Title: Ugly Stick 1m - Build log
Post by: K K Iyer on January 19, 2024, 01:37:41 PM
Hi everyone,

Last week someone asked me to build him an electric powered 1m Piper Cub in balsa.

But before I could start, he said 'No, No, build me an Ugly Stick instead'!

So I started this build.
No kit, no laser cutting. Just old fashioned #11 blade and sheets and sheets of balsa.
When I scratch build, I really start from scratch!

So cut a rib blank, drew the ribs nested close together to fit on one sheet.
The ribs turned out quite identical.

I like D Tube wings for their strength and rigidity.

So made a full depth spar, with half depth cuts. Ribs had the other half depth cuts.
Fitted the ribs to the spar egg crate style, but didn't glue them just yet.
Glued the ribs to the bottom trailing edge sheet, ensuring that they were all parallel and square to the TE.
And that the 90degree cuts in the ribs for the 1/4" square leading edge were aligned.
This needs some careful work!
Added LE and LE sheeting, then glued the ribs to the spar.

I've found that tail parts of solid sheet often turn out heavy, needing nose ballast to balance.
So this time I tried a different method.
Internal structure in 2mm covered with 1mm sheet on both sides.
Feels lighter and stiffer than flat sheet.

Ribs are 1.5mm. Cap strips of 1.5x3mm (1/16x1/8") being added.

I love the Stik family. Made lots of them in Corro - only 1 in balsa (from a HK laser cut kit)

True scratch building is great

Got back to the build after a gap of a few days.

Fuselage is now taking shape.

Ah, that's my 14 year old Golu, still investigating my work!

Woodwork all done. 300gms..
Hardware - motor, prop, Esc, 4 metal gear 12gm servos, undercarriage and wheels - 275gms.
Say 50gms for covering.
625 gms PLUS LIPO.

So it will end up a little heavier than my similar size Royal Coachman with OS 10LA.

Am going to install a Turnigy 2830 1000kv and 10x6 prop.
It's specs say 890gms thrust. We'll see...

Thanks, but Photos are flattering.

In reality the workmanship and finish are only of 'acceptable' quality, not really top class.

At 71, I wonder whether my skills are getting better or worse   ???

Thanks, but it came out quite tail heavy.
So thinking of moving the motor and battery forward by lengthening the nose an inch.

Second flight. Strong wind, see windsock.
Went way downwind, lost orientation, lost control, lost the model.
My camera person/ copilot/ spotter wife always yells instructions to me when I'm flying farther than I  can see. Too late this time.
Two hours of wading through 3 foot high wheat proved fruitless.
Waited 7 hours for wind to die down enough for aerial search.

Seven hours after I lost the Ugly Stick, the wind slowed enough for an aerial search.
Courtesy my friend the pilot.
He and his wife even gave us lunch as we sat around waiting  all day long...
No luck though.

need to do the aerial search at noon time, becase the shadows would mask the plane in the evening so they would not be able to locate it ,   your loss  reminds me of a time when i Lost a 6 channel helicopter downwind, it simply would not come back against the wind, and in a few seconds it went out of my visible range , thats why I nowadays try to always fly against the wind , never downwind
