Hello everyone, i know this topic is off the subject of this forum but needed some help regarding my FY project.
I'm planning to connect vfd to air compressor of regular window a/c. has anyone tried this.?
any1 can give me brief knowledge about it should start with specification for the same.?
Wont you need a inverter (DC BLDC) compressor for it?
Compressor of regular window AC's can only run at a constant speed.
You can play with frequency on BLDC motors to control its speed but i think (I might not be 100% correct here) with regular AC (Current) compressors you only can play with voltage which is not the best option for such voltage sensitive equipment.
Correct me if I am wrong.
Thanx for your reply sir, I have no knowledge about this hence can't correct you.. Hoping for some good response ... :)
Do you get vfd for single phase motors ??
I have only seen for three phase motors till now.
I am sure that you can fit VFD - but what will be the
advantage ?? Compressors are typically designed to run
at a constant (optimum ) speed. Variation from the designed
speed by more than about 10% will seriously affect efficiency
and negate any power savings you might expect by running
at reduced speed.
The above is my view based on pratical use of vfd on axial fans typically 5 - 25 hp.
I am not an elect engg. so might be totally wrong
Actually I'm only trying to make window ac test rig ... Where in will change some parameters like compressor rpm and see the out put readings like temperature based on that will calculate and see the efficiency and power consumed for same ....
First of all , I think i should correct you..
Actually compressor used in Window ac is not air compressor , it is refrigerant compressor .
ok.. ty any idea on connecting vfd to single phase motor.? small compressor unit ha single phase motors

I believe that's not going to happen since Compressors already run at optimum speeds at 220volts/50hz

Yes, you can. But for that you would need a compressor from an Inverter Air Conditioner which already works through VFD (DC current) in stock setup.
Google 'Inverter Compressor'
The vfd's i have dealt with were used in two systems, central airconditioning air-blowers and another in lift/elevator systems. Both were 3 phase ac motors, with single phase motors you will not achieve maximum range of rpm due to torque loss. I think you should central-ac or elevator companies for help and they may be of help to you, am sure mumbai have both of them in plenty..
Well, Otis have an office as well as Test Facility in Kandivali east (near Pujari Compound)
Just 2 mins from Thakur Village.
