CONTEST GUIDELINES

1. This is DURATION contest for hand launch gliders (HLGs) and catapult launch gliders (CLGs). Propulsion is limited to muscle or rubber band power.

2. Highest duration achieved and video posted here by closing date wins.

3. To emphasise flying, (rather than design, material, construction etc), and to provide a level playing field, this is a ONE DESIGN contest.

4. The model is the Lunchbox, designed in 1975 by John Oldenkamp, a well known American modeller. Selected for its simplicity and ability to easily do 10 seconds from a hand launch.

5. Since access to balsa is a major obstacle, kits are being made available. The kit has everything needed to complete assembly in a few minutes.

6. If you don't need the kit, and want to build it from scratch, the plan is available on Outerzone.co.uk

https://outerzone.co.uk/download_file.asp?planID=11309&FileType=Plan&Filename=Lunchbox_oz11309.pdf

7. If you wish to enter some other design, limit wingspan to 8 inches, and length to 10.5 inches.

8. CONTEST CLOSES 9pm on 30th Nov. Videos to by uploaded by then.

9. Prizes Rs 1000, 750, 500 and 250 for longest 4 flights.
Minimum eligible duration is 10 seconds for HLG and 20 seconds for CLG

10. Since CLGs can easily achieve twice the launch height of HLGs, duration of HLG flight will be multiplied by 2. I.e, a 10 second HLG flight will be treated as equal to a 20 second CLG flight.

11. Since the prize kitty has to be generated (mainly) from entries, participants have to contribute Rs 250 per entry.

12. Cost of kit is Rs 200+ 50 postage. So 500 with kit, 250 without kit.

13. PM me your entry confirmation and address if you need the kit. I'll send bank details.

Post queries regarding the contest in this thread.
Post queries regarding the model in the '2nd Chuck - Lunchbox' thread.

Hope Speedpost can deliver the kits by 30th Oct.

Gentlemen and Ladies, start your engines!

5 kits are ready!

Enter 'Lunchbox'

Thanks to R C GUY for pointing out the error

Sir in my previous post I had shared a video of a standard paper airplane launcher which use two rotating wheels in contct and launches the plane placed between them. Can I use these? If so will I be under CLG category?

Despatch of kits delayed by a day or two, as I decided to give the models a coat of dope, as recommended in the original article. Something that participants except sanjayrai55 may not have at hand.

You have read the Sep 1975 Model Airplane News article available on Outerzone, haven't you?  :)

SI74

Yes, read .Thanks for the finishes . I don't have it .

Can we reduce the entry fee to attract more participation ?

Just a thought

Just a thought

The prize money is already too low to really motivate participation, it's only a token.
5000 for 10 seconds produced a result in 24 hours, after years of no response to 1000 prize.

Attractive prize money with low entry fee is only possible with a sponsor to foot the bill.

The economics so far is like this:
4 confirmed entries @500 and one @ 250 (non competitor, only kit)
So 2250 for 5 kits.
4 prizes and only 4 contestants, so everyone wins.
Income 2250, outgo 2500 for prizes and 250 for 5 kits postage.
Net outgo 500 + 5 kits free.

Not sustainable. I'm doing it out of my desire to promote some grassroots level activity.

Let me know if you can think of an alternative

sir, your efforts are appreciable   {:)}  :salute:
Truly speaking I haven't  made a chuckglider myself, I just jumped in for the challenge of constructing and flying our own creation.

I have felt that joy, when I have flown tow-line gliders,  control line models and even radio controlled models after constructing them from kits.

As such I don't have any alternative but aero-modellers who are interested to challenge themselves by constructing and flying their own model will surely give it a thought.

I would request all the forum members and visitors surfing this website to come forward and give a good competition or sponsorship

Thank you

K K Iyer

Suppose I started a one design towline glider contest for a simple, reliable design like the Mercury Gnome.

How many entries do you think I'd get?

My estimate is Zero.

Next year I'll try to think of something new...

Does it mean that this contest is over ?
