well I am not too sure about the ES5a card build....taxi trial is fine, seems plenty of power but not been able to get out yet......plus its school holidays here so little kiddies every where.
so have ordered a 'Piper Super Cub Micro Balsa Kit A-CK8 for C02 Power '
but will want it electric powered.
It's 24inch wing span and balsa and tissue build,
question what motor /esc combo would be good for this [7.4volt 2s lipo ]..............I have no idea of the weight, but not a lot I would have thought
your ideas appreciated for a newbee to planes. I will be adapting it to 4 ch with ele/ail/rudder

Iam currently doing mine on the guillows corsair.. 4ch set up (trying to use a 250 heli motor .. 25amp esc and 2cell 850mah.. might be too heavy but will experiment till i get this done... and few pics on facebook.. will post a thread once its built and flown later..

hi guys.
well I have been revising the full size plan 'that was not included' haha only a text article on the fuselage build nothing about the wings construction.
they should have a 1 1/4 in dihedral on each wing [ two separate wings joined permanently in a V over the center of fuse].
what I propose is the more normal setup for Cessna, piper etc with a flat wing section over the fuse and then each wing half being fixed to that.
I am contemplating even a hinged wing ...folding back each side......... similar to the fairy swordfish and other biplanes to make transport easier than a 24 inch fixed winged plane.or even incorporating two dowels and elastic the full wing on, which would be far easier than a hinge each side, but leaves the problem of the wing struts from the fuse bottom to the wing for support.
I have started the wings....they are a single sheet of less than 1.5mm balsa on a 3 1/2in cord [ imperial size, old kit]. with 'two' ribs only each in 12 inch wing section and a wedge leading edge baton in the kit
so I may well get another sheet of balsa and skin the under side for strength, I will also be making 'ply ribs to go at the joint end [at fuse] of each wing,
I think the wings are far too 'fragile' and weight has been dangerously kept low, the complete kit 'in the box' only weighs 0.20kg
so a little extra would not go amiss I think.

well I have made a decision................
I will be making a center section for the wings which will fix with elastic to pegs in fuse.
the supplied wings........
two pieces of less than 1.5mm thick balsa sheet.
two tapered leading edge spars,
two wing profile gusset's 'per wing'.

I will use the 'wing support' spars supplied to form the dihedral as this appears to be bamboo or similar and the wing will then support it's self.
I will also be covering the bottom surface of the wings for more strength, add two more profile spars per wing [ ply] and a spar through the high section of the profile to help with the dihedral
that will then give a 25+inch span and a 3 1/2inch cord..............unless I add ailerons which was the original idea.
mmmmmmmmm I wonder if the rest of the build will be like this ??? ???

hi guys.
well started the fuselage. 34mm long, the motor goes on the end with an extra cowl fitted over it making the total fuse length
around 37mm [14 1/2 inches] plus prop and rudder.
this is sheet balsa 'pre-cut' sections. reinforced with spars
here is one side with spars fitted .
the black lines are spars to be fitted,
the green is firewall/bulkheads still to be fitted for motor and battery compartment,
the red dots are dowels locations for the wing elastic bands on reinforced areas.:)

I won't be doing the center wing section until the fuse is one piece as there is not a plan for this, and I will need the completed fuselage as a template for the finished size. :)

shown are the two sides and positions for the bulk heads and motor mount just have to add another spar at bottom front of fuse and another 'window' spar
to add strength for the wing mount area dowel locations now reinforced ready for drilling ......I am going to use 3mm carbon rod for the dowels to take the wing elastic fastening, one at bottom front of cabin windows/screen and one at top rear of cabin area..
hope fully I will be putting the two halves together tonight.

and the wings have their profile now........with the two extra ones I fabricated from softwood....these new ones will have a spare through them into the center section which will give the dihedral.
I think this will be much stronger than the origional two strut wing as supplied. ;D

If i may say so, there is something wrong with the way you have fixed the undercarriage, Track seems less, she will touch wings on ground during take off landing and ground manoeuvrings. take care of that.

AUW [without 2x 4gm servos ] is 0.22kg so 220g ? what happened to lbs and onz ?? :)
with a 1800kv motor at 7.4v [KD 2203/34 9A 1800Kv Brushless Outrunner Motor] with a stock 'esky' belt cp esc :) 30a but very small
running a 6x4E sport prop.
[ I have on order 2 x TGY Slow Fly Prop 8*3.8SF, I was thinking I could cut these down a bit .....about 7... to give ground clearance and a little more thrust ]
only just got all the electrics in ........esc the nose and battery and rx under the wing center.
balance is very slight nose down but servos to go on at trailing edge of wing for ele and rudder.

