Electric SPADSTICK Build

Though I did not make the spadstick back in India, its the first thing I did once I reached Jeddah ;) Here is a video of my electric version of SPADSTICK. Since I didn't like the stock tail and square wing, modified both :D Some build pics and video:

How easy is it to fly? Could an absolute beginner make and fly this as a Trainer?

Wing with 2mm Coro or 3mm ?
We have to unite and to prove ourself to make indigenous products as well as marketing / Canvasing them. I'm sure we must achieve success if we try unitedly.

Santhosh Bhai Thanks! The trainer I made that day was having a H stab issue causing pitch probs. That day, it was the maiden and I completed the build early morning. Did not get enough time to check the build. Later I fixed the issues and she flew well and the landings were OK. This is a video of the same bird after fixing the H stab issue

VC, though it floats quite well (I shed a lot of weight), plus not having a dihedral, could be a handful for an absolute beginner. It responds and tracks well, bit touchy compared to a trainer.The stock model weighs 5 1/2 #, mine weighs 4# 4 Oz (just about 1.95 Kg).

Kalyan: 3mm symmetrical wing ( I increased 1/2" cord), V stab is 9" high 11" long with a 5:4 Rudder, H stab is 18" wide with 4" Elevator (both tapered for appeal as well as to reduce flutter). And by the way, I dont use any wooden or PVC formers. The whole fuze is 4mm and all the re-reinforcement is 4mm crisscrossed with only the exception of a lite ply for the motor mount and LG.

Spitfire: Its a HK 50-45 900kv, TGY 80A plush, 4s 3.3Mah and a 11x6 Master Airscrew. At 60% throttle it hangs the plane with ease and a little more it punches out.

Video update on the eSS

And this time, I increased the rudder size even more and it surely is reflecting in the knife-edge performance. I was told by many that its very difficult to get a stick to knife,...took that as a challenge and this time quite happy with the results. Though it requires a bit of elevator coupling to keep it in a straight line, considering that its a scratch built...I can live with that :)

A few things i thought of bringing to your notice,
(a) your Aileron throw is more, you could have some D/R and expo for your aileron
(b) Move the CG slightly more forward, she is a tad tail heavy, thats why at low speeds she is doing that
(c) remember only way to beat the wind is speed, keep the speed high, come closer to the ground , winds die down close to ground due friction, now reduce speed and land

a)I have DR set (not expo as I dont know how to properly set it), and it was on high rates. Kindly advice me if I should shift to Low rates while on low speed moves :help:

b) CG: I have two batteries for her (4s 3.0 and 4s 3.3). While on 3.0, she is tad tail heavy, and while on 3.3 she feels better. Though I have added some lead to the 3.0 battery, still I enjoy a little bit of tail heaviness as it helps me with hovering  ;D 

c)Proper landing is still some thing I need to put some effort to. I always tend to reduce speed while landing especially on windy days or if I am tensed  :banghead: Its about 6 or 7 months into this hobby, I guess I was busy building than flying. Since very recently my planes started coming back home in one piece, I have started putting more attention to flying.

I am very happy that you found time to review my clip and came forward to help  :salute: Will certainly have your advices in mind next time I go to the field...and please please do keep them coming  (:|~

reduce the aileron throw itself, it looks like around 20+ mm to should be around 10-12 mm with atleast 30-40% expo.

I would still suggest to move your CG slightly forward.

Dear Gusty Saab,

Last day tried your suggestions and she behaved a lot better on landings. It proved that you were right and high rates on windy day should not be in my menu yet :( Speedy landing were much smoother compared to my usual landings too. I had roll couple issues with KE while on high rates and switching AIL to low gave me a much more smoother KE.

Built an eSS for a friend :) after a long break from SPAD builing, I built an AVI for him first. Once he was good enough for a sports model built the spadstick. some pics of it after a bit of simple paint work with its new owner. Its a two night's quick build (as usual :D ).

Sanjay bhayya, I saw your spadstick and I have to admit its a beauty  :salute: Mine is different as I modified it for lite 3D. Will post a video soon and you will see what it can do  ;)
