Whats the point of this thing?? I don't get it.. There's already the chinook which is basically what this thing is but sideways.. There's the osprey which makes much more sense as it takes off vertically and then transforms into a much more efficient aeroplane.. Even a simple coaxial would do the job.. Why is he trying to re-invent the wheel??

I kind of agree here. Surprisingly Discovery channel seems un-informed like 'Aaj-tak' or the video itself is quite dated. The description of this guy for using Gyros is nothing unique!! Just everyone uses them today!
There have been commercially viable Tilt-Rotor planes in the past!  'Much Ado about nothing'

This brings me to another point. My cable guys recently started 'Discovery Turbo', channel mostly dedicated to Cars and in parts Boats/Planes. But I am surprised to see R/C arena totally unrepresented there. There are enough of R/C Events around  the world they can cover, many of such events usually have some 'Cool'/'innovative'  exhibits.

Hey, I just got a Tata Sky HD 2day itself and pretty much watched Discovery Turbo all day.. No R/C stuff but lots of stuff about aeroplanes..

Hey, wasn't Subbu working on a Osprey? He should contact Discovery and tell them he's working on a new and improved version of that guys design :giggle:

Please have a look here it is not exactly a conventional tilt rotor like Osprey it is using a inherent basic behavior of any Gyro to give a turning moment 90 degrees to the direction of tilting force for its Pitch control, Yaw and stability.

Unlike Osprey with its complicated control system, which uses both blade pitch control like a heptr and rotor tilt for its pitch control and yaw control and further employs full tilt of rotor forward after sufficient forward velocity to have lift  of the wings, This aircraft is a simple design which controls both axis of movement by gyroscopic moment of both the counter rotating rotors. Both rotors are not exactly forward tilting like an Osprey but tilt at an angle forward and outward.

By this simple design it is able to achieve a hover with just three simple gyros and two simple mixers without any complicated micro controllers. Towards max payload it is more stable.

I am not much into the technical words, but after looking at the video, I can say that all this guy has done is modded the swash plate assembly....i.e. put a Vertical Swash plate with a horizontal rotor shaft with two rotors on either ends of the shaft.....in a normal Heli, its a Horizontal Swash with a vertical rotor shaft...

Its only a modded heli and I dont know why is Discovery channel so much amused with this modification. A VTOL is a term used for Airplanes, coz it does not require a runway for take-offs, A Heli, even in its simplest form is anyways a VTOL...

They should showcase the "flying witch" instead of this so called VTOL... :giggle:

I think this machine is developed mainly for surveillance purpose, its a Heli version of the UAV, its better due to its hovering capability and ability to carry more load on flight, may be they can put-up surveillance cams or some kind of sensors for geographic studies etc.

The 'Discovery Channel' Logo is to say recent, so it was aired recently only!!