Cox 0.049 Glow is a powerfull little beast, just about say around 100gms incl all accessories. Nitro Hungry, drives a 6x4 prop comfortably. Ideal is 5x5. Can fly a light balsa model of wing span up to 39 Inches. Could see the photo of cox 0.049 on the cowl of the model on the ebay link provided so the querry.
Not really come across a CO engine, so cannot comment really.

just an update.........
I had tech difficulties with the motor I was going to use......... built in prop saver, but one screw was not a good thread fit and gave out when swaoping to another prop. so I had to change the motor to to the 'blue' 1700kv.. now swinging a 8 x 5 prop cut back to 7 x 5........not enough ground clearance for the 8...It was within mm of the floor when tail was flying.........
so any way a quick video for you .....holding down by the axle and varying degrees of throttle applied......

the elev still not on servo......still waiting but now have the rods done and horns fitted.

next job while waiting for the servos I will fit a short ground/base loaded aerial to get rid of the long MHz aerial seen wrapped around the fuselage at the moment.

just a small doubt....are u using 24gm blue wonder motor? i think it will be little heavy and overpowered... just doubt!!
i think 16gm HXT motor from HK will be best for ur plane!!! with 300-500 mAh 2s Lipo, 15A ESC and suitable prop with 5gm or 4 gm servos!!!!!

I am not very well up on motors so just looked for one that had 300+thrust with what ever prop they suggested at 2s volts ......most seem to like 8in + sizes :)
so I have had to redesign the under-carriage to give ground clearance.......... perhaps 'functional' and not aesthetic /scale type looks is the way to go :) :)

Don, is this a slow fly prop? Will it suit? , prop tips are sawed off or what? Is it balanced ? Apparently not(I reiterate apparently), recheck your horn again, the hole in the horn should be in line with the hinge, perfection at this will be better. Why prop saver on a balsa model, models with slightly higher pull, prop saver won't work. Just my 2c bit.
1. I read that 8x5 to 7x5. Not a good idea, the helical twist of a prop needs to taper to near zero at the tips, other wise(a) there will he tip loss and (b)might vibrate as well, consider changing the prop
2. Is the wing laterally balanced? stbd balsa seems to have a nudge, that could cause lateral static imbalance, unlike foamie, balsa model making is real aeromodelling, and you have done a fantastic job :hatsoff: (Sorry my foamie friends)

the prop savers came with the motor.....to be honest with the size of the rubber supplied I doubt it would work ...I take it the idea of a prop saver is for the rubber to give out at contact?........... these rubbers are 'big' hahaha,
I got a spare set and they are more like elastic bands than this one is.
the prop is ballanced staticly and does not vibrate at all any where in the rev range.as for the tip off...............this I read some where but may have been ..just to get back in the air quickly...with the larger landing gear I can just get away with an 8in but not sure if as you said earlier it may not need that big a prop,
I tried vertical running and there is not quite enough power to hold it vertical, makes it very light and 'floaty' with my hand around the fuselage...
how would you test for prop size ? purly in flight?
idealy I think it prob does not want the motor to run at full revs once airbourne?
my knowledge of plane flying is sadly lacking I'm afraid.
wings.......they are laterally balanced, but the construction is such..........just a sheet of basla with formers added :) ........... that there could well be 'inbuilt probs' not having a proper frame work ...trouble with the early cheap kits........... they look even and when on the craft it is laterally balanced as well . but I suppose airflow is the big test. :)
the next kit will be a proper one with frames and spars...hopefully this may be a reasonable trainer......I have a few years on helis but planes were 30+ years ago now.;)
horns.....this may be why 'in the post on horns etc......... no body used servo horns in this way I will see if they will angle enough to be at the hinge,....or even buy some hahaha.
what do you find is good hinge? I tried the flexy plastic but adhesion is not what I would have liked.

Floaty is good, Just give it a good run before lift off, I still suspect your Thrust line(Both the Firewall, and the mount), Rudder horn above the wing? wont it be better if it went under with the servo arm facing downwards to give you a good clean sweep of the servo and throw o fthe rudder. Front wing dowel is interesting. mmm . a control rod sweep at an angle will change your throw at sine of the servo to horn sweep angle. no?. May be i am nitpicking, She is good to go stock. :thumbsup:

Practically seen, rubber pulled down more tends to lift in flight, don't ask me why, I dunno, observed data. That's why dowels are closer to the wings. For a small aeroplane may not matter

well the servos have actualy arrived now and fitted with reversing and throws sorted.
the rudder fin is now mounted with a rod hinge as the flex plastic adhesion was definitely not good, the elev seems ok with flex plastic hinge though.
also I have covered the under side of wing..............
1/ because I thought it did not look right ;)
2/ because of the spar giving the dihedral was exposed and I have a feeling I read somewhere an exposed spar under the wing surface slows the plane down........
also I have fitted the soft plastic cowling at the front with air flow vents.

the problem now is autum is here and we are in quite strong winds [for this size plane :) ] 15 -20 mph
so maiden will be in a while.

hi mate.
It was not until I took that pic I saw the 'blow out' on the new under wing skin at left wing leading edge.......this is now rectified :)
that would most likely have given an 'auto left turn' being blunter than the right wing leading edge :) :) :)
and I will prob need all the help from the air frame I can get :) :) :)
also I have put the lighter prop save rubber on...........
would it pay me to get the threaded nose cone assembly for the prop then do you think?
