Title: RC India 4th anniversary sweepstakes
Post by: anwar on February 15, 2013, 12:53:18 PM
This forum will be 4 years old on 9th March (that is the date the domain was registered!).  In an effort to thank all the members who are active on this forum, we will be having another sweepstakes for a Futaba 7C radio system.  It is a used one, but works great.  The only issue is that the charger is 110V (US standard), so the winner will need to get a 220V to 110V convertor (which was less than Rs.50 last time I checked).

The rules of the sweepstakes is simple.  It is not just a random draw from people who post on the forum, but this time we want to promote the builders amongst us :)  So you have to build or assemble a new RC plane/heli/car/boat/multirotor/etc between today and April 7th, to be eligible.  To confirm that the build is recent, you have to take pictures videos that has identifying information in the pictures (like current newspaper as background, or TV news in videos).  A few of these is needed to show the progress of the build, if the build spans multiple days.  Assembling an ARF or heli is just fine, but it has to be something that you start putting together from scratch.

Once you are done, please post a link to your build/assemble thread in this thread, to demonstrate your interest in taking part in this sweepstakes.

Additional Note 1:  Anyone who does a scratch/plan build of airplanes will be listed thrice in the list from which the draw will be done. That will increase his chances of winning.

Additional Note 2:  The deadline date for submission of build thread is extended to April 7th, and winners will be announced on April 9th.

Additional Note 3:  With the generous donations from members, we will have 3 sets of prices instead of just the 7C.  Please see later in the thread for details.

Wonderful, Anwar! Who is the generous donor?

It came out of funds from the Google Ads on this site.  So self paid.  Did not make enough to buy a new one :giggle:

Absolutely, your creation is one of a kind, and qualifies for automatic admission ;)  But please do express your interest (if any) towards early march by posting current status of the project on this thread.

I thought I made it clear that even putting together ARFs are just fine.  So pre-cut depron definitely qualifies.

What does not qualify is taking wings off a Sky Surfer, and putting it back together :giggle:

It has to be significant :)

The idea was to kick people into building something new.  I allowed Girish's project as an exception, because that is what it is... it is a wonderful/worthwhile exception.

PS: Please avoid the "sir" part.  "Anwar" alone is great, and "bhai" is fine too.

Anwar bhai, many thanks...
To remove ambiguity,  I will start from scratch, on a beefier one this time.

The rewards are exciting and much more exciting is to be doing this for the community

Whow, Grate effort. Next year, we have to give chalk and slate for 5 YEARS.
4 is the tricky no. 2+2 and 2x2 gives 4. So, this year is the solving problem year,

Joking.

Anwar ,
Great initiative to encourage Scratch building actually have been seeing that aspect diminishing in the recent past .

So here is our addition to the RCI sweek stake :
Power system to power the winners scrath built aircraft
1) I flight 2212/13 or 10 ( 1000/1400 KV ) Motor http://rc4all.co.in/product_info.php?products_id=110
2) ESC 20 amps http://rc4all.co.in/product_info.php?cPath=3&products_id=38
3) GWS props : 2 pcs either 9050 or 8040
4) Gens Ace Battery : (http://rc4all.co.in/product_info.php?cPath=21_127&products_id=612 )
5) Charger : http://rc4all.co.in/product_info.php?cPath=36&products_id=538
Servos :
RCFORALL 9 gms : 3 pcs ( http://rc4all.co.in/product_info.php?cPath=22_39&products_id=82 )

With your Radio offer and these parts I think the entire kit will be complete for any 4 channel foamy plane which is normally where the scratch building happens .

BTW CHECK OUT SOME OF OUR NEW PRICES MAY FIND THEM INTERESTING  sai

Anwar bhai, I will surely post the status on this thread about early march.

PS: Many thanks Gusty sir for the PS. He is already glued to the sim, and looking at his 'supposedly acrobatic' performance on the sim, I don't dare bringing anything real close to him...And he thinks a field is to play, not to fly planes...

Awww, I have a balsa/ply Big Stick (no plans :) only instruction sheet) but I don't think I can complete it in time. Half my build time goes in repair

I do have a FunCub ARF which I can complete though

What a wonderful initiative....thanks Anwar and LHS (this means other LHS are awaited to put in their bit  ;D)

QuoteSo you have to build or assemble a new RC plane/heli/car/boat/multirotor/etc between today and March 8th, to be eligible.

What is the criteria for completion? Does the model have to be ready for take-off?

