Title: Why people have very less to discuss on EDF RC planes ?
Post by: SantoshHyderabad on February 04, 2014, 10:00:49 PM
Hi to all,  I have gone through most of the recent posts but to my surprise I couldn't find even one proper post on EDF fighter planes as the attached ones. Most of the posts are either related to  SPORT / AEROBATICS RC MODELS or Gliders / Sailplanes RC models. I find these EDF jets more beautiful and attractive than the other type of planes. Hardly any videos by anyone in YouTube.

Is the price of these EDF Planes so high and not affordable to RC enthusiasts?
Is that so hard and messy to import those planes from a foreign vendor?
Or people really are not much interested  in these beautiful planes?

Regards
Santosh

Aren't they supposed to be really difficult to fly?

difficult may not be but need good flying skill especially in maintaining the flight envelop.

What I found was that there was a space constraint in quite a few places, so people tend to be reluctant to fly those, and also EDF's so far tend to be all ready made foamies(cheap and reliable), however they are restricted to being small (36" or so) so it doesn't catch many peoples fancy.

Larger EDF's are usually scratch built out of balsa and ply or are ready made(they are notoriously expensive and rely on proprietary motors and fans making them even more unaffordable, $6000 or upwards )

Even the scratch built ones are fairly expensive but with the advent of 500-600 USD Fans and motors it is definitely catching on, but the sheer skill required to build an EDF model outweighs the enjoyment one would get from flying it for many people.

EDF Jets are easy to own and easy to buy and not so difficult to fly too; Entry level EDF Jets are cheap too.... but we didnt find  any discussion on electric Jets because for a very simple reason which I see...Majority of us here dont have an access to a neat flying strip.

electric EDF Jets are vacuum cleaners types and sucks everything in them!!! so if you dont have a neat & clean runway you cant take off an edf jet. My personal expericne, I tried once my edf and it sucked small grass & stones breaking its edf fins. It happened every time i tried.

Last resort is hand launch.. but possible only with smaller models.

This is unique situation with Electric ones. (I am not sure about turbines)

Absolutely. I can agree with you no more on that.

what if a dirt guard is put up like a metallic mesh ?

@ chintal , if we put dirt guard , the stones and grass would come on the dirt guard and block it and the air would not be able to be sucked , then if the motor is not able to suck air , it would take more amps , produce more heat and could possibly burn the esc , all because of suction .

Well the viberation produced would throw away the rocks and stuff back it wont be stuck on the edf
As u will get very rarely a full blockage if the mesh is not cleaned regularly
And it happens only while take off and landing not all the time

I'm talking about take off and landings only , I have an edf plane , the suction created by an edf plane can also suck your finger in , not joking

The vibration in edf planes is very low of course because of the duct fan only , it would not be able to remove small stones and grass.

Well i have tried this with mesh guard
With a vacuum cleaner and it practically wont block the edf
U can try ut with ur edf

It actually depends , on the kind of ground you run it on , if there's a ground , which has a lot stuff like Cups , plastic bags , a lot of grass and stones , your guard would be blocked but if ou run it on a clear ground , you would have a sucessful takeoff

well the question was
one or two rocks might hit the edf blades and destroy it
so what can be done to save it from that
other then that
if you have a ground with all that lying around
how will you take off ?
you will end up with a plastic bag or a thread or some or the other stuff stuck in the wheels of ur plane

Yeah , what you're are saying is right , we totally changed the question

well parts too,are not happily available especially motors and edf units

I agree with you that there is a problem with dust and stones while takeoff and landing..... but still the medium size i.e.36 inch foamie EDF jets are quiet lighter in weight ..thats around 700-1000 gms and can easily takeoff by hand... as done for most ARF glider planes kits available . and yeah  problem for landing.... but we fly far off from city ...I think  we can find a lonely road somewhere... perhaps we have to get rid of dirt...

There is an ad on top of this page..."pay less fly more..."
