Connecting a motor direct to a battery for 2 seconds and it smokes, does this mean that it is fully destroyed?? Any hope of working again?

What do you mean by smoke??
Does it become very hot?? or You saw smoke comming out of it???

Either way the motor is not safe to use. :'(

1.When it becomes hot the enamel insulating coating on the coils would have evaporated or damaged and can act as short circuit and the performance is not reliable.
2.when you see smoke...just be sure you have burnt your money... :giggle:

1st- Which type of motor is it? Brushless or brushed
2nd- Did you not use a speed controller(ESC) if it was brushed?
3rd- What type of battery is this? and what voltage?
If possible please post some pictures of the motor etc.

And please(this goes out to everyone) don't post vague information and then ask for help etc. Provide complete, correct, sensible information which we can atleast grasp!

Surely you connect brushless motor with battery. these motors are basically 3 phase synchronous motor and needs AC for operation. Electronic Speed controller (ESC) does just DC to required 3 phase AC with required frequency and pulse width as per signal from Receiver/servo tester/ similar pulsed signal injecter). You can rewind the motor, but before doing everything needed, just go through our earlier posts.

Hope it will enlighten you more in this electric field of RC.
We have to unite and to prove ourself to make indigenous products as well as marketing / Canvasing them. I'm sure we must achieve success if we try unitedly.

Yes,there was a little smoke, and it also became very hot..

Shyam Hembram

It was a brushless motor.

even my motor gave a little smoke once,
but its still working.
If yours doesn't work then you can rewind it.

Shyam Hembram

It was a odin 1500kv motor from Rcbazaar, wolfpack battery 11.1V,30C,1800mah,and  was nearly connected for  2 seconds

Did you or did you not use an ESC? ???

From his descrition it appears....NOT  Smoking is sure bad for the health  ;D

Shyam Hembram

I dint use any esc and was out for a test with  11.1v battery.
And how to rewind it??

sanjayrai55

Do you need to rewind? Maybe it's still OK. Connect it properly, through an ESC and re-check it

prateek13

So you say that you DID NOT use an ESC!??
:salute: :giggle: ;D

Motor- RIP!

@sanjay-  :iagree:

The problem was that i  had no esc,and is scheduled to reach today from Rcbharat.

If it wont work then how to rewind it,can anybody suggest?

there are many motor rewinding post on this forum.
search is ur friend..

@Shyam- is this the first time you are handling a brushless motor, have you flown RC planes before(electric) or are you a Beginner?

when i was out.. my brother wanted to see if the motor was working.. so he connected it directly to the lipo battery..  :banghead: he said smoke came out of it and he removed it as soon as possible.. when i checked it was still hot..   >:(
does this mean the motor has been damaged and it couldn't be used again.?  ???
i have attached a pic of my motor and battery also.. check it out..

theleabres

Test the motor.  Does it run at all, is it smooth running?  It's also possible smoke came from the battery.

Merged into the existing thread on similar issue.

Please search and post in the right threads. If you had just searched for "motor smoke", you would have found this and other useful threads.

Im new to this forum sir.
Sorry for that.

Saif Ansari

@theleabres
i dint connect it to the esc yet!!
if the motor is damaged it cud damage the esc as well rite..
so how should i test it ?? and when i just spin it, its spinning smoothly..

theleabres

Connect it to the ESC.  It won't damage the ESC.  Is there a burn smell?  Are any of the wires melted?  There's no chance it will damage the ESC if it has heat damage only.  However, if it's a homemade rewind job, I can't guarantee no damage.  I've connected known burnt out motors to different ESCs with no issues to the ESC, only confirms the motor damage.

Saif Ansari

yeah there was a burnt smell.. and also smoke was coming out of it.. i dont know if there any melted wires yet..
and what is a homemade rewind job??

theleabres

When the motor is new in the packaging, that is called factory stock or as came from the factory.  Some hobbyists know how to make an old brushless motor new by disassemblying it and taking out the old copper wire and "rewinding" the motor with new copper wire.  That is called homemade rewind.
They say it gives it more power than when it was new.  There are many videos of this process on Youtube.
