I am planning to make this a complete thread with pictures for assistance of our friends out here.  I wish to make this thread interesting by adding pictures and as far as possible by using household items for construction. It's likely to be a 1.5 - 2 meter glider as I have always preferred making gliders over powered models.  It will be of foam (thermocol) as it is easy to buy, cut and shape.

Interested people may kindly send in their queries if they have any..... as this will help me plan my construction in such a manner that it addresses their specific concerns..... I intend to show our friends here that a good glider can be made at a small cost and the same methods can then be used to make whatever model anyone of you wish to make....

looking for responses...
regards

The first post was an earlier one of mine.... which was about 15 days ago..... much water has gone over the issues since then and I am now getting into the act of making the RC Gliders.  Instead of one model I am now doing two models together.  One is my favorite one i.e. Sharma Models APPLE BOX.  It is a 2 mtr poly dihedral 3 ch RC Glider using Rudder, Elevator and Engine controls.  My Apple Box will be similar but the second wing I make will have Ailerons too making it a four ch glider.  The Second one is a 1.7 mtr glider.  The plans of which I downloaded from the net (called Guppy).  I am not sure when I will finish but my aim is to demonstrate the following....:-
1.   A complete scratch built model.
2.   Use of alternate material instead of Balsa.  I plan to make the wings of both the models out of High Density Thermocol... with Fiber Glass cloth and paper to provide the required strength.
3.   Use of alternate covering material like Synthetic Gift Wrap sheet (used for covering gift at regular gift shops... it costa roughly Rs 5 per sheet) and Vinyl sheet.
4.   Treating the wood with DOPE to provide it resistance from weather, water and fuel remains.  This is a must for all models and I know many aeromodelers  either do not do this or are not aware of this.
5.   I intend to fly these gliders using Sharma 1.5 CC Diesels but may turn to electric motor if someone gives me a good deal.  The model is likely to weigh about 2 Kgs + when completed.

Wish me luck friends.....
AND Happy learning for the one who are still finding their way into this hobby....

NOW LET ME DROP THE BOMB............. I aim to keep the cost of both the model together down to a few hundred rupees and definately not go over Rs 1000/-

Here is the description of the pictures....
Pic 1..... This is the 5 Ch JR set which I got when I cleared my 10th standard sometime in 1982.  Still works well....
Pic 2..... These are the result of a 3 in dia dry bamboo being split into 4.  I am going to use this to make my Hot Wire Bow for cutting the Thermocol sheet and also to make my year long + supply of bamboo dowels.... Anyone looking for bamboo dowels?????
Pic 3..... This is my box of scrap balsa wood which I managed from all over the places..... all pieces can be used at some place or the other...
Pic 4..... These are 3 mm sheets of my home grown Balsa.  I grew two Balsa trees at my home and cut them when the trunk was of abut 6-8 in girth.  This particular trunk was cut sometime in the 1990s and the sheets cut by me at the local woodcutters machine about a month ago.  I did some labour to sand them smooth.  These sheets will be my workhorse.

These are a few more pictures....
Pic 1.... This is the print of the downloaded file of design of Guppy.
Pic 2.... This is my enlargement of the A3 sheet print right to the required scale.  It is being made also to suit the requirements of a Balsa construction of the wing.  It will be a 1.7 mtr glider.
Pic 3.... This the drawing of Apple Box from Sharma models.  I am going to make two wings for this model out of which one will have ailerons.

Well thanks Sir..... lets see.... even my place has good amount of area for flying... if I can manage that or else... then me and Gaurav will hit towards Phaphamau

Here are a few more pictures....
Pic 1.... Had to buy all that thermocol where as just needed 3 sheets of 2 in HD thermocol and 3 sheets of 3 in HD thermocol.  The guy was not willing to sell in so less a quantity... so was forced to buy 10 sheets of 2 in HD thermocol and he relented and gave me 2 sheets of 3 in ones.  Total cost..... Rs 700 for the 10 2 in ones..... i.e. Rs 70 each sheet and Rs 100 for each of the 3 in sheets.
Pic 2.... These are my home made sanding blocks which I will need.... made from scrap wood at the local carpenter's shop.  Cost of the blocks put together Rs 50 and then the cost of the sand papers of grit 80, 100 and 120.  Total cost Rs 100.

So far have spent Rs 1000 for these items..... they will made me some 10 - 12 wings of the kind I need.

Home grown Balsa ?  :o  That takes scratch building to a whole new level ! All the best with the build my friend. Here is a construction video for the guppy. This will help you build foam core wings for your model. Hope this helps!

shobhit17

Thanks a lot buzz_rc.... that video is going to be a great help..... have used this Balsa soon after I started doing aeromodelling.  Its a bit grainy and heavier... well it serves my purpose....

Subscribed   {:)} {:)} {:)} Planing to join you in your scratch build as there are loads of left over scrap balsa and lite ply left over with me from my  earlier laser cut kit build of mine. I have to build at least three to four balsa/lite ply models for my Cox Engine and 1/2 A size Collections.

sundaram

VC dada you are really tempting me with those Photos. Build them fast. I am already drooling  (:|~ (:|~ getting ideas to whack them from you.  >:D

Shobhit sir, You ''DOPE'' Technique is great.  :salute:

Friend i have used the same, after getting some advise from shobhit sir. and it really came out great.
dope not only prevent balsa from weather and water, it also gives great strength to Balsa model.

More about Dope will be guided by shobhitji.

Thanks Swizera.... there are a host of such small things which give durability and more strength to the model.... hope your covering also worked fine.

Dear Sundaram...... well I need to thank Vivek Sharma and his father for support to me.... This scrap wood is from them....  If I could do it.... I would pick up all of it from them and use it.

Well a few more things done till now.... I made my simple contraption for cutting the foam and making the basic foam blocks on which I will put my aerofoil templates to make the aerofoil shape of the wings.  As I was doing this I decided to cut foam blocks for both the wings.  Here are a few pictures...

Pic 1.   This shows my simple contraption for cutting the foams a 2 in thich HD foam sheet.  One can see the bamboo bow with the Guitar "E" string attached to it as the bowstring and the wires connected to it from my inverter battery.  The centre table was used as a guide for the bow to run along its legs to give me a straight run of the hot wire for cutting.  I used the legs of the table to run my wire along it... up to down.  The table under was used to place the foam sheet which was to be cut.

Pic 2.   These are the basic foam blocks cut to the correct size. now the aerofoil templates are to be fixed to the sides for cutting the aerofoin shape.

Happy Flying
