I'm making the Red Swan Balsa Kit from RC Bazaar. I'm going to use it as my entry for the sweepstakes ;D
I had earlier made the J3 Piper Cub from RCB, a similar kit. Althoigh the wood quality & Laser cutting are OK, there is no plan, and ignorable instructions. So it's a lot more fun
Here goes:
First the mandatory date bit ;)
Started with the fuse. I used a 2627 motor (also from RCB) I had lying around. Of course, the holes in the firewall did not fit :)
The Instruction Sheet: (Admin: this should qualify as scratch built :))
OK, go ahead and laugh! It happens to everyone
thats happens to all..... i dont know how...but once i managed to epoxy an complete build wing to my pants... relized when i was planning to get up from the chair that the wing which was drying on the epoxy was kept on my lap.... :banghead: :banghead:
Nice kit and good build there.
I am thinking would make a nice model for 1/2 A Glow size.
PS : This is from your competition : "Grrr...... By building a RCB Kit you have taken an edge over us for the PT -20 Ryan. We will surely pitch in with an RCB kit build too to match that Grrr.... " :giggle: ;D
Yes, it would, e.g. a .049 Cox, or even a Fox 0.10. Only problem is the fuse is very narrow, about 30 mm at engine mount point, and you would need to put long engine bearers in hardwood (e.g. spruce.....a commercial engine mount would not fit) Of course the Cox engine would not need this, but a sturdy firewall, and some landing gear jugaad to save the prop.
I don't think either of us have to worry about the PT 20, as Sujju is not a judge, only a donor ;D ;D
Anwar-bhai...I doubt you can be influenced :giggle:, as you have as kind a heart as Idi Amin - almost :D
30mm is a sufficient space for a Cox 0.049 as well as for a small fuel tank behind firewall. More so because COX is front firewall mounted unlike on rails. With the wingspan and being a glider would be an ideal model.
PS : ;D Two youngsters were just challenging their tough competitor sir :)
I cannot compete against these imaginative, dynamic and hard-working talented youngsters :( ;)
Some more pics:
The fuse complete with servos, tail feathers complete (craziest vertical stab I've ever built!)
(Please do not notice my big tummy in the pic)
Great going sir {:)}

With one Salvo you have silenced your competition and made them your ally. :hatsoff:
Lol Sandy boss!
Some more pix: Starting the wing now
Nice and complicated! Lots and lots of parts, and no idea where they all go! Negligible instructions, and no plans ;D ;D
The pics
Grate build sir. Please take snaps in high resolution for future please. Time won't come back.
And a fantastic build.
Thank you sir.
I had to downsize the pictures! More than 200 Kb is not allowed. They were originally 1.5~1.8 MB
Sanjai sir use irfan view and resize it to 1024x768 pix
Will go under 100 kb
My 10mb pics are converted to 150kb like this..
OK Arun, will try. I have to download Irfan first
Looking great!

The tail feathers aren't glued. Now I have to cover, and fit the Controls
Sir Your bird is getting into shape....
That it is, thanks Swizera
Nice build...
Hell of a workshop you have!!!
The model is coming along well, however, the workshop is ......... (:|~
You are inspiring me to literally clean up my act on my workshop! :banghead:
p.s. That's a nice Jig you got there - Pine Marten? ;D
Thanks Ujjwana
Do it Now VC! ;D
Will do Sir. Right now everything is scattered all across 4 addresses, including Calcutta. Consolidating everything into two premises in the next couple of months, hopefully.
See the edit in my earlier post, you are making me JT wise all over again.
I didn't understand the Jig - Pine Marten bit
One of their lesser known tracks:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfW7exX-yxI
OK. Yes, I've experienced it, didn't know the name 8-)
Sir, the build does justice to the name and vice versa.
You mean the vice does build to the justice? :D Or the versa does vice to the just buildice :D :D
heheh, I meant the build is as elegant as the name and the name is as elegant as the build
Seems like some people are not really aware of what Vice Versa means. Here is the perfect example:
This portrayal is a work of artistic imagination and bears no resemblance to any vehicle dead or alive. :giggle:
Apologies to Sanjay Sir, I promise not to disturb any more.
What nonsense VC!
That is incomplete without this

