This will be my first entry for 6th sweepstakes.
This is my first build log.
1st day I was only able to spend only 1 hour today so finished cutting the rib set.

Good job on properly documenting the build with date references :thumbsup:

Should be fantastic! Could you post some specs - span, length, expected AUW, Power Plant etc?
@Anwar @sundaram @rcpilotacro @sanjai rai - Thanks you sir
specs
span - 35.6 inch
length - 28.5 inch
AUW - 700 to 800g approx
Havent decided the powerplant yet confused between glow or electric.
If glow cox TD 049
If electric then equivalent motor.
would decide later.
@ 800 grams, or 2 lbs, as a low wing war model, this would need upward of 250 Watts by my reckoning. The Cox will give you far less power.
@ sanjai rai sir this is the specs given in plan
Todays progress

postively looking for final product/ mustang

Wing completed
@jana.f22
Looks great {:)}
In the left wing centre section sheeting is that an ink line or a joint?
A joint is not desirable.
Do you have a TD .049 or .051?
On 25% or so nitro, the will be perhaps twice as powerful as a BabeBee.
Ask Sundaram sir.
BTW, what is the source of the plan? How old?
By current standards 7-800gms for a 36" span is quite high.
My 36" depron Spitfire was 330gms, and had out of sight vertical with a 200watt motor producing 660gms thrust on a 9x5 prop.
Best wishes.
@ kk Iyer its a joint sir.
I have TD .049
The plan is from outerzone its rcm plan.
http://www.outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=5130
Yes its quite heavy for this size but My friend made a P51D marutaka plan same 36inch it weights around 900g and it powered by electric still performance is flawless, so ill go with electric most probably.
thats a really fast build..... great going
@shobit17 thank you sir am planning to finish and maiden this by this week
Todays progress
Ailerons cut, torque rod installed for ailerons, aileron servo installed & undercarriage installed.
jana, the build is coming up very well.
Are those hardwood blocks for the l/g under the wings
Best wishes...... you may like to take notice of the advice given by Mr Iyer..... the joint is not desirable at the place he is talking of..... because it is a place where a lot of weight gets centered due to higher wing loading in turns. You may like to give a reinforcement by using a thin nylon cloth pasted there with Epozy.... some 3 inch wide piece of cloth would be fine. Nest time do avoid such a joint.
@girishagarwal Yes its a hard wood block.
@shohit17 sir ill be sticking a fiber glass cloth with epoxy over the entire mid section for strength for reinforcement.
Coming along nicely :thumbsup:
Glad you are going electric
(:|~ {:)} :bow:
Wow...Great going jana Ji....
Best of luck. I didnt noticed its yours.
Ashok.P
@ Ashok ji thanks, anyway you will be there during my maiden.
@ Darshan thank you
wings completed just have to do covering work.
fuse work started.
Seems like im getting the balsa fever.
Ashok.P
WOW!
no need to add weight by sticking the clot and epoxy on the entire length. The model is small and not much of wing loading is expected ... even in tight high G turns manouveors it is not likely to breat the balsa sheeting.... the curved balsa sheeting is very very strong and takes the load. A true semi monocoque structure.
Yesterdays progress(18.6.2015) posting it now
Completed some fuse work
Woooh! This is one pretty pretty bird! {:)}
@Jana.f22,
Beautiful!
Hope you have matching canopy an spinner...
Inspiring build {:)}
Never built a balsa wing till now. Feel like building one after seeing this build thread.
Super.. Super
Hope you plan to dope the entire Balsa after the construction is over and before the wings are covered. Do not forget to do the dope as it will give it strength which u will need and also a smooth finish to the wood parts. More so the structure will be somewhat waterproof.
Nice build
@shobhit17 sir, a real old timer is one who has dope, haha. Where can one still get it? Need some as want to tissue cover a wing.
@jana.f22
Switched from dope (after IHC) to NC Clear (smells and works the same).
Don't know if even that is available any more.
But for wood you can use Asian Touchwood or Nerolac Wonderwood PU.
Remember to put on a super finish. Don't rush it.
For dope I use Clear Lacquer
For wood finishing I use Sanding Sealer

Well Dope is actually a Nitro Cellulose (NC) based paint. Go to any good paint shop and you will have to ask for NC Paint in clear colour. The same paint used by Car painters which dries in a few minutes. You will need to add NC bansed thinner about 50% to the paint by volume to thin it to your requirements.
For filler I take some Chalk power and pour some of this thinned paint into it and make a paste. It dries in a few minutes enough for you to sand the extra one off. Alternatively you may use any Wall Putty and use it as a filler. Once sanded well... just apply the dope and let it dry... use a "WELL USED" sandpaper of 120 or more grit to sand the painted surface lightly for a shiny smooth finish. Even if it does not shine its OK.
I knew this was comming and waiting for it.... ha ha ha... to many people getting cought in the DOPE... ha ha
KK Sir... you can use this Clear NC paint or the clear laquer on the tissue paper covering very well.....
@shobhit, kk Iyer, sanjai rai sir: am using balsa filler that i got tower hobbies and using 120 grid for sanding.
Todays progress
Almost completed the fuse top block and made a hatch in the front for accessing the electronics which was not in plan, only canopy left that i have to figure it out. the shape has comeout as expected.
Started covering the wing
following the red tail scheme
@jana.f22,
Wait, wait!
Before covering the other wing, please take a long sanding block and sand the wing surface smooth.
Start with about 150 grit, finish with the finest you have (300-600).
Don't let the surface irregularities, joint lines etc to show through the covering.
Colour scheme choice is excellent! (Should the star point the other way?)
@kk Iyer I didnt see ur post, covered the other half sir. I sanded the entire wing with 120 grid. Next time ill improvise sir.
source of silver paper sheet and sticker of star with circle

kindly give ur phone no.

sir the silver covering is available in radical rc, hobbyking. the stickering i got it locally from sticker shop. i have pm ed my.mobile no.
Well Jana.... one more caution.... if you had brushed the entire wood surface with "DOPE" i.e. the NC Clear laquer..... and then used the 120 grit sand paper to finish it smooth..... the wing and the other surfaces (whereever the wood is) would have been smooth and laquer finished. If the surfaces are small I simply use QUICKFIX on the wood and spread it all over with my fingers and then let it dry. This way not only you get an excelent finish on the wood surface (even what goes under the covering) it gived the wood more strength and a great surface for the paper to stick better.
Just try it and remember it next time.
Way to go - Jana! Looking goood!
@shobith sir : points noted sir, will try this next time.
Following you build since the start, coming out really nice. I am too fancying towards a balsa build, maybe it is time for me to fetch balsa :) All the best :thumbsup:
Best of luck for the final finish....

Both of you have the same radio and plane! Lol.
Very nice {:)} {:)}
Vouch for the model and the flying. Flying a 40 size model was a challenge and the tiny Mustang was committing aviation :) :thumbsup:
Thank you sanjai rai sir, thank you captain.
@jana.f22,
First class. {:)}
Quite fast, isn't it?
So finally what did you use for power?
@kk iyer sir I used elecric motor emax budget 2215 1200kv. The model.flies easily at 20% throttle.
Lovely nice flight..... Best Wishes
thank you sir
Very nice Jana, great work.
What was your AUW, and which battery/prop did you use
@sanjairai sir Auw-650g 3s 11.1v 1000mah battery, 10*7 prop
