This is awesome for electrics

The take off was typically electric burst of power , smooth short run and up she went 8).
I guess such a large electric will cost a packet to operate and build but anyway great stuff
Nice Built. One Q .........
Can we built a plane which can take a pay load of an average human weight acting as a pilot of the plane sitting inside the cockpit along with his Futaba tx and operating the plane, take off and landing too......... ;D ;D ?

Yes why not {:)} also i thing we have gone much far ahead with passenger planes they have auto pilots LOL ;D

In fact, before I decided on the Gas engine for my 50cc, I had this plan of electrifying it!! But then I gave up the idea once I checked the pricing of the battery packs alone! I would need 2 sets of 12s packs!! That is 4 6s packs!! Not to mention a motor and ESC that would also cost a bomb!!
Smaller planes are more economical with electric setups and bigger planes are better off with glow / gas!!

Chan ,
Dug up a motor that is an Eq of 45 CC does not seem to cost the sky

Here is a bigger one :
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=5139&Product_Name=Turnigy_80-100-A_180Kv_Brushless_Outrunner_(eq:_70-55)
ESC and battery cost added should reasonable in comparison to a 50 CC set up.
Sai
@Sai,
the motor cost US$150 i think the most costliest part is the battery which it self will cost a bomb of over US$ 200/- and the ESC another US$ 120 +. So then the cost is already US$470(Rs. 23000/- approx) + freight & custom duties and need to have a spare battery. Whereas a 50cc engine only cost Rs. 18000/- here in india.
@chan
you are correct with ur calculations gas is the way to go and also the sound.
Its only the chinese BL motors that are this cheap. Other branded motors for this size plane would be around $800+ very easily. Like this one perhaps http://www.hobby-lobby.com/axi_gold_5330_20_double_outrunner_motor_3048_prd1.htm :o

@ Katty ,
When you add battery cost then you also have to consider around 1.5 years + of fuel and oil cost as well .
What you have done is a very common error most people do when they talk against electrics ie the battery cost is added to the set up but the long term fuel cost is not considered ,
BTW the battery is fuel.
What i am saying is compare it apple to apple .
Yes electric is more expensive from the initial investment point of view but it is like paying fuel cost in advance . Add also the cost of lack of maintenance to the airframe due to vibrations and look at the long term picture .
Thanks in any case as you have got me thinking of being one of the first few in India thinking of a Giant scale electric .
@ TG :
Here is a link to threads of Giant electrics on RCG

This thread is interesting as well :

See the variety of planes converted to electric and many you would notice use such motor like the Turnigy. Check this thread out :

These set ups are " Chinese Motors " used in the west on Giant Size planes .
I have used the Chinese RCFORALL DY Set ups on my PT 60 , Tiger 60 ,Imagine 50 and a friends Hobbico Hobbistar 60 and Alfa trainner of hanger 9 60 size and have had no issues in the past 2.5 years of electric flying .
I am not saying that such a conversion is going to be cheap , yes it is going to be costly but hey that is the fun of it . It is true that as the size increases electrical set ups are no longer cheaper options like in the case of smaller planes .
In fact they become equally costly right from 40 size UP.
There are too many who have built gassers .I know of possibly half a dozen in Chennai alone majority being YAK's and possibly another half a dozen considering the same tooooooooo run of the mill .
There is nothing challenging in it everyone knows the exact list of components to be bought a gasser yak hardly needs any assembly in any case ( as I understood from Chan ) . You cant go wrong with the CG in the case of an ARF. For the engine mount use the same template some one else has used before . It is just a question of assembly with a few small minor technical challenges the rest is just being able to afford it and time to build it ;D. So in terms of challenge it is more a question for flying than building .
I believe that aero modeling is as much about building as well.
In the case of a Giant scale electric conversion getting the power set up first time right is going to be critical as was the case when I converted my PT 60 about 2 1/2 years back , thanks to the net there is a lot of advice available on RCG for that .
I strongly believe in the saying :
" don't follow the used path , create a trail for others to follow " ;) ;D ;D
Count me in as one who is likely to be one of the few in India to go electric on a large gasser , not in the near future but surely along the way.
sai
PS. : Would not mind looking at a used second hand air frame in about a month or two , I am going to go economical on this build to see how cheap it can get including servos etc . I dont have to spend on the ESC I already have a 120 amp ESC
@ Sai,
what you say is true on the fuel part, but i would also like you to take into calculation the cost charging batteries also as electricity does not come free.
Regarding fuel cost for about 1 litre of petrol is Rs. 50/- + oil of about Rs. 20/- and it should last you about 3 to 4 tanks thats a good 2hrs to 3 hrs of flying time.
looking forward to seeing with an electric 50cc or 30% scale flown & owned by you soon do post your pics soon.
I just love the noise of the gas or nitro engine.

8) I can create my own trail and don't have to hurry ;) ;D ;D

May be not so Giant but interesting especially the budget :

That "sounds" interesting ! . I am curious to know how the electric big motor will sound .. would definitely miss the mighty roar of the 50CC . But nevertheless, this would be such a great attempt to go off the beaten track.
Good luck Sai, and i would be keenly watching your progress, whenever you start with this project. !

That is the beauty of electrics , I can have planes from 30 gms till ......
sai
So uncle... Now we would have an electric giant in the field soon ;)!! I would also be interested in seeing how cost effective the build can be made!! like using Power HD servos and Turnigy motors plus Zippy / DY battery packs.. I think this can be made as cost effective as a regular 50cc gas plane using high funda equipment!! Let me also see if I can work out the costs side by side.. People can get a clear picture on the difference between both!!
And the build is definitely easy.. The difficult part is taking care of vibration dampening and strengthening the weaker portions of the fuse!! And I would definitely be incorporating the different tips and techniques I learnt from various other build threads!! All this info would be present in my Getting into Gassers thread..
Electric or Gas, the fun depends on the individual and I am a lucky guy because I enjoy both!!

Chan ,
Know some one willing to sell a used airframe preferably anything other than a YAK ;D
sai
Would definitely let you know if I come across anything.. I am sure I can locate some new airframes in Chennai if you are interested and also some used airframes but the used ones are mostly scale flyers and not aerobatic.. Let me know if you are interested and I might take a peek into some hangars in Chennai :D!!
- Chan
Not in a hurry , a few months time .dont mind if the owner of the airframe is willing to wait ;) ;D
Sure.. I think you might land up with a slightly used YAK (well maintained).. pics posted today in the Getting into Gassers thread by user chanvivek :D :D :D as he might be upgrading to a Composite Model in a few months time :) :)!!
- Chan
No No its a YAK ;) ;D ;D ;D
I am more interested in a 26 cc type frame Looking at Katana , Funtana , AJ Slick something like that
The problem is getting myself a Composite frame right away!! But another thing is, I want to learn the behavior of huge models on a balsa plane as it is easier to repair in case of any mishap!! Lets see how things go!!

Chan ,
Looking at going this way :
