Title: The Telink SU-29 EPP foamy
Post by: anwar on December 18, 2010, 07:19:18 PM
We had picked up this EPP model from our last trip to Dubai, from Ultimate Heli.

http://www.telink.eu/en-detail-99903-su-29.html

They had a bunch of Telink EPP models, including fling wings (I have one yet to be built).

The quality of the foam is great and the price is also pretty good.  The fuse is thick, like 20mm foam, and wing is also similar thickness with precision cut airfoil shape. The tail bits and control surfaces are like 8mm thickness (did not measure accurately).

On the flip side, the quality of supplied hardware is average (especially the linkage rods), and the manual with build instructions is sorely lacking.

I powered it with a TowerPro 25A/9x4.7 motor/ESC combo, and 1000mAH 25C Turnigy 3s lipos.  The power is great, and peak load pulled at WOT is 22A (which is close to 25A, but then at full throttle it feels like a rocket on 9x4.7 prop in static tests, and would hardly ever be used). All build was done using 5 minute epoxy, including the control horns.

Maiden was done using a 10x4.7 prop (which I had put on by mistake), and it was cutting out at high throttle, did not test on the field with the 9x4.7 yet.  Bt it is yet another reminder that props have to be carefully chosen, and even one higher in specs can cause the amps to shoot up.

Pictures, detailed flight report with the 9x4.7 prop,  and video(s) coming soon.

PS: It is a brand that LHSes can consider carrying, if it can be sourced at good rates.

The plane is too small in some parts of the video, so definitely watch in full screen mode.  HD will help, if you can !

You can see the how EPP can stand "issues", including a bad landing in the middle, and how it is caught at the very end of the video.

great vid, can it hover ? how do we get it in india ?

Sure it can hover, I realized that I had messed up the control horn setup on the elevator (due to bad instructions supplied with the kit, but I should have been more careful), because of which I have difference in throws between the two sides, and less than the required throw for bailing out in hovering.  Need to pull out the horn and fix it, or just cut it off, and fix one of my own.

Not sure if it is in India, you can try contacting Ultimate Heli, or have any friends who travel to Dubai carry it for you.  Shipping from the shop in Europe will be expensive in terms of shipping.  I wish some local stores carried this, or the Hacker models (Super Zoom, Zoom 4U etc).

Gave this plane to a beginner on our field, who has been trying to learn with an AXN type of plane.  I set the rates to 50% on ailerons, 65% on elevator and with -50 expo (Futaba style) on both ailerons and elevators.  He was able to fly this full 3D plane like a trainer with this setup, including landing it multiple times with grace !

I am totally convinced now that these EPP 3D ones can make pretty good trainers, as long as the controls are toned down.

I don't go to Dubai that often ;)  Hopefully you have contacts who make trips there !

Someone here wanted one, and when we looked on the Telink site, the shipping charges were quite high :(  Wonder why HK does not have a "thick EPP fuse" plane yet (or is there one which I missed) ?

Someone at the field cloned this one with 15mm and 9mm EPP sheets he got from Grayson Hobby

With his spray painting job, including custom lettering using stenciled out paper masks, it looked and flew awesome !  {:)}