In that case, I realized later that the person knows a distant cousin of mine who settled in Bangalore.  That was a genuine case, where joining the forum was caused by seeing some RC stuff in malls.

What they do later on is not our problem in a strict sense... while admitting that taking RC up long term would be satisfying to watch/know.

This time, I hope the rules are sufficient to ensure a different outcome, at least some prior effort is needed.

Thank you all for the great response. The pleasure of giving something away is one of the most wonderful feelings in life :)

Specifically, I appreciate the offers from Gusty bhai, Sujju/RCBaazar and Sai/RCForAll. I feel that it makes sense to pick 3 different winners this time, where the Futaba TX set + Gusty's receiver will go to the first winner, the PT-20 Ryan kit will go to another, and the electric setup from RCForAll will go to yet another person.  That way more people can enjoy/benefit from this occasion, and hopefully contribute even more to RC (and to this forum).

That is my expectation. But if you are building a scale kit or a balsa model from scratch or a transmitter from scratch etc, there will be exceptions.  In any case, you have to demonstrate reasonable progress over this period, with evidence.

I hate being in this position, but I will have to make that call on what is "reasonable progress".

[Admin Note] Unnecessary "Quote" removed... use "Reply" instead... See usage guidelines : http://www.rcindia.org/rc-india-forum/forum-usage-tips/

Heartiest Congratulations and best wishes for the 4th Anniversary...  {:)}
I have a suggestion; Since RC Boat making does not seem to be as popular as RC Aero modelling in India, I suggest extending the multiple listing offer for RC water craft builders too... and, maybe, for those too who can make best use of domestic or office or toy junk/ waste to create interesting functional RC water craft models. Designing and commissioning a RC water craft (includes hovercrafts, boats, frigates, ships, cruise ships, tugs trawlers) I am a water craft enthusiast, with a fleet of functioning RC boats up my sleeves, and I know designing a water craft is not really a cake walk when it requires quite a bit of imagination thinking and balancing skill.... more so when floating is the concept and it is not as common as it is amongst RC aero modelling enthusiasts...)
Just a suggestion... cheers

May I request all members / modellers to use the word/s 'Scratch' and 'Scratch Building' with a wee bit of caution and a lot of reverence. There is 'Building from a plan' and there is 'Assembling a kit - RTF / ARF', 'Kit bashing'  and there also exists, on a totally different platform, 'Scratch Building'.

Scratch building essentially means working from pictures, photographs, line diagrams etc, without taking the help of a published / available build plan and building the model out of conventional / non conventional modelling supplies and equipment. This type of modelling is again is classified into 'Non Scale', 'Semi - Scale' and finally, the most exalted, 'True Scale Scratch Building'. The latter is seldom, if ever,  seen on this forum. The difference between Non/Semi scale Scratchbuilts and True Scale Scratchbuilts is that of chalk and cheese in terms of research, effort and international acceptance.

I hope I have ruffled some feathers.

Agree with VC.The distinction is important.  A simple prefix in the build title should help. However, I do feel it should not bias any participation criteria or judgement.Everyone's effort is to be counted. Spad and balsa alike. A liberal view, on everyone's skill level, should be enough for one's participation. Kit bashing too requires a lot of skill on mix n match. I hope I've put my opinion in the right perspective.   :). Although the rewards are lucrative, I feel most of us are doing this for that achievement factor

Update: typo/toucho

The rules are very clear within the first post itself, with added clarification in the subsequent few posts.

BTW, what exactly is a scratch built heli ?  It would make a lot more sense if you post your build thread, then ask whether it qualifies.

I was skeptical about organizing the sweepstakes this way when I started off.  But seeing how the RC India community has responded, I am absolutely thrilled about this choice, and I wanted to thank everyone for participating.  Glad to see so many builds, especially the scratch/plan ones.

Thanks to everyone who is participating, and wish you all good luck

PS: Please do make the dates clear on newspaper articles.  I would like the whole thing to be fair and transparent, as much as possible.

Just added this to the original post :

"Additional Note 1:  Anyone who does a scratch/plan build of airplanes will be listed thrice in the list from which the draw will be done. That will increase his chances of winning."

I had decided to ignore this thread, but it seems to be rather lucrative now. >:D

I have a few questions :

1. If one were to build a scale boat model (30" length +) based on an available plan, what would be weightage? How many times would you list that?

2. What about anyone who does a scratch SCALE BUILD WITHOUT plans build of a Cabin Cruiser boat (36" +) ? Will you list it 6 times? ???

