Subbu Its really great, keep it up. Me too planning a BIG guy for my next project, but I think I go for Airbus 380 or that sort.

But subbu, loose so much weight for some big things like this. Dont use hotglue too much, you cant sand it later and it weighs too much. Go for fevicol SH like white glue instead. It takes time to set but will be very light. You need clips while letting it to set.

Thats for now, CANT WAIT TO SEE IT FLYING!

finally my boeing 747 took to the air it was the primary cg and level flight test for a record 12 to 15 seconds.

gaurav bhaiya's airbus 318 also flew beautifully

before the launch the landing gear came off and hence was hand launched. also the plane was tail heavy but the downthrust of edf made the mammoth stable. and would you beleive it it needed no trimming on the control surfaces

for me and gaurav bhaiya the flight was an entry into airliners.

todays takeoff setup

2 70 mm ducted fans at full throttle

flaps 30 degrees

2200 mah battery

and rds 8000

and the servos mentioned previously

now alright you guys are hungry for video and pics

and the good thing is that the video and photo's were taken

but it will take till today evening as gaurav bhaiya shot it and has to send it to me

now that the model has proved its airworthiness the model is being rebuilt to get a lighter model made of lighter materials.

todays flight's description

gaurav bhaiya did a running throw and the plane took off and i kept it level though it was descending as the plane was massively underpowered. after flying for approximately 10 feet i gave in elevator input and the plane ascended and due to the underpowered set up (due to just 2 ducted fans actual one has four) the plane stalled in mid air and landed safely with a bit of chipped depron in the nose area  -  so it is reasonable to expect the less power and all you guys were right the model was over 2 kg possibly my hot glueing habbit added a few hundred grams.

now just disassembling each section to be rebuilt lighter in weight using balsa and carbon and also a proper landing gear

anyway this models first flight gave me enough confidence that the prototype -2 (or the final one) will fly .

subbu

ps

we had the ex 747 pilot uncle too at the field

and a very very uneventful event which if disclosed could put my future planes in danger as

the person has told me that i post that pic he will shoot down every plane i fly

expect the video by 7 or 8  pm depending on when gaurav bhaiya sends them to me

These EDFs X 2 provide 1.7 KG of thrust. Wasnt it not enough for 2kg plane? I still doubt. What battery did u use? 2200 X1 or 2200 X 2?

coz 2200 X 20C = 44 amps. 2 EDFs = 70+ amps. Hope battery not a bottle neck.  :headscratch: If you used 1 battery then you are not getting even 1kg thrust.

anwar

The efficiency of EDFs would be well affected if there is not enough a duct.

Pikle6

the ducting was enough anwar bhaiya also i had the intake rings too

and hey vinay bhaiya yes i used one 2650 mah 30c discharge  battery and possibly i got close to 1.4 or 1.5 kg of thrust or more

(sorry i will change the first post as i forgot that it was a 2650 30c and battery not my slowsticks 2200 mAh 30c battery)

as my models weight was over 2kg possibly over 2.5 as i had used nearly 500 gm of hot glue and since then i have ditched my glue gun and bought a ton of 5 min epoxy

any more questions feel free to ask

Wow.. Ur airliner has come out quite well from all the pics u've put up.. I wish i could come see it in person  :(   Maybe when i come up to Mumbai i can see u guys in action (n finally get to see what depron feels like.. never seen or touched depron.. ever!).. Nothin goin on down here in Goa..

That teaser was AWESOME! Well done Pickle! It must be a great feeling to have accomplished what you did. {:)}

Great to see it fly !

But as we had suspected, it seems to have turned out to be underpowered ?

{:)} {:)} Looks like underpowered by 30% atleast. Another ducted fan and it would have flown well.

medicineman1987

Woah! Really nice subbu  {:)}
The landing looked quite hard.. Did it sustain any damage?

no as i said only the nose area depron was squished a bit

Oops.. Forgot about that :-)

So when r u putting the other 2 EDFs in? And do you have separate ailerons and flaps or have u mixed in the flaps?

Keep up the good work man.. u rock  :salute:

actually the other two ducts are coming from hc and am waiting for them

and yes for such a big size plane we always prefer different flaps and ailerons

on many trainer planes the above flaperon set up would work but for commercial airliner the flaps being seperate are very important

as their positions are different and worl too

if you go in and use the change of pressure caused by them over the wing and also if you try applying the lift formula you will find out the reason of them being far away from each other

oh how i know it is

the neighbour pilot uncle taught me about the lift formula and all about it

we all know about lift thrust weight and drag

but he also taught me the role of  the 2 couples acting on the plane that is lift wight ,thrust drag couples

subbu

ps

he also taught me why the control surfaces fluterred

dear subbu,
very nice to see this flying. My admiration and appreciation for the pains taking detailed work that you have done for this project.
congratulations and all the very best

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lift_%28force%29 read through this completely

i could not find anything better

the formula of lift coefficient is at the end

anyways you cannot get better detailed knowledge than a pilot with more than 30 years of flying experience   ;D ;D ;D

where did you get  the plan from? i plan to construct something like this... i will learn from your mistakes... and what is the range?

you can even use an onboard camera...if there is room for one

Subbu,

I really missed out on this thread.....

Its a lovely build and I can imagine the hard work that has gone in. I love scratch building and am always eager to see the work of others as well. This one is a real beauty.

Good work. Keep it up.

hi topalle as spitfire has answered the first part of your query i shall begin with the next part.

my cardinal mistakes were namely two

Underpowered aircraft - partly due to a heavier (than anticipated) aircraft and partly due to the absence of the other two EDF's

Landing gears - though this plane glides really well landing gears would have enabled be to climb out at a more faster speed helping me avoid the mild stall as seen in the above video.

there is enough room to mount literally anything inside the 747. but the sheer size of the beauty made us forget all about on board camera's or any other additions onto the aircraft. but as i said with enough power you may even mount a dslr into the aircraft (that might just be overkill).  ;)

thank you for the kind words pankaj

THANK YOU... one more query that how could you connect  the various levels of the plane...how could you bend the foam into the round shape???