Love the fine print in the picture caption :D
Sir, you tempt me and I succumb. Jokes apart, you need this to add to your workshop.
http://www.adventtools.co.uk/specialist/vice_versa.html
Btw, with the drugs and alcohol included in the vehicle, I felt it was a perfect VICE versa. All vices included, I mean.
True VC, wasn't aware of Advent. Like most, I've been on the learning path after my birth, not before. And since the first time I held a measuring tape, it was Stanley, never needed to move to another ;)
The comparison was to the bird swan, which, classically, is considered a symbol of elegance VC; Versa, never intended a comparison to a vehicle (ground or air/dead or alive/out of service or in). Wouldn't actually do that to the Versa of all (It's a box). In case you own one, apologies, but it's still a box. I know, I know what you meant.
And yes the vise, oh fully understand what a vise is (as I learnt it back in the growing up days toying in my dad's toolbox and an engineering course); The Americans seem to have continued the differentiation of the "s" vs "c". I prefer to use the same methods to differentiate between veekah versah and the third hand.
BTW, What's with the 'vise' humoring mode turning into the hammering mode ;)
Due to shifting from Navi Mumbai back to Gurgaon, and falling ill after return, I was unable to complete this. :banghead:
I do plan to unpack, and set up my workshop again this week, and then will complete it! :thanks:
OK, I've unpacked and set up shop again. Made another table for assembly ;D
Hingeing using Mylar Hinges
Covering
I used Transparent + Chequered film from RCD
This Transparent film needs pretty precise temperature control, I think. I'm not any sort of expert, but I did find it difficult. Maybe because I was using a travel iron, the thermostat of which is not too precise. Plus, was getting lots of Voltage Fluctuation ( Gurgaon :) )
Covering finished. Servos & motor fitted. I used Blenderm tape from HK for the Aileron Hinges
Got freaked out! Was testing the motor and prop, as I increased the throttle, suddenly the motor shaft sheared off and the prop/spinner flew off and cracked me on the forehead :o :o
Wonder why? I don't think there was any overtightening anywhere; first time I've had that happen. It's a Odin 2627, with a threaded shaft. Guess the shaft was weak at the failure point
the model looks beautiful sir :hatsoff: waiting for the maiden video after the motor change :)

nice build sir
waiting for the beauty to be in air.
Your workshop looks more Organized than ever before. The model is turning out to be a beauty.
Thanks Anand, Swizera and Sandy. SS, hope you noticed my new addition - a green cutting mat - inspired by you ;D
Works shop looks great, using travelling iron is not a good idea, HK one ain't bad at all
True, Gusty. RCB has a prolux Iron, Rs. 3800 :(
The Green Mat is Nice Sanjay sir. I don't know where to get a socks for my sealing iron.
Have a grandchild and then steal his cotton booties
I forgot to thread the aileron servo wire through the wing ribs before covering :banghead: :banghead:
I'll take it from outside, under the wing on the spar line, and fix with tape. Will it cause excess turbulence and affect the flying?
I can console myself saying if I have to change a servo it will be easy ;D

