Hi everyone,

Didn't build even one RC model so far this year.
The last one was the Royal Coachman in Nov 2022.
Just realised that I never posted a build log.
In brief, it's a design by Don Dewey published in RCModeller June 1965 (plan #oz1302 on Outerzone.co.uk)
41" span. Mine weighs about 700gms with an OS10LA.

This year built only control line models.
1. Cox 049 powered Phantom Mite to get me back into C/L. Built from a sketch made based on a 1945 Keil Kraft kit (Outerzone plan #oz881 and #oz1404). Did two flights and sent it off to a friend in Ahmedabad.
2. Own design 'Musty' for Cox 049. Sent to a friend in Ghaziabad.
3. Own design Bede BD-8 for electric power! Flies well but not aerobatic due to weight of lipo
4. Own design 'ComBat' for Cox 049. Sent to Ghaziabad
5. Own design 'Simpler Nobler', a 30" version of the original George Aldrich Nobler of 1953, the most copied control line stunt design of all time! Mine has a 60 year old OS Pet III .09. Not yet flown.

Details posted over last few months on this board, as no separate place for CL...

So time for an RC build.
And that brings us to the topic of this thread.

The Sharkface is a 22" span single channel design by Eric Clutton, published in July 1965 Aeromodeller.
It's a long time classic aerobatic model from the days of bang-bang push button RC.
One press is left rudder, next press is right, next left and so on.
Having flown this way in the late 60s, I can tell you that it's not easy to remember whether the next push will be right or left!
And the 'servo' was rubber powered...

With its tiny size, the original flown with a 1.5cc diesel must have been a real bomb.

Outerzone.co.uk plan #oz4416 and #oz10062

Why undecided?

1. Balsa or Depron?
2. Glow or Electric?

Good luck. But, why not a 1.5 cc Diesel?

It's only 22" span!
Your 38" Hornet itself was FAST with the Cox 049...

Nice video of a very stable model

Which is your flying field? A cricket ground?

Thanks, Sanjay sir. I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth it was. Wife immediately offered to fly it, but not accepted till a few more flights are logged!

Yes, it's a cricket ground, but accessible only occasionally.

But back to the Sharkface.
Made some progress and hope to complete it tomorrow...

K K Iyer

Almost there...

K K Iyer

manojswizera

Hope that shark doesn't bite those wires from the esc. 😅, nice build sir.

Bruce Matthews on RCGROUPS pointed out that with the silver finish the nodel would be hard to see.
He's right. And I do get disoriented often.
So I gave the bottom of the wing a shot of red.
Hopefully that'll help me know whether it's turning towards me or away from me!

Hi everyone,

It's exactly one year since I built the Sharkface as a foamie.

So time to salvage the fuselage and tail pieces I had cut in balsa and build the woodie version.

I should have built a tissue covered open structure balsa wing.

But then I thought it's been years since I built a glass covered foam wing.

So that's what I'm doing.

Took one of the pieces of dense thermocol packing I had been saving, and hotwired the wing halves with my 3s lipo powered hotwire cutter.

Added balsa LE and TE.

Still had some of the 18gsm glass cloth I got from HobbyKing over 10 years ago. This material is a real joy to work with. I've done the bottom of the wing halves, and will do the top tomorrow after the epoxy sets.

We'll see how much heavier this version is than the foamie was (189gms ready to fly!)

sanjayrai55

Which Epoxy do you use

Wings look too good. Nice hot wire.

For years I'd been using Bob Smith Ind 20 min Finish Cure epoxy, but it's nearly finished.

Found something on Amazon that works, For Rs 283, though the sticker on the bottles say 499+299!

How to get that speckled finish on the wing?  ;D