3. What about a Hexacopter with a camera ( camera footage will be supplied as proof)  based upon NO plans / PURE scratch build? What weightage would you give to that?

4. If  person achieved all 3 of the above ,within the stipulated time, would you still call for a draw (lucky draw) of lots or would you award him the prizes?

What I want to know is that is this award based only on Luck or do Skill and Effort have a part to play? Please don't be diplomatic in your answer - if you answer at all Mr. Administrator.

Regards.

I think only 2 filter is here.

1. If he can make RC craft that perform (Can participate)
If yes, he can take ticket of this lottery.
2. If he can make target output taking decision which plan to build? What model? .....
If yes, he can get 3 ticket.

But I an worried about If I open up a complete plane, picture ref. for start, assemble, then paint/color.

... OR...

Take a few snaps for making a clone during midpath and then take snaps of disambled of earlier plane and then post. (In fact 1 complete pre built and one half complete merged in between time scale.)

Tough for the decision maker. Specially when our picture up-loader reduce original image and reduce clarity. Remember, all are making and taking snaps, But the judgement day is vital for posters.

What will be if I made and cannot fly at last day due to weather ?
Everything has some drawback and advantages. I think you have not forgotten about the model boat forum www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk case. That is why Anwar sir takes the total responsibility of his own. Special detectives appointed, coolers added (cool head is a must for Model makers).

Let us SWEAR that we will not cheat with our beloved forum

And anwar sir, please mention the date ref. request in this thread as if any of build thread later checked by outer world, they can either confuse or mis-judge. I think referring the thread to here may be the best option.

Roman, I think you are over-reacting. All you have to do (as Mr. Anwar has stated very clearly and lucidly) is to take a picture with date proof at the time of starting, clearly showing all the parts. Then, just a few dated pictures during assembly.

Basically this is to avoid anyone who wants to "tweak the rules" a bit, and show something already built, which would be absolutely against the spirit of the contest.

These rules were made adequately transparent right at the beginning, and we should all respect them.

Whereas I have no doubt that you are certainly on the level, due process must be followed, or the Admin, who already has an unenviable job going through all the entries in detail, will certainly be unable to make any sort of impartial ruling.

Why don't you put together another model: there is still plenty of time?

Good luck

Sanjay

I think the rules are clear in the very first thread itself, and any further clarification in my replies to couple of people who asked questions initially here.

This contest started off with no prominence for skill, otherwise what is the justification in allowing ARFs ?  My thought was that there are people have bought ARFs/kits/depron etc and have all the pieces laying around, but just did not get motivated enough to get start on building those. Let this sweepstakes kick them in to action !

I tried to give skill/effort an advantage by the 3x entries boost.

Look at it this way, if you can scratch/plan build 4 different aircrafts (which is certainly possible because "plan builds" are included), then you have 12x advantage over someone who is just building one ARF. Isn't that enough encouragement for the effort ?

I will accept the one where the servo on the elevator is not connected.

But we certainly want to highlight the need for "demonstrating progress" to everyone.  And showing the initial stage (the pieces "unconnected") does play an important part.

Please note that we are visible internationally AND THAT WE ARE A MODELLING FORUM, hence this post.

May I request members to PLEASE learn the definition of "SCRATCH" building? It means building a model from available scraps/pieces/resources from available  photographs / statistics only - you can't just download a plan and build a plane/boat/car/vehicle out of depron / balsa / wahtever and call it a TRUE SCRATCH BUILD. Scratch build means NO PLANS At ALL! If you are building from a plan, it is classified as a PLAN Build.

If in doubt, check Roopesh's builds - 100% GENUINE SCRATCH BUILDS. Are they accurately built to SCALE?  - That is a different question entirely and is NOT relevant to this contest.

PLEASE read reply # 53 on this thread. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Cheers!

Board exam for Students, March ends for professionals (Specially Govt. officer and related 2-3 stage private personnel too..)
Now all included.

Retired persons are happy as they have no exam or march ending pressure.

Now the lottery become on quantity of builds. Hurry up man.
Don't think that you can post in last day. Also post build threads too from the starting day to avoid server problem, Net down etc.

HURRY UP. HURRY UP.
You can build monoplane, bi-plane, tri plane, small to large size, white, yellow to red.
Now it's all depend on quantity. Just maka the plane, Post. Create another one. :hatsoff:

I really don't understand the idea behind making 2 models and getting 2 tickets. Given the duration to 9th April , Some can make just more than one and gain huge advantage. If you can make 3 scratch build , 9 tickets earned !!!!

