RE: Mako 3D electric delta model plane; hovering, catch and tail touch, inverted flat spins.... a bag load of fun.


Mike from our club has built this and it is so impressive, 4- 5 others have now copied and built their own versions of Mako.

I have been watching Mike too and requested him for the plans and fancy building it.. Mike has gone one step beyond, he has provided me with detailed instructions too...

Will be uploading them soon... Have a look at the videos and feel free to comment...

I will find out if someone can upload plans for me otherwise I am afraid I will just be able to scan A4 pages and leave them for you to stick them together and trace... I wonder if Mark can help, I will ask him.

Yes, please feel free to share any images of my model / CG sketch to your Rc friends in India. The word.doc of instructions is attached as requested!
Good luck with the build, if you are considering 'sinking' the lipo into the fuselage - I would suggest that you fly the model first to find the best CG position of battery before cutting the aperture.
I say this because I think that my model is a little nose heavy, which I know is always the 'safest' flying trim, but not the best for manoeuvrability!
Hence, that's why I added the comment on my instructions, i.e. note 11) Re-move CG further back for extreme aerobatics, prop hanging, etc!
My model balances exactly as recommended on the plan - but if I made another I would experiment by moving the CG further back, as I have suggested to your.  I could add tail weight but this would make the model heavier, which is not ideal for such a small lightweight models of this type - much better to move the lipo to achieve desired CG! (Incidentally, the flying weight of my model is 400g, about 14 ozs).
As you are aware the model flys great with CG as shown on the plan - but I know that this model is capable of far more, especially after seeing the prop-hanging demo shown on 'U-Tube'.
Whatever type of flying you do, just make and enjoy - after all it's not going to cost you a fortune to build, or a life-time to do so!!!

Has your friend mike shared the plans anywhere ? If not how did you guys copy his plane ?

He borrowed a fellow Rc flyer's Mako and traced the actual plane to build his own. He has given me a copy of those plans.
Can anyone suggest who can upload those plans if I was to post the paper tracing to him. Then we can all share them if they are drawn as tiled plan.

HERE ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS:

'MAKO' 3D DELTA (DEPRON) MODEL AIRCRAFT -

'MAKO' DELTA – 26.5" (673mm) Wingspan x 26" (660mm) Overall Length - Electric Power.

This small electric delta type model uses 'elevon' control, i.e. it requires mixing of elevator and aileron channels to provide pitch and roll control, it also uses a separate rudder channel to control yaw. Finally it uses a motor channel to control speed of electric motor. Hence, a minimum RC system of 4 channels is required!
It is a very simple model to build and capable of virtually any aerobatic manoeuvre, including, 3D stunts, prop hanging, etc. (But are your piloting skills good enough???)

1)   Construction Matl:    Depron: 6mm thick, (Use 3mm thk for trim, as required).


2)   Adhesive:      For Depron: Use UHU por, (polystyrene glue) or Epoxy Resin.


3)   Motor Mount:      Plywood: 55mm dia x 4mm thk min, (I Used: 6mm thk).


4)   Wing Spar:      Aluminium Channel: 6mm x 6mm x 1mm thk x 600mm lg.
(Supplier: B&Q – Supplied in 1 Mtr Lths – Price: £5.10 Each).


5)   Fuselage Stiffeners:   Balsa: 10mm x 10mm triangular section, (not really necessary).


6)   Electric Motor:   A2822-14T, (1450Kv, 150 Watt) Brushless Outrunner Motor.
(Supplier: BRC Hobbies – Code: 409680 – Price: £9.95 Each).


7)   Speed Control:   Brushless, (Basic 20A Minimum ESC, 2A BEC, 2-3S LiPo).
         (Supplier: BRC Hobbies – Code: 400264 – Price: £7.80 Each).

8)   Propeller:      APC-E, (Electric) 7"x 4"SF, (Slow-Fly) C/W Inserts.
(Supplier: BRC Hobbies – Code: 411326 – Price: £1.85 Each).

9)   Servos (3-Off):      EMax  ESO8A, (8.5g, 1.8Kg/cm, 4.8V-6.0V, Nylon Geared).
(Supplier: BRC Hobbies – Code: 406115 – Price: £3.25 Each).

10)   Battery (LiPo):      3S LiPo, 25C Min, (3S, 11.1V, 800mAh Min-1800mAh Max).   
(I Use: Overlander - 3S, 30C, 1300mAh, 68mmx33mmx20mm).
(This Provides: 10 Minute Flight Time, Leaving 20% Capacity).

11)   Centre of Gravity:   C of G position - Measure from rear face of motor mount!
(Use: 6.7/8" (175mm), move further back , (i.e. increase this distance) if you desire extreme aerobatics, prop hanging, etc).

Sir , is the tracing done on a big 1m x 1m tracing paper ? Or done on multiple a4 sized tracing sheets ?

Just in case anyone needs 3d delta wing plans. You can experiment and shape them as done with Mako with bigger control surfaces.

I requested a friend to convert to pdf and this is the reply I received; " Point on copyright is - is the design available freely with the designers consent - if not we should not copy and distribute as its against copyright - "

Thank you B4ggu for those details you have supplied it gets me thinking  :headscratch:.

Been busy this afternoon and drawn it up from some the few images, did some patterns on cardboard and made this.  :thumbsup:

Not been decorated yet, weigh it at 16 oz = 450 grams. The gear consists :-
3 cell 1200 mah,
150 watt motor
small 20 amp ESC,
3 X 9 grams servos,
small 1/2 size RX

Can't wait to put some colour on it, and get so air.

Had a cup of tea then got the glue out  :salute:......few hours later end up with this ...my mako in black epp foam.

The black 'mako' of mine is from some 10mm sliced epp I sliced this afternoon, with a forward spar as well, if I wanted to make it lighter which I think I can do by, playing around with a simpler body should lose 1.5 oz - use carbon spars lose 0.75 oz. The Battery is B4ggu's 2200 mah.
