Hi,
Yesterday i started with my new model, a pylon mount balsa glider, thanks to RCD for the balsa .
I am building this model so that i can fly for more time. Whenever i go flying, half of the time is wasted in fixing the nose motor mount. Whenever i do a crash landing the motor mount has to be repaired ( IT TAKES LOT OF OUR TIME ) and i am not a good flyer, still learning.
I was inspired by "bmblb's" pusher model, whenever he comes to fly on the field, he just flys as he has a pusher model.
I have downloaded a pylon mount model plan and i had started working on it yesterday, finished cutting all the parts & now i am working on the wing first & later i will start with the fuselage.
Fuselage - 36"
Wingspan - 60"
Chord - 8"
Few pics of wing construction.

.
All the best
Nice start..
Would love to see as to where we could fly this big one... ;D
Once this model is done, lets go to Hoskote Drone.
Wow. Whenever you call or post you always have some new build to talk about :D All the best mate. :) Hope to meet soon after my exams.
Hey thanks Rajath, i just finished joining the wings, dint take picture of it, feeling sleepy.
I will post it tomorrow.
See you soon....... :)
Please do take build pics of the mount, i am hooked to this thread. best of luck!!
Wow!!! It looks fantastic. Share the plan Sarad.
BTW, take the Sealing Iron from my house if you need for covering. Your motor etc are also lying back there.

Thanks Ujjwal, i will take it once you are back.
Yesterday i managed to join the center wing. Ujjwal your weighing scale is quite handy.
Few pics attached.
Hey RC, nice to hear about ur new project.. Haven't had much time to come online these days.. When are you coming down to Goa? Best of luck
Thanks Medicineman,
I am coming next month.
Few aileron pics..
I am planning to do this pylon mount for my model, if anybody has any other plan for a pylon mount then please post some pics of the same.
I have got this pics from internet.
Hi RC......very clean cuts !!!
As regards the pylon, I tried it in the previous version of the pusher. Some of my experience are listed below:
1. Despite a pylon mount, I still managed to break a prop. Best to go with a pusher config with a pylon.
2. Factor in ample space for adjusting cg.
3. Ensure 0 degree for thrust line, and then add down thrust.
Couple of pics from my plane for your reference.
Here's another pic of the same wing, minus the pylon. You may be able to see the root of the pylon in the center section of the wing.
You may want to consider a configuration where the wing sits on the pylon rather than the pylon being atop the wing - this would ensure 0 deg thrust line. (of course you will need the down thrust).
Good luck with your build.
Wow.. Thats a neat thermocol wing.. What type of wood are the spars and LE/TE made of?

Thanks "bmblb" for the pics.
Very very neat build. All the very best!
Thanks VC,
The wing is almost completed, little finishing work is left and then covering the wing. i will start with the fuselage tomorrow.
Few pics of tip dihedral.
Hi all,
Wing construction is complete, just finished sanding on the wing, total weight of the wing as off now is 197 grams.
Tomorrow i will start with the fuselage.
Hi RC Dude, Can you please guide me for the tools, cutting techniques etc you used to craft the aerofoil wing shapes from Balsa.
I have a strong desire to build a UAV from Balsa, I have collected the plans etc. But I am a little skeptical about the cutting part.

Hi,
The tools i have used to build this wing is a paper cutter to cut the ribs, sanding paper to sand the ribs, clamp and pins to hold the ribs togather while sanding.
Thanks
Today i started with the fuselage,
Few pics.
Hey, u got another dog??? :)
Hey, ur balsa skills are improving day by day  The wing especially looks great! Maybe its time for me to start with balsa too :)
Few pics of fuselage.
Rudder and elevator sanded and hinged.
cool. when do you plan to maiden that..let me kmow :)

I will call you & let you know when i will maiden this model.
Thanks
Total weight as off now is 455 grams.
That look Beautiful. Keep up the good work. Going to lake bed tomorow? Give me a call if you go. So only the pylon mount left now?
Superb!! mind boggling!! When the forum is in dearth of even plan-scratch builders, you are going the Purist Scratch building!!
Looks like I would get the privilege witnessing the maiden!!
Keep the control surface linkage simple. If possible, (CG adjustment allows) put the servos as close to the tail instead of traditional central tray. Use cycle spokes and not brake wires. Get the spring wire lying at my house.
If CG is right, this bird is 100% sky-bound!!
Kudos!!
Any color scheme in your mind ? Did you get the Black/White covering film from our favorite LHS?
The glider is coming up great!! At this speed i think it will be ready for maiden before next weekend.

Hey Ujjwal Thanks.
Definitely we shall go together for the maiden flight.
Planning for traditional central tray as it is a pylon mount, there might be an issue of CG if i put the servos behind.
Using cycle spokes this time.
I dont have any color scheme in mind, i have bought 2 meter dark blue covering film today from RCD.
Please let me know a color scheme for my model.

keep up the good work and if coming to goa for the fun fly can you get the glider/some more/a plane to fly or for display.
thanx
prateek
Thanks Prateek,
I will try to get one of the model, but the problem is transporting.
Let see i will let you know.
hey very nice model sharad...
when do you find time to make so many models???
when are you going o finish it???
any ideas for the colour scheme??? ;D {:)}  :)

Every day i work on this model for 2-3 hours, planning to finish it this weekend (HOPEFULLY).
Now thats dedication!
I have to finish this model as soon as possible, as there are few unfinished project which i have to complete.
Fixed the elevator & the rudder to the fuselage & also cut slot for the push rods for elevator & rudder.
Great progress Sarad.
From the pic, the leading edge of the vertical fin looks little bent towards the left. Is the problem in the angle of the pic you took ?
What color scheme are you planning ?
I just checked the vertical fin, its straight, i think its the camera angle.
RC.. great build... {:)} all the best for the flight...