The problem is many are skilled and equally qualified but may not find enough time to build so many !!

I believe the whole idea of the process of competition was to invite large scale active participation from forum members towards the celebration of anniversary of the forum. Winning and loosing be there may be a focus for the individual participants, giving more time for a wholesome active participation form all segments of the member population is very much warranted.  :hatsoff:

Making more models may increase the winning percentage but the thing is that the one who is luckiest among us will win the Title..
Many of them may build more than 3-4 models to get more tickets.. And finally the winner may be the one who make only one plane. So Dont be upset with the conditions, rules or anything make your model and wait for the day :) believe in your luck.. All the best ;)

Here the participant is only my son PARAM though largely supported with my help, we are competing exclusively for him to compete and for only one of the prizes, that is RC Bazaar PT-20 Ryan KIT.

We are decline remaining prizes. even if we win remaining any of the other prizes it will be gifted to deserving forum members along with the sole concurrence of the Admin and Admin only.

From my side the best micro build with a beautiful flight video by the deadline will be gifted with a Plantraco Tx Module External for conversion of any Tx compatible with a 900Mhz Plantraco system. Depending on the extra detailing, complexity, lesser AUW, true to real life look and flight performance of the wining build I might add many extras to go along with the winning prize which will go along specially for a micro build to include any or many or all of the following parts like motors, actuators, micro magnets, wire cut foam sheets, horns, 0.5mm carbon rod,  1-2 mm shrink tubes, single cell Lipos, 0.3mm horn quick couplings and IR Heli Circuit cards with IR Heli TX,. Depending on the quality of the build and the flight video, the extra parts added will be more. You may even find a used Plantraco Receiver. Shiva, Arun, I hope you guys are seeing this  :)

I am not sure if extending even more is a good idea.

After all, a simple foam build is a matter for 4 to 8 hours, which should fit well into the break time between various study sessions :)
Title: Re: RC India 4th anniversary sweepstakes

I have not requested till date, but in fact March ending goes upto 10April Max (As per RBI G.O.) and not more than that. And one week afterwords for making and testing will be enough for professionals. The worst thing is that in between study, one can make servo horn or glue parts, or measure coro plans, but in office (and home office too) we cannot do that for profession.
So, there are so many request from so many viewpoint. Let the Admin to chose for time extension Via PM and obey rule. Only post the build log thread here.

I am worried about the no of ticket by roopesh, Arun, Girish, Ujjwana.

So, the updated rule should be in 1st post of 1st Page. And follow that updated rule.

One query - even if we do not build a model our name will be in list for draw ??? (but only once)

I am not sure I understand the question/concern.  You have to build a model to participate, that is clear from the initial post itself.

OK GOTCHA..... only those who built model will be in lucky draw ......
but then I got confused by the statement that the people who make model their name will appear 3 times....

anyway are my pic ok now......?

Apparently you did not realize the requirement of difference between scratch/plan builds and others.

Seriously we need to note what is happening over the last few days. Everybody is so busy modelling in their spare time that they are not bothered about others posts and threads or reading carefully (Speaking for myself). Log in, post your pictures, log out. I guess when competition kicks in camaraderie takes a walk. As far as labels are concerned, my stand is very clear here under Reply # 12:

This is what I buit with motors, battery and remote/receiver from a couple to non-working toy micro helicopters. Though not a believer to begin with, the effort did pay-off, as I could make the plane take-off and fly about 20 meters.

WOW.... Great going Anwar. Sure missed being on the site. Have been just too busy to even access the net for browsing.
I started a build on a SPAD EDGE 540 in Feb but have not taken many photographs of the build. If I do so now and post my build thread, would I qualify for the sweepstakes?

If you start documenting it from now on (in a separate thread), I will include it based on how far along you are already.  If it is too far near completion, then it would be unfair.  The (self made) rules did say that it had to start after the competition started, but minor exceptions can be made in the spirit of our hobby.

But something that was done completely outside this window cannot be entertained.  After all, it takes about 4 to 8 hours of effort to build a foam plane, starting from nothing.  The aim of this competition is to coerce people into doing a build like that (i e, a brand new build if possible).

I hope you continue to understand this Idi Amin Dada for sticking to the rules as much as possible (or needed).

