Hello friends...!! :)
After having been in this hobby as a mere spectator for more than 7 months now, I have decided to complete some of the projects that I had just, don't know how and why, abandoned..! I intend to maiden this bird alongwith my EZ*2... ;D ;D

As the topic says, the plane is known as Nova - originally designed & built by Trent from Mygeekshow.com... The plans are available on that site.. It is basically a pusher airplane designed by Trent for FPV... But I am just a beginner and want it to be my trainer plane..
I had prepared stencils as per plan and done all the cut outs in Dec last year itself and thereafter just stopped working on it any further.. I will post here the build details & pictures as and when I proceed with the build... Please post your valuable comments/suggestions - it won't be possible for me to complete the build without your help..

Some of the specifications of the plane are as follows :
Wingspan - 62"
Fuse length - 36" (original plan calls for 38")
Planned weight - 1kg

Although motor selection will come up at a much later stage, I would like to mention that looking at the space that I could manage for the prop, I will have to go by a 6" or maximum 7" prop...

Starting with fuselage, I have used 3 pieces of high density thermocol (3/4 of an inch thick) sandwiched between two biofoam pieces (10mm thick) at both the outer surfaces.. Pics are given below...

As far as wings are concerned, I plan to do a KFm3 airfoil (atleast something close to it!! :)) using biofoam and bamboo spar...will post the details/pics later today as I complete the wing..
Cheers...!!

Hey can you upload the plans? Their website seems to be down.

I have built this plane. Doesnt have good penetration. Even with a kf2 couldnt get a good glide with such a big wingspan.

Here is some progress... I've completed the wing and fuse..
The weight without any electronics, servos, pushrods, motor mount is 800 gms...
Fuse weight is 240 gms and wing is 560 gms, so total 800 gms... The AUW would be almost 1.2kg.. :o
Is this proportion of weight of wing to fuse okay? I think that the wing is quite heavy.. This is due to injudicious use of araldite for bamboo spar and wing joiner... Biofoam to biofoam has been stuck by water based glue fevicol.. But the wing has total 6 pieces of biofoam  of 30" each.. This might also be the reason for it being heavy... I read about the proportion of wing to fuse in terms of size/length being that fuse should be 0.75-0.80 of the wing span..Is there any such ratio for weight??
Please suggest me a motor for this plane... It is tail heavy and i had to add almost 350 gms as nose weight to balance at 1/3rd of chord.. 1 3s lipo and some coins of almost 150-160 gms...Thus, it would require a motor providing a thrust of minimum 1000 gms.. I have managed a space for 6" or maximum 7" prop...
I wanted to do a glide test by adding some nose weight in the same manner as we do for small chuck gliders.. But the sheer weight of the plane including additional nose weight didnot permit me to do so.. :o
Thanks....

Hello all..!!!!:)
I'm considering these motors for my Nova
a)NTM prop drive 2836 2200 KV http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__21481__NTM_Prop_Drive_28_36_2200KV_696W.html , or
b)NTM prop drive 2836 2700 KV http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__21482__NTM_Prop_Drive_28_36_2700KV_595W.html , or
c)NTM prop drive 3000 KV http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__21483__NTM_Prop_Drive_28_36_3000KV_755W.html

My preference is the NTM 2836 2700 KV...
Please suggest me a good motor for Nova, may be from amongst these three or otherwise..  :help: I did'nt find higher KV motors running 6" or 7" prop with a thrust of more than 1kg with any LHS... Thus, I pointed out the above 3 motors..
Can I go with the motor for EZ*2 available with RCDhamaka for this plane?

I've one more query regarding pushrods to be used for my plane.. I initially thought of using a 2mm 18 gauge GI wire.. These are quite strong but I fear these might flex since my plane is going to be quite heavy, about 1.20kgs... Should I use 2mm CF rods or I've some strong but light bamboo sticks also, which can also be used.. Please give me your suggestion and help me... :help: :help:

@ foamybuilder : since you've already built this plane, do you have any specific points that I should look for..? Can you please share some details and pics of your nova, if you have any? My wing airfoil is KFm3 and there is no dihedral.. Considering that there is no dihedral, should I go with ailerons so that there would be better control over the flight?

Thanks.....

I have not built the nova but built one with similar(very) proportions. I am only a beginner but some things that caught my attention on this bird are:
1) Your LE seems to be a little blunt ???
2) Due to the huge flat surface of the fuse just beneath the wings, this plane does not handle crosswinds well(Mine crashed because I could not handle this in the wind)
3) You would be better off with a T tail like the one on the skywalker.
4) You need ailerons because this will tip stall like crazy and the rudder offers little or no roll authority.
5)Use bicycle spokes for control rods.
6) If possible add some polyhedral to the wings.
Best of luck!! :)

Hi Tushar......thats a nice build. Just some points you could consider:

1. You could achieve more or less the same results with a LOT LESS biofoam - you could also try thermocole

2. You mentioned that original fuse was 38" and you reduced it to 36" - quite possibly this additional two inches would have been from the LE to the nose - as I see it, good chances that the plane would be tail heavy requiring you to add nose weight making the plane more heavy - something you should try and avoid to the extent possible.
Since you have the plan, look out for ideal/target weight and wingloading - this would help you re-think on your build approach.

3. KFm2 airfoil works great - the same you have tried. Yet, make efforts to keep the LE as 'smooth' as possible.

Impressive size :) do let us know the gear and the maiden experience.

Good luck.