Some pics
I contacted Sujju of RCB about the motor. He unfalteringly said send it back, he will replace {:)} :thanks:
That looks like a light build. It will Beautifully Soar with even a Cox if the CG is perfect'
ps: Thanks for the idea sir could not wait for a grandson though :giggle: went ahead and bought a pair of baby cotton socks. fits perfectly for now.
Sanjay Sir,
You cant post pics of neat workshops like this. How do you think guys like me feel? See mine.
Thought I'd crib like some of the others!
Sandy, it will be excellent with a Cox 049! With 1500 mAH, Motor, ESC, Servos etc AUW is about 500 gms,
KK Iyer sir, I think your shop is wonderful. Enhanced certainly by those beautiful models!
Sandy boss, glad to hear about the cotton sox. Let us know how they work out  ;D
Some more pics. Just waiting on the motor now
I had this Landing gear lying around, and these acrylic bolts, and the L/G was only 10 gms, and I just couldn't resist.......
Sanjay sir,
The model looks very beautiful. And I can only dream of a workshop like yours.
Where did you get the large shelf with those drawers. I've been looking for one to store all my electronic stuff and nuts and bolts.
GS
PS: Apologies could not join you on Saturday, change of plans. Will ensure I make myself available this weekend. Would love to see this model in air.
Would you like to maiden it? I'm looking for someone; my skill level is not good enough ;D
Sanjay sir, given your years of experience, my skill level comes no way close to yours. Putting this beauty to her maiden flight, while so exciting, would be a disgrace if done with trembling fingers. :D. I will spend some time this week to come over the stage fright.
GS
Girish, are you storing your fingers in the icebox?
Two seasoned veterans & RC pilot talking about shivering hands and trembling fingers :o
;D Why trying to scare youngsters like us :giggle:
Sandy boss: I am an expert in everything RC except flying. I do mean to learn how to fly one of these days!
Sir wish you many year of Happy Flying :hatsoff:
Hehe, Sanjay sir, yes my hands have kinda been in the ice box since beer took over cookies and candy...lol
Sandy sir, your reply, while funny, is in essence, very motivating...I think the fright is already gone...
Thanks Girish ;D
She is definitely a beauty Sanjay sir. Waiting to see her in the air.
PS : was that by design servo on top?
The servo went on top by itself ;D ;D
No instructions either way, so....
Hope it doesn't create problems :headscratch: :headscratch:
The free replacement motor has come today! Thank you RCB
Back to work tomorrow evening!

Long time pending aspiration to try my hand on this kit for a Cox 0.049 facilitated by Sorav.
Thanks to Sanjay Sir for paving the road for us. This thread came handy building this without plans.
The kit is from RCB and owner is Sorav. :)
Quality of kit is very good. would have been great if it had a plan and some improvement to wing joining method in the kit.
Progress till now.

Less the two more 9 gms servo and carbon push rods, BEC, receiver, 2S Lipo 500mah it weighs just about 285 gms with everything inside. Pretty light I must say. With everything will not even touch 400 gms. ideal model for Cox 0.049.
I suspect i will have problems with CG as its tending towards tail heavy as of now with cox. I will have to fit everything else upfront and may be go for a higher lipo too.
@ Girish, Mahin, Nilharsh Thanks.
@ Kamalsahai yes its a glider.
Looks a beauty Sandy Sir {:)} {:)} :salute:
For CG you could try moving the wing back?
Didn't you use a Sullivan Flex Tank?
Thanks Sanjay Sir,
That's a nice idea sir but I have already fitted the cross members with blind nut and bolted the wing nice in place in the groove. will try with remaining electronics. I may not be so badly off since CG is at 40% now. will get it at the wing spar.
I have used a Sullivan Flex tank 2 ounces. It has to be heat molded to shape if required which I have done.
Put a landing gear
Its with cox without throttle. Will always be a dead stick glide in for landing would not be too much worried for prop damage sir as the prop has been fitted to always stops at horizontal position on engine kill. May be a wings skid on belly is all that would be required.
I meant to set the CG
That's definitely a great idea sir.
CG ultimately turned out to be perfect without any additional mod.
By far one of the best models for cox.

  congratulations sir! Video little difficult in viewability
Thank Sir, my apologies for that.
our official cameraman is out of town and enjoying his holidays in Pune. The Brat will be back only on 16th. :giggle: :giggle:
Nice to hear a Cox sing after many years.
Seems quite fast with the Cox!
Yes sir. The Kit is very well designed with a very thin wing profile and excellent penetration & glide characteristics. It was just 8% Nitro in fuel and it was real fast in one more lean setting. I am sure it will be really fast with a 20-25% Nitro fuel.
Only down side was it was really difficult to fit a 9 gms servo flushed inside this thin wing profile. I had to cut out slot on the lite ply servo plate. The covering film is now touching both sides of the servo.
awfsome! the swan goes swanky ;)
Congrates sir good video
Update: Girish bought off the Red Swan and put a Cox .049 on it :D
Meanwhile in Russia.....