I am not able to upload the pictures of my progress with cessna 182. Since yesterday, I have been trying, but every time the progress of upload gets complete and it says "file size too large, maximum size for attachment is 200 kb". I could post one set of photos yesterday but since the second posts, it has started giving errors. I have used the same camera with the same resolution settings for yesterday's posts as all other previous posts. I think previously it used to convert my average 2 Mb file size to the required one. But now it is not doing so.
Could anybody help?
Title: Re: RC India 4th anniversary sweepstakes
Post by: anwar on March 12, 2013, 02:08:24 AM
The error is self explanatory.  The forum will accept only files less than 200KB.  So the solution is to resize, or save with slightly lower JPG quality.  There are many tools already discussed which can do this which are already discussed here (like http://webresizer.com or programs like IrfanView).

The size of compressed images (like JPGs) is not constant based on "same resolution settings", it depends on how much "variation" (or "diverse information" content) there is in the image.  Try taking a picture of a white wall as a JPG, and then do the same for a normal scene (with many objects), compare the sizes and you will see.

Anwar sir my entry for the sweepstakes (sorry for the late upload)
Please do point out any suggestions or queries you have about my build

It's a scratchbuild from the ground up (Did all the calculations myself)

http://www.rcindia.org/self-designed-diy-and-college-projects/scratchbuilt-cargo-plane-(tested-carrying-a-load-of-650-grams)/msg134467/#msg134467

In some very lucky case that i am rewarded for my efforts i would love to get the transmitter, as i dont have one on my own, (I borrow a cheap flysky it from a senior of mine who is there in the club)

But i would love to get anything however small will be very helpful and appreciated

My situation is worst. Completed my Sub-Division work on 6th night (Better 7th Early evening). Make 18" wingspan Coro glider (AUW<120 gm, with 20watt motor) for micro build. But the pictures in Digicam as well as from mobile cannot post as afternoon have to go to Division office, but the USB cord betrayed. Again at night my PC become down (OS crashed). What a co-incidence. While laptop connected, again the USB cord become bottleneck and cannot post. However now I am posting making an old computer operative from dusty clothing of Division office as march work is not over. Hope this night we can wind up the entire work and tomorrow can post the pictures and the build thread.
Thanks.

Rai Sahib, get well soon.

I guess I will have to withdraw too as I just couldn't bring myself to complete the boats in a slap dash manner. I've been spending too much time on the detailing and finishing. They are ready to sail, right now, but they don't look like what I had envisaged them to be when I started them.

Hope it all pays off somewhere, some day.

All the luck to the others!

The point of the competition was to encourage members to build, in the finest tradition of the hobby.

That has been achieved.

The true reward is your build, and the satisfaction with it!

And, um, I'm not saying this because I withdrew from the competition

(I did complete and successfully maiden my Red Swan though)

I for one is very happy that the sweepstakes did take place, because my son after the brief exposure  is now busy with his independant build of the Gillows Fairchild. He has completed the wings, tail feathers, control surfaces and side walls of the fuse all by himself without even an iota of help from me. He has used some ingenious methods to get the structure together without coming in contact with CA  without using wax paper for the build.  Hats off to every child's creativity. Quality of finish may be desirable but the integrity and accuracy of the build is perfect. I am just waiting for him to finish and asked him post his own build log.

Update...

First of all, I apologize :( From around the closing date of the sweepstakes, my schedule has been obscene with continuous travel. Just did not find enough time to sit and work on this all the way. It looks like the schedule will remain just as hectic for another 3 weeks at least.

So I am requesting the mods to compile me a list of members to take lots from, per my published rules.  Please send the list to me in private first.  Note that one of the rules that some one doing scratch/plan builds will get more chances to win per build, so you need to duplicate their names as many times.  I don't mind that one of the mods take the lead, work with others, and forward to me a final list for a final quick glance through and then picking the winners via random.org.

Again I am sorry it has gone down to this.  The only bright thing I see from all this travel was that I was at the KSC recently, and noticed that a lot of astronauts flew model airplanes.  Will post pictures later.

OK, found time to go through the list compiled by one of our admins, and then go into the builds in some detail.

And the winners are.....

1.  Winner of main prize (Futaba radio and extra receiver from Gusty) is :  RASTSAURABH

2.  Winner of prize sponsored by RC Bazaar (PT-20 Ryan Kit) is :  VMALIAKAL

3.  Winner of prize sponsored by RCForAll (Power system) is : RAJA_MASTANA

Congrats to the winners... and everyone who participated.

I apologize for the delay in announcing the results.  Also, there were couple of small prizes offered by members, which I have not included in the draw, we will keep them for the next time (if they are still available).  Special thanks to everyone who contributed prizes.

Winners... please email me your full contact address via PM.
