Blu Baby 33 inch using Monobloc

Hi Guys,

This is my first ever scratch built in this wonderful hobby!   :)

Its a Blubaby 33 inch.

I followed this thread for the plan

I have used:

Hextronik 24grams 1300kv outrunner
8x4 gws prop
9 gm servos
1000mAH 3S Rhino
Mystery 12A ESC
Orange 6 Ch receiver for Spektrum
2mm Carbon fiber rods
60mm wheels and 25mm tail wheel
Colored packing tape for decals.

Wing is undercambered using heat forming technique. I have used electric heating pad of my grandma for that purpose :P

Havent maidened it yet, but hope to do it this weekend  :thumbsup:

I did some test runs (not flying, just taxing) at my house!

Lets see how she flies!! Will update this thread, whatever the result.

Flew my Blubaby this weekend!
The first flight was good , not great...needed adjustments to the UC wing, added expos, reduced throws.
After the adjustments, it flew nicely  :thumbsup:
Flew it for about 15 mins.

Will let you guys know more about it after i fly it some more...currently doing some corrections to the wing  :thumbsup:

looks a neat setup buddy, btw how much time u get on that 1000mAH 3S Rhino with this setup, (i guess u using spectrum Tx)?

2400-2500mAH will be good for 30 - 40 mins... correct me if i'm wrong :)

That will be too heavy for this plane, you'll have to use more throttle which will drain the battery faster. Its better to get two 1000mAh instead and use one after another.

There is no hard and fast rule how much flight time you will get. It depends on the plane and how you handle it. Only thing you can get theoretically  is that for the max-amp drawn how much time would the battery last given the discharge rate.

i guess thats a better idea,

and btw i'm leaning towards 42" model of it.
for that, i guess i need a bigger prop, and bit bigger throttle motor for more thrust.
the same ESC will work i guess,
please shed some light on that :)

No, you've got it all wrong. That is a harness for connecting two batteries in parallel. i meant connect one 1000mAh battery to the plane at a time and when its drained take it out and connect the other one.

Hi there,

    I was also planning to scratch build my first foamie (which would be in the range of 24" to 33" span).
    I plan to use the following configuration:

ESC:       Hobbyking SS Series 15-18A ESC
LiPo:       Turnigy nano-tech 1300mah 2S 25~50C Lipo Pack
Motor:    Turnigy 2730 Brushless Motor 1300kv
Props:    9 x 4.7
Servos:   HXT900 9g / 1.6kg / .12sec Micro Servo

    Could you please let me know if this is a reasonable/workable configuration?
    I am planning for an AUW of 350-400gms (tops).

    Also, the ESC that I had planned for has a 1Amp BEC, but I read somewhere that the Hextronix Servos seem to draw a lot of current. Do you think I need to go for an ESC with higher BEC current?
    I plan to use 2-3 Servos (4-Ch setup).

So after flying it for some time, we reduced the throws to about 60% and set expos to about 50% (negative side). The biggest mistake i did was that i dint reinforce the wing. I know it was a stupid thing to do. But the fiber reinforced tape had made the wing so stiff that i thought maybe i can escape the need for any more reinforcement.
I flew good 20 mins without any problems but during a sharp turn at a great height, the wing cracked. The fuse came down spinning to the ground. But there was absolutely no damage to the fuse. I also repaired the wing but dint find it tough enough to fly with it again.
So, i started cutting foam again and made a new wing. This time i paid a lot of attention in getting the 4-40 undercamber correct (to the best i could). Also the new wing got carbon fiber rods for the leading edge and trailing edge (like in a slowstick, with a dihedral joiner). The wing also got a reinforcement with dihedral at 33% on the underside of the wing.
I have also increased the wing span by 3 inches.

The next i am planning to change is the landing gear. I had used cycle spokes (bad choice i know, but had only that at the time) earlier. Now thanks to Vector (Amar), i will be using spring steel to make the landing gear. The front wheels will be 60mm and the rear wheel will be 25mm.

I am also planning to put carbon fiber rods on the vertical stab and horizontal stab as well.

After i test this wing, i am planning to make a sports wing for the same fuse which will be KFm3 with ailerons. I may have to make an adapter for UC wing, since the wing mounting on the fuse will be flat in that case.

But this is in near future. First needs to test my new wing.

Ok, here are the pics of my blubaby with new wing. The new wing is the same under cambered design as per plans but i have increased the span by 3 inches. Carbon fiber rods are provided for reinforcement. This one has a modified landing gear made from spring steel.

Planning to test the new wing tomm.
