Since I have had both, I would any time recommend Easy Star. It's a perfect plane for beginner. Almost impossible to crash. Sky Surfer on other is good too but the flight characteristics are not very predictable. One particular characteristic I feared in it was it's tendency to tip stall if it came under downwind. The same tendency finally crashed it when I was flying it in beach. It was my mistake too as I had dual rate on and when it started coming nose down due to downwind, the elevator throw was insufficient to bring it back up and I didn't have the presence of mind to turn off dual rate. Easy star has fantastic self recovering abilities. This is off course my observation and may differ from other sky surfer owners.

Also, there are little modifications you need to do on a sky surfer sky like air intake scoops for the esc/battery to cool down or you need to mount the esc outside. All these are present in easy star 2. Motor up gradations are also not easily possible as motor is glued to the motor housing. After removing the motor, you then you need to buy or create motor mounts to mount bigger motor. Whereas in easy star, it's easy to upgrade to a bigger motor. Space in fuselage is also little cramped compared to generous space in easy star 2.

Regarding motor, as swizera pointed out, it's very good for a beginner. If you want more power, then I think, the below ones are good bets:

+1 How I forgot about that! The tail can be easily removed in this.

easy star out of stock , i didnt know it will get out of stock so fast. so any other plane suggestion or should i wait for skysurfer and easystar 2

vishalrao

I suggest you wait. Don't hurry as this is your first plane. Both are expected to be stocked soon.

hi vishal,
im a helicopter pilot in the army.I belong to bangalore and am presently stationed in the north east I have always liked the idea of flight and since i fly a rotary wing my interest in fixed wings is what brings me to rc flying as there seems no scope to fly the real stuff!! Im a complete newbie when it comes to rc flying and after browsing the site for a while i figured on zeroing onto either an easystar or a skysurfer. ive been reading your posts and  since you have owned both i wanted your valued opinion. my budget is upto 10000(max!) and wanted ur advice on the best way to make the most of it. as i completely at sea regarding the parts, would you kindly give me a breakdown of the parts and the sites to buy them from. I found a RTF on this site http://www.rcbazaar.com/products/1301-sky-surfer-ready-to-fly-with-transmitter-lipo-charger.aspx . good deal or do you recomend another combo? whats your take on the axn floater? thanks and god bless!!

it is good deal, i have bought quite a bit of these RTFs for my pupils, (Last one arrived yesterday) there is no RTF as cheap as this one in indian market presently.

Dear bentom_1 ,

The deal is indeed very tempting but my preference is Easy Star. However, it goes beyond your budget as from the calculation below.

RC Dhamaka
------------

1. Easy Star II - Rs. 5300 (including tax and shipping I had paid. In your case, shipping will be slightly more.)
2. EMAX BL2210/25 Easy Star Motor- 1,047 (including shipping and tax. If you order together, you can club this with Easy Star shipping. I had ordered separately and hence extra shipping)

Total: Rs. 6347.

HobbyKing.com
--------------

1. Turnigy 3S 2200 MAH - $7.89
2. Turnigy-3S - Turnigy balancer & Charger 2S-3S - $4.49
3. HobbyKing Red Brick 30A ESC - $7.68
4. HXT900 - HXT900 9g / 1.6kg / .12sec Micro Servo (4 no.)- $10.76

Shipping: $9.99
Total: $40.82

@ exchange rate of Rs. 55 = Rs. 2245.

RcBazaar.com
-------------

1. FS-CT6B 6ch 2.4GHz transmitter & receiver - Rs. 2190.
2. Futaba Y connectors 45 cm - 32AWG - Rs. 30.

Shipping: I don't expect it to be less than Rs. 700 (I have found their shipping charge always on the higher side)

Total: Rs. 2920.

Grand total: 6347 + 2245 + 2920 = Rs. 11512.

Before you buy the RTF kit, enquire about the shipping first. I had ordered a F22 Raptor kit + a 5S 2200 MAH battery from them and the shipping came to Rs. 1326. So if the shipping is too much, then you can consider my option, stretching your budget by about Rs. 1000.

Regarding AXN floater, I really haven't seen the plane so can't give a concrete review. I have however read that the space in the fuselage is very less and accommodating the electronics inside can get quite difficult. Here's one review I found on this forum.

Why I prefer EasyStar: Apart from the reasons mentioned in above posts, I have found Easy Star more stable and forgiving compared to Sky Surfer. I may be completely wrong considering my meager flying experience and Augustine sir would be the best person to comment on this.

Sky Surfer....Easystar, ..., though they look, feel, weigh the same one is an ambassador and the other Lamborghini.

One drawback of easystar 2 (not present in EasyStar1/SkySurfer.) is that there is too much rudder induced roll, which is not good in an model with ailerons IMO. SkySurfer will always thermal better than easystar2.

rcpilotacro

Amit
it will be there, because easystar-i was designed roll with rudder,  in a real life and in a RC aeroplane, rudders are used to balance a turn and not to turn the aeroplane (Except in 3d and direction control in a pattern), however, yeah undesirable yaw induced roll could be detrimental

Totally agree with Gusty sir. People sometimes use both Rudder and Ailerons for a Roll-Turn.. which is not a good thing for gliders like Easy Star/Sky Surfer. Use the rudder only for Yaw, when you are aligning your plane for landing or otherwise in the sortie. Using a Ail-Rudder mix is not a good thing with this plane.
Look it from other point - Easy Star II has a  good Rudder authority (I used to teach people on Easy Start - I with Rudder swapped to Aileron channel), along with a responsive Aileron. But this plane is not a Hotliner/Pylon Racer or any Acrobat. Sky Surfer would be a a middle path between a pure glider/Soarer , but never a better 'Beginner' plane than Easy Start II.

I agree. But I belive contenders for best beginner planes are in this order; EasyStar1 > EasyStar2 > SkySurfer.

ps: I had a tough time starting in electrics with easystar1 but thats a different story and was my bad :banghead:

My Verdict

Easy star -II all the way, lot of good features, like

(a)  Elevator and Rudder servo is conveniently located

(b)  Lot of Room for FPV & 5000mah batt

(c)  Engine is located inside a pod opening it and changing motor or do any repair is easy as a breeze

(d)  ESC wire goes through the fuse and the wing in a neat easy to access setup unlike SkySurfer

(e) Folding prop setup using a rubber band is much neater and ensures a fold, all the time.

(f)  foam quality is much better, crash resistance is much much higher

(g)  Tailplane is removable, you can carry the built aeroplane in its own box, very good for carrying an aeroplane out of town, trekking etc

so if you are wanting to spend for a beginer or a basic FPV aeroplane easystar-2 it is