@SanjayRai - sirji highly inspired with your built logs , I too have bought this from a LHS.
Would like to know what electronics have you used on them.
Use 9 gram Servos all round, a small motor, about 120-150 Watts, with a medium RPM (about 1200-1500 KV) and a prop/ESC to suit
It's an easy build; the "instructions" are not always correct ;) ;D so test fit and check before gluing
Good luck
Thanks Sir @SanjayRai :-)
This is my first built of a kit. Any tips / suggestions .
Reduce the slope of the learning curve
Don't worry too much. Just be a little careful, that's all. It's a relatively simple build
Do study the various stressed parts like wing joints etc. It would be a good idea to reinforce them
Sanjayji: What is the glue you used..I too have one kit lying with me for a long time now, will start the build
For balsa, cyano. Asian paints has introduced a Loctite medium cyano, available in all paint dealers for Rs. 70 for 20 ml. Its good
The covering is coated with heat sensitive adhesive. There are many videos on applying Monokote on YouTube

Is this plane gud for a beginner???
is this plane gud for beginner???
It's OK for someone who has some experience in flying and building models. Preferably should have built some Balsa model before
That said, it's not particularly difficult once you understand how all the parts go together
RCB had some simpler models too
eg http://rcbazaar.com/product.aspx?productid=1443
Sir, i have build a guillow model and 2 scratch build models, will this workout.
Which scratch built? Which materials
Guillows is good
I think you should manage; the instruction manual is not very good, has some mistakes, but it might have been improved by now
Also, this model uses heat shrink covering
Scratch build I made it in balsa and guillow's Pilatus Porter model I did.

@abhilash9797,
There is enough material from two very experienced members in this very thread to enable you to decide if it suits you. The main problem is the lack of instructions.
However since you still have doubts why don't you post pics of your builds, especially the Pilatus Porter?
And if you post a step by step build log, and get stuck at any stage, I'm sure you'll get a solution from someone on the forum.
Best of luck.
I think you should just bite the bullet, buy the kit, and build it :D
Should I give this plane any down thrust angle or paste the firewall following the front of the fuselage.
It's been 4+ years, but I suggest you first assemble without glue and check. Most probably the thrust is built in. Else, you could always add a washer or two later
What is the height of the dihedral angle at the tip of the wing.
Go as per the supplied dihedral braces
What is the approx height at the tip of the wing.
And will it fly if I have a straight wing without dihedral.

Your asking this very question is adequate reason why you should not change the original design
What kind of wing mounting does this plane have?
See your instruction sheet, and see the Build Log. These kind of questions really show a lack of application
@abhilash9797,
You may not realise it, but your questions tell us a lot (or at least a bit) about you!
Mr Rai can easily give you a step by step guide.
But the fact is he has already done so many times right here in this forum.
Could you put in a little effort to search?
Lot more pleasure in finding out than in being told
Another senior (Col sundaram sir)also posted a build of this model but with a glow engine.
See if you can find it.
Instead of just asking, perhaps you could seek?
Incidentally, if you are new to this hobby, pl consider getting a high qualiity kit like Guillows. Expensive but instructions are detailed.
Regards.
Pl PM me for anything you are not able to find out yourself. Glad to help.
What was the final weight of the model?
About 650 grams including a 3S 1500 mah LiPo
I'm getting 570 gms with 3s 1500mah battery.
Sir, the carbon rods supplied in the kit are too flexible and that makes my control surface work correctly in pull and wrongly in push of the servo. What can I do to correct this problem as I'm first time working on carbon pushrods.
They are rigid enough. Check and see if nothing is fouling
