Title: Homemade EDF
Post by: iamahuman on June 22, 2010, 11:36:47 PM
Guys,I wanted to make an EDF for the science fair at my school.I will be using an outrunner from the multiplex easy star I will be getting.I just wanted to ask what the 'consequences 'would be if I used a:
1)Computer cooling fan
2)Propeller
And yeah,the radio and the battery and the ESC will be from the plane.

And the whole mechanism will be mounted in a PVC pipe and the nozzle will be made with a plastic bottle.I want it look as 'made from scratch as possible' and I just want enough thrust to show the judges.

If an EDF seems too illogical,please suggest something I can do.

1. The speed would be much too high for the computer fan , I would think.
2. What "propellor" are you intending to use? Can't think of anything small enough for this application.
3. What are the guidelines for the project?

hi,

you can buy a edf from ebay @ USD 5, that being the best option if you use high power motor from your plane.

Creating the same power through homemade EDF should have some major challenges.

I have seen that the CPU fan also resembels a EDF, so you can possibly try that but again it will not be able to handle raw power from your motor.

@sushil-anand
1)So,the computer fan is out of the question?Will it like rip off the main assembly and fly off? ;D
2)I was thinking of a propeller with less diameter but with blades angled the most like a computer fan.If 'angled'is not the right term,do let me know.
3)The major guidelines are ,preferably low cost and as scratch made as possible.
@hangingtough
Because of the scratch made part,I would prefer to make it on my own.
And yeah,open to all,
1)What is the risk factor if I do use a computer fan?
2)Is ther eanything else I can do with a brushless motor?If the EDF is not possible,can you suggest something else?