I think i will complete the model by next weekend.
Yesterday i painted the model & today will start with the motor mount.
Few pics.
Here are few pics of the pylon mount.
Pylon mount is 6mm ply & base is 2mm lite ply.
Fantabulus Sarad! how you cut the shape so good? Looks real good. But be extra careful while putting the Motor base plate as upto 4-5 degree of shift may go unnoticed with naked eyes. Do lots of Dry fitting before gluing the base. Use some screws as well as I have a bad experience with similar mount.
Cant wait to see the plane get the skin!

Sharad this is awesome..Superb professional work..
Whats the weight now ? Have you decided a motor for it ?
Beautiful man!!

Thanks Medicineman & Atul,
It is little heavier then i thought, the fuselage weight is 310 grams & the wing is 210 grams. Tonight i am planning to cover the wing, i will put the exact weight once the model is ready.
I thing the total weight will be 1000 grams.
I have not decided for a motor yet.
The mount looks awesome. Is it going to be glued to the wing?
1kg is quite heavy for a glider.. I think it'll be slightly under that.. What was ur target AUW?

No, mount will be fixed on the wing with rubber band.

My target was 900 grams with all the electronics, but i think it will 1kg now.
Gr8..Looks like factory built..

With a 60x8 inch wing, 1kg is pretty light IMO.
Cool work...
It will be a bad idea to fix the motor mount with ONLY rubber band. 1 kg as of now will require a lot of pusher power to work. a simple unbalanced prop or deviation in fixing the mount may leads to disaster to entire plane.

Not if you wanna glide around forever with the motor switched off.. My plane is 60x8" and around 1000gms (dont know the exact weight) and I still find it too heavy to glide properly.. But then again i'm new at flying so it may be my fault :) My friend comes to the field with his Multiplex Easyglider and stays up forever with the motor switched off.. Man that thing can glide!
Thanks xxkrishxx, SunLikeStar, sandeepm &
medicineman1987. :)
Sandeep thanks for the suggestion, but my friend has the same model & weighs 970 grams & he flys with the same type of mount using rubber band. If you look at the post #61 picture, i have just put 2 rubberband each side, that is just to show how the mount will sit on the wing, but i will use more rubber band.
Thanks :)
1Kg is too heavy even for a glider. But regarding the motor mount, you should test for in-flight shifting of the mount from any vibrations with the motor running. You don't want thrust direction changing or shifting in-flight! Even for the motor mount could lighten it by cutting out sections. Frankly, for the motor mount a skeleton about 10mm wide should be more than sufficient.
Thanks tg.
I will do the test.
Finished the hatch & also made a small seat for pilot from waste balsa.
Few pics attached.
More pics
Nice man! N the seat looks cool..
RC, You have a nice and stable hand on balsa carving ;)
put a pilot figure also on the seat....
oye!!!
not rubberband.. u have to fix the mount using valve tube...
Not sure how the motor is going to be mounted, but I have seen how well simple "cable-tie"s serve this purpose.
Great build

Nice one!!!
However a couple of points
1. Make sure that the thrust line on the motor is coorect. From the pictures it looks like you have upthrust. It would be easy to correct by shimming since it is banded on.
2. While flying make sure to cross a few bands around the pylon base, this would help to lock the pylon in base
3. You could have gained higer efficeincy by putting flaps instead of ailerons and also saved some weight (by using a single servo). Since this has a polyhedral wing, any rudder input alone would induce a bank as well. Flaps would have given you camber changing ability which would help in thermalling
And BTW large rubber bands would work perfectly and so would a cycle valve tube. With rubber bands you can even match the colour to your covering. Unfortunately the valve tube is availble in single colour. Also remember to mark the postion of the pylon on the wing so that every time you mount and dismount the pylon you have a reference to put it back.

Thanks flyingboxcar,
I have not fixed the motor mount permanently yet, I will fix it.
I will be using cycle valve tube.
Thanks again for all the valuable information.

I will be using cycle valve tube.
I can lend you a pair of 4mm / 6mm Nylon Bolts. Say what ;)
Hey thanks Ujjwal,
I will call you tomorrow.
If you would take my suggestion, do not use bolts to fix the wings on. Without a landing gear, high chances that while landing you may hit an obstruction with the wing. A band on wing will prove more reselient in such an unfortunate situation
Thanks all,
few more pics.
this looks great!!!!! waiting for maiden video!!!!

What have you used for filler on "cone" shape of the motor mount???
Sharad,
Giving the motor mount an Aerodynamic design is okay, but are you sure the motor thrust angle is 'full and final' ?

Hey nice one. But where did the little chair go??? :D
Thanks Rajath,
I am still thinking weather to put the little chair with pilot or a canopy.
Shard, the motor still looks like giving downthrust, you could keep it at 0-0 for test flight and then adjust as required. It should be easy to do so by just packing up the leading edge of the mount base while banding them in place on top of the wing.
On the chair/pilot , why dont you put them in, and then put a transparent piece of plastic canopy (made from suitable size of plastic bottle) so that you have streamlining and some detailing as well?

I will do the test flight at 0-0 & then adjust accordingly.
I am searching for a suitable bottle for the canopy, once i get that i will complete the canopy.
Thanks again for all the inputs.
