I made a foamie with Corro.
Now I have everyone's attention ;D ;D, here's the build log
Plans are on outerzone.co.uk, supplement here: http://www.outerzone.co.uk/planfile_supplement/1917/article_1917.pdf
Ken Willard was a legendary designer, and I've wanted to build one of his models since a long time.
Designed to run on anything from a 0.10 to a 0.35, for some reason this model reminds me of our very own dear Mr. Iyer :giggle:
I have built a few Depron models from FT designs, successfully but the only foamie I tried (last year) from Stationery Thermocol was a flop - The wings folded up shortly after take-off
I had bought a transformer about a year ago, and it was gathering dust, so I built a Hot Wire Cutter, then since I had it, I decided to use it and build something

Many thanks to Saurabh Rastogi, who gave me some tips, the Nichrome wire and the all-too-valuable spring! He also gave me some HD Foam for the wing (for the fuse, my neighbour bought a new fridge, so I stole some of the packing >:D ) and he generally egged me on to build something
The build is fairly straightforward, I used Fevicol's Fabric Glue, and in a few places 5 minute Epoxy.
I modified the plans to suit the material, and added bits of ply in strategic places

The second wing half came out near perfect; I was thinking of throwing away the first, and making a new one, but the had a what-the-hell moment and decided to use it anyway
Used a 6 mm X 12 mm balsa spar, with 18" of centre section braced by 3 mm ply at the dihedral angle

I don't like this material for control surfaces. So, I put a TE of 10 X 6 balsa, and balsa ailerons covered with monokote
Then I decided it would be far simpler, and no weight issue if I made the tail feathers from Corro, so I did >:D ;D ;D

The fuselage walls are 1" thick! So there is hardly any room inside. Squeezed in a 19 gram metal servo for rudder & Nose Wheel, and a 10 gram MG Servo at the back for the elevator. Used 8.5 gram E-Max servos for ailerons

Rai sahab ..Beautiful as always .... Awaiting maiden
Thanks Doc. It flew very well, with no trimming needed ;D
I first put a 9*4.5 prop, but realised it wasn't enough (The AUW is 1050 grams - I'm using a 3000 mah LiPo)
So on the second sortie I changed to a 9*6 and it was fine. With the 9*4.5 I ws flying at full throttle throughout!
Did 5 sorties, and took a small video too

That was one Super Hot Landing Sir. Impressive. {:)} {:)} {:)}
I was waiting for this for some time now since we had that chat.
Nice as usual. Materials don't matter but the skill in how to use them is what matters.
Great plane sir, I see you couldn't stay away from coro :giggle:

I thought you didn't like this material at all!
hi guys,
logged in to the forum after a long time ( new college)
And to my astonishment I saw sanjay sir building a foamie....
Came out very well sir...
Thanks Colonel, Ashok-ji, Maahin and Topalle
Sir very good.
ahhmmmmm....... no words for this build.
Sir what to say ...... First a corrobalasttic ( coro&balsa) plane now foamcoroastic (foam & Coro) plane.
wondering what's next?
Thanks Nitesh, thanks Saurabh
Superb build sir, as saurabh sir said whats next :)
Thanks Neil.
What next, where next? Quo Vadis?
Frankly, I'm not impressed with foam. It's light, but for the size of models I prefer, it needs a lot of reinforcement. So the final weight is just marginally below Corro or Balsa. The only advantage I see over corro is a wing profile can be made more accurately.
So, maybe a Corro fuse and tail, and foam wing? I don't know right now
Foam would be great for smaller light models. I don't do those, because where I fly it is frequently windy, and I don't see too well nowadays so small does not suit.
Awesome build sir. Wished i could also be there {:)}
Thanks Harshit
Very good build sir :salute: :salute:
Thanks Gaurang
