i have connected a jst plug to accept external 3s lipos , but you can use the AA's as well .  
also theres no BATTERY MODE setting for this transmitter like many out there has, all it does is when the voltage drops beyond the set limit, it'll beep.
i've never gone below 12V . i used an external home made 4400mah Li Ion pack with this and it gave me forever of flight time.
