Title: Skeeter40 Converted to Foam.
Post by: kakka_rao on February 17, 2013, 07:55:52 PM
Hi guys here is new build. Skeeter 40 The original plans are for balsa, but as i dont have balsa and not having any experience towards balsa plane building. I decided to make it in foam.

wing span 40 inch which is cut from HD thermocole and covered with tarsperant RED film with help of Electric Iron (Domestic). The 6mm carbon rod will be placed for the strength.

the fuse is cut from bio foam 25 mm thick. Will have 2 carbon rods 3mm on either side for the strength.

i dont know the weight yet but think will be around 800-900 gm.

kaka : I think the wings are made of high density thermacol? Beautiful work with hot wire.
The wings are fantastically shaped .
really inspiring.....

Kakka rao your efforts are strengthining my point to believe in thermacol...

Thermacol is no less better than balsa.....if done appropriately it can be as good as balsa plane.
As far as a person does not do crash the performance of thermacol and Balsa would be at par.

Some +s of thermacol....
Cheap, Easy built and easy crafting since it is full body rather than frame of sticks.

-s of thermacol...
needs stiffening, finishing is not as good as balsa, big planes >40 inch WS not easy to make, tought to attach hard points such as landing gear, motor mount etc.
