I think now I am getting it. Its not inertia nor the environment but the Gravity that is the culprit.

But then how Pendulam experiment is possible which is used to prove that earth is rotating?
Why the ball from Empire state building is falling 5 inch away from the exact vertical?

so can we outrightly reject the possibility of such an experiment ("large vessle......") ....?

BTW guys I miss air Crash Investigation on Net Geo :banghead:....but on You tube you can see full new episodes of it.  :salute:

@Kartik
What i think is we should not watch those show which shows only birds,animal, are wastage of time.Some of the shows are interesting but what to do after u watched the film.What is the need of watching lions hunting ,birds catching their pray.one time is enough for me.

Also their is a show on Sir Steven hawkins .He is great person. But most of the tym he tells useless things like whats would happen if this alien does this,what will happen if this planet collides with this.i know those are interesting but instead watching those watch shows like "I didn't know that" and sometime time warp (not always) will give us some USEFUL knowledge and information which could be used by you in some circumstances.

but they come on NG HD(air crash investigations)
snehal50samarpit -u misunderstood my questiom.The Question is the cause of EArth's 'Rotation' and not 'Revolution'.i hope u'll understand the terms correctly.BTW link here..

Man are u sick?World is not only made of of machines!!damn it!these days humans are so narrow minded!!.U dont like birds, the greenery and evrethng?oh gosh its bcoz of people like u by which our earth is changing and yeah..concrete jungles too!change ur mind snehal!otherwise nature will take its own stuff!.nd i never meant watching animal stuff i said might ships, megastructures stuff like that!oops forgot time warp..its my fav!

:salute: If you could drop a golf ball from the empire state building with no wind it would land nearly 5 inch of the true vertical due to rotation of the Earth. thank you VC sir

See this http://www.calacademy.org/products/pendulum/page12.htm

Yeah so it prove that earth moves ahead when u are in air  :bow: :bow:

AM i right ?

Assuming the theory is correct, would the ball not land 5" WEST ?

Because when the ball is dropped first it continues to move with the building which is moving with the earth i.e ~1500 km/h. Now while the building continues to move speed of the ball decrees due to drag caused by air (air resistance) thats why it falls behind.
Also I think Izmile has already answered your question  :headscratch:

asinghatiya

@sunlikestar - I know y ball fall away !! actually I intend to say that,  "yeah ball will deveate, because of earth's rotation.... than why not a big vessel in the air!!!!"

According to  Izmile its not possibel due to gravity :)....

It's not a "point of view". The earth rotates  from West to East. So the earth will have moved East wards during the time the ball takes to reach the ground. The ball should therefore land to the West.

Maybe you should give Ujjwaana your number!

Oh, well I think, we'll wait for Izmile to answer this.
In the mean time I just want to clarify one perspective, the ball doesn't deviate because of earth's rotation, it deviate because of friction with air. Earths rotation wants to keeps the ball moving (not letting it deviate) but air resistance causes the ball to loose its inertia.

kartikmadhira

Chill man.draw imaginary axes in all directions of the bulding.think on the first quadrant and the
4th quadrant in any north direction.i hope u'll understand!

kartikmadhira

@sunlikestar-man it is given that the air resistance is zero!

asinghatiya

Actually the condition given there is "no air" when ball is falling  :).... so I guess he is talking about an ideal Vacuume condition, hence no friction!!!
Even in that case Gravity will be acting !!!!
:-)

kartikmadhira

@asinghatiya...xactly as i said!but i said it first.. :giggle:

SunLikeStar

Yep gravity will be actiing But dont forget your friend inertia :) with the ball keeping its inertia it will keep moving with the building and you'll see no deviation.

asinghatiya

 :headscratch: sir thats wot this experiment says....that it will deviate in vacuume!!!!!

:headscratch: is it a viable (financially) project to create a vassel which lift itself (like a Heli) at a place and wait there till earth rotate and when his desired location reached it land there  ;D....

But ur question is good.I am too confused that what is the need of aeroplanes when we can travel anywhere on earth within 24 hrs. Maybe the wind is villain.

both of u. Yes it can be done. if u have money but u can only travel along the same circle i. e east to west. why would one want to travel in same direction always?

there is so much to write for all the question above but i am busy in office. maybe later.

snehal50 one question for u. If the Earth stopped rotating, would time stand still?
When you fly electric, fly clean, fly quiet, and fly safe!

 :bow: Good to hear from you....atleast one who think alike :thumbsup:.......

BTW good question to snehal50  :giggle:,,,he need to spent his today's night to answer this.......

I am also in office .... :'(....so much of workload.... :P.....but cant stop myself....everytime i see blinking red light on my blackberry...wihtout seeing it...I know I got a reply on RC india :)

@asingh,

If you perform the experiment in vaccum, the ball would hit dead center.. SLS is right, the ball's inertia, and the gravity will keep it on track to the center. The Focault's pendulum will have deflection only when the oscillation is there.. If its allowed to stand still it will be pointing to its center. The case of a free falling ball in vaccum is more like a focult's pendulum standing still.

Remember, the Newton's first law. - Every object stays in the constant state of rest or of uniform motion, unless an external force acts on it... So, in vaccum, the external forces are eliminated and the forces acting on the ball are earth's gravity and earth's angular rotation force. These two forces will lead the ball to the center point.

Nevertheless, you would not get too far with this concept and it may not be appropriate to travel long distances. But is a very nice topic though.

That is yet another interesting question...

 :bow:.....time is compartmentalization of universal events happening around us.

If no day and night then we will use some different reference  :thumbsup:......like...........!!!!!!any thoughts............. :headscratch: :headscratch:

If we are really going to discuss time, then this thread can get very messy  :P (:|~
