
my friend was mentioning that i can have lasik after 20 yrs of age and then join for ssc
.
WHAT IS .?
I am in my degree 3rd year pursuing B.com right now, is there a scope that I can join IAF via OTA?
I did not have math in my 10+2
well IAF requires only people with Physics and maths in their 12 at least for the flying branch. The navy too has similar rules. OTA or the IMA yes because that's where training for the Indian Army is done.
Okay, thank you sir.
I am to appear for CDS now, so anyways my first preference would be the Indian Army
Best wishes
Thank you sir :)
I was gung ho about joining IAF.wanted to be a fighter pilot.after XII cleared NDA written.went to ssb .failed both PABT and SSB itself.Later Found out that i have anxiety disorder and .most probably thats why was not selected.
ahh.life will never be the same again....
Closest thing is CPL and bush pilot in africa / amphibian pilot in canada. couple of buddies are flying there. very happy
