WHY U SHOULD NEVER EVER MAKE A ROCKET WITH GUNPOWDER (nearly killed myself)

So friends, I have made model rockets in the past with sugar and the gun powder mix, since i haven't been able to get KNO3 from retailers other than internet. It also works pretty well. But yesterday night (26 may) I made a model rocket engine with pure gun powder as I was experimenting to make an engine similar to the estes engines. But the estes engine rockets had gun powder tightly (machanically) packed inside while i only could pack it with a wooden stick. So i made my rocket engine with a 3/4" pvc tube with a length of about  10 inches I used m-seal to seal the two ends and tightly pack the gun powder and drilled on end to the inside. So I wanted to lauch it today. So my house has a very spacious front , so no fields are required for me. I put the engine on the terrace wall inside another pvc pipe for launching the rocket (which turned out to save my life). After several attemts , I lit the fuse (3:00 pm) What I saw was a great bang, i felt no pain, I touched my face and limbs to reassure myself I was in one piece. I didn't even knew that   I got wounds. I walked into my room, panicked to see my whole face covered in blood. My aunt rushed up the stairs to see me in blood I was rushed to the Medical College. I got 8 cuts and 7 bruises in my legs, two cuts in my arm , One cut in my shoulder , 5 cuts in my face , my left eye got a small scratch in the lower portion (no problem with my eyesight though) and some other minor cuts in my torso. What happened was the hole was too small and the pipe wasn't too strong to bear the pressure of that much gun powder. It is virtually impossible to pack up the gun powder that much without those machines. Now I am in a 5 day rest at home. I was 1.5 mtrs away from the pipe which had the engine, I used the pipe to guide the engine. Which absorbed the impact of most of the shrapnels saving my life. So, if you are making a rocket engine with just gunpowder imitating firecrackers, you may end up bieng dead or surely get injured. ( this doesn't discourage me from doing more experiments though!).

Crazy experience and thanks for sharing it. Please don't try this.

Get well soon buddy. Bring up some crazy experiments but please take safety precautions next time.

I warned you not to use black powder when you contacted me on WhatsApp sometime ago relating to the Kno3 rockets you wanted to make.
Take care in d future.
P.s what happened to your two stage rocket?

vishal

do these experiments but take proper safety .

thanks for sharing

AL HAM SHARI

Never had time to make a two stage rocket. Will think about it in the future. (After all, I cant even ride a bicycle in this condition lol)

Well when I did this kind of stuff...I used a remote to set the fuse...and his myself behind a wall 80-100 meters away...
Once the rocket exploded..and the plant vase thatkept it upright was destroyed...a second later i heard glass shrapnel hitting the wall I was hiding behind.😂😂😂
Yea never tried it again.
Get well buddy...
And glad u didn't lose your eyesight...that's like the worst thing that can happen other than dying.....Keep safe

Even I use a remote fuse to ignite the rocket or any other experiment from a very long distance. For close observation I use an old camera

Same here. I used to stay at least 15 meters back with protective equipment. I made use of electric matches

I didn't get the gunpowder from a retailer. I got it from a local pyrotechnician who makes fireworks for festivals for free.

Hello Al Ham Shahri,

About 3 or so years ago, when I was in school, I too built a huge h-class rocket motor with KNO3. The first attempt resulted in an explosion as the aluminum casing was not able to handle the heat and pressure and melted. We tried it another time with a different alloy of aluminum and it seemed to work and lift the rocket about 400m (according to the recovered altimeter) before that also melted and blew the nozzle out. I would suggest you get in contact with any educational institution and request them to help you acquire some because that route seemed to work for me.

Thanks,
Sahevaan

Here there are no educational institution which support an average guy unless he is deaf or a son of an MLA or unless he has support from media.

Whoa Bud... You had a narrow escape!
Glad you made it alive.
I think you didnt provide a proper exhaust opening, as the pipe seemed to blow up, recalling on your accounts.

I shall take your advice...

Exactly, after visiting their website myself , I found it unbelievable for Indians who are living the real life for Elon Musk or Stark Industries. Its really great for us to have companies like this!
