Hello Guys,
Been away from this forum for a while.
I wanted to make myself an aileron trainer and so decided to make a spad called "Saturday Night special".
Plans could be found here:
http://spadtothebone.net/freeplans.htm
(Look under free plans->classics->.40 size)
Started making the plane according to the plan and soon finished it During the test flight, we found that the distance between the trailing edge of wing and the leading edge of horizontal stabilizer was too less. Also the horizontal stabilizer area was too less to make the plane stable enough for me.
So made the following changes to the original plan:
1. Increased the fuse length to 42 inches from 30 inches.
2. Increased the horizontal stabilizer area. (From 14x7, increased to 22x8 (i think ?,will confirm or post drawings later). This includes elevator area also). Elevator is 22x3.
3. Increased Vertical stabilizer area from 7x7 to 10x8. This includes rudder area also. Rudder is 8x3.
I will give drawings a bit later. so above changed dimensions would be more clear.
Motor used was Turnigy 2217

ESC was Mystery 30 Amp..i think this one
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=9483
Prop used was 10x4.7
Battery was Turnigy 2200mAh.
3x 9grams Hextronic Servos
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__662__HXT900_9g_1_6kg_12sec_Micro_Servo.html
2mm Carbon fiber rods as pushrods
60cm servo extention leads
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=9687
Chopsticks as dowels, Large rubber bands or Cycle valve tube to hold wing to the fuse, Ply motor mount, colored tape, carbon fibre rods as reinforcements for all surfaces, lipin/lupin patti (whatever its called) as spar.
After the changes were made, it flew wonderfully stable. I got myself a relaxed aileron trainer. The only change i had to make after this flight was to add another set of washers to give a little down thrust.
This is the first time i made anything in coro. I am a beginner model maker too.
This bird flew nicely. Its a huge one!
Please let me know if i missed out something or if anyone requires any more info. Will gladly share whatever little i know.
Cheers!
{:)} {:)} Congratulations!
Looking forward to the Video and the Plans
Great show, keep Spadding!
Some pics
pics show motor mount and servo positions
nice and clean build,
what is the AUW ?
AUW is close to about 800 gms
wingspan is 48 inches
chord is 12.5 inches
fuse length is 42 inches
The modifications to the original plans were done using the attached design ratios (Approximately).
(made by Gene Bond)
This was the original plan to which modifications were made using the above design ratios.
Instead of pvc pipe coro fuse was done.
Great build. did you use formers within the coro for support. are you sure the all up weight is only 800 g. ussualy 40 size trainers weigh around 2500g and coro builds are heavy rather than light. Nice bird

Avijit

Thanks to Ankur Kaul for capturing and making this video
The photographs looks grate. And the plane too.
Just use Aluminum rod (3mm-5mm dia) Flattened both end and screwed with elevator and rudder to keep 90O always. Not mandetary, but as you have enlarge Elevator/Stabilizer area (Length).
Great spad bakya...
Mod - My post count doesn't increase :giggle: this has happened earlier as well..

Hmmm. It should. You are 826 now. Post once more and we will see !
nice plane bakya..and nice flying..i should put up the pic of your passenger here as well
Great build and maiden Bakya. Pleasure to watch in flight; seems very stable
Have been thinking of building a SN Special for nearly 3 years - you have given me the incentive! I'm building a J3 Balsa Cub now, after that I'm going for this! I would however be adding a landing gear too, and as the only motor I have is a 3536 (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=18229) I plan on using that
Any suggestions will be most welcome
Regards
Sanjay
Bakya
Could you help with the following dimensions:
1. Width of aileron
2. Is the 12.5" chord inclusive of Aileron?
3. Corro thickness used
4. Distance from front tip of fuse to LE of Wing
5. Cross section size of Fuse (e.g. 2.5" square)
Thanks
Sanjay
Bump
