Aah,
Perhaps the prizes are too small!
Ok.Let's raise the stakes.
5000 for the first 20+sec flight by a hand launched chuck glider between now and midnight Sunday 26th
10000 for the first 30+sec flt by a hand launched chuck glider between now and midnight Sunday 26th
Any takers?

THIS CLOSES IN A FEW MINUTES.

The original contest is open till midnight 30th June.

mansel

Do u think this will fly for 10s +?

K K Iyer

@mansel,
Don't depend on opinion of others.
Experiment. And go by your own observations.
Did you try out your model?
Was it stable or went off to one side or the other?
How long did it fly?
How far did it go?
Does it have too much drag?
Can we build a less draggy model with depron?
Or even with disposable dinner plates?

a) For successful flight we need stability in (1) pitch (up/down), (2) yaw (straight flight forward) and (3) roll (ability to recover from one wing down)
Roll stability is provided by dihedral, which is absent on your model.

b) For duration, we need a clean, low drag design. Not thick wings, tail, fuselage.

Can you please see this thread?

Best wishes.

mansel

Thanks for your reply and advice.ill try to make it more aerodynamic,
And it flies straight, but only tried it indoors
Will try it outside tomorrow
And will try to add dihedral...
Biu what do you think, for a beginner in gliders how does it look, considering i designed and sanded the wing(its not bent) and did not use any plans?

mansel

Check this out:
My old rc plane, electronics removed and converted to a glider.what do you think?

K K Iyer

Opinions can't add duration to your flight.
All you need is to exceed 10 seconds for the first prize.
Just try it yourself!
Can your models manage a 10+ sec flight?
You don't need opinions of others to check that.
Go ahead and fly.
In case you find they can't do even 10 seconds, you'll have to rethink your approach.
(Hint: Cleaner, slimmer models with a lot less drag. I've given you several pointers earlier, no?)

Best wishes

No entry yet...

Sir, Much as i would like to participate, i can't! I have got plans for the solar plane ready and i am confident that it will do over 5-6 minutes for SURE! However, my DGCA CPL papers are coming up in June end and after that, IndiGo selections in august...
I haven't flown a RC Plane in almost 2 years!
I just wish i could participate in all of the categories at the same time :(
ALL THE BEST to the other participant, that is, if there are any.......

mansel

Im in,but my model only flies for about 3-4s...will try harder

mansel

Any suggestions on a material to make the glider from, one which is easily available?
Please suggest one.

You could try depron, glass fibre covered thermocol, carbon fibre fuselage etc.
But the simplest is balsa.

Try whatever you have, till you cross 5 seconds. Then try balsa.

PRANAVK09

Sorry for delayed reply.
Will start building soon.
Did made some with balsa meanwhile

mansel

I just bought some foam for my glider..its like a thicker(8mm) version of styrofoam(the one used in disposable plates)can anyone please tell me what this foam is like what is it called?

Hi,
There's hardly any response and not a single entry.
But for those who may have missed the thread, and may be interested, here are the main points again. Closing date for posting videos is midnight 30th June.

Early Bird prize in each category for the FIRST member to post a video on RCI of a flight meeting/exceeding the minimum stipulated goal, flown during the contest period. The model may have been built earlier, but the flight must be on or after 4th April, ie, tomorrow onwards till 30th.

The prizes, categories and goals are:
1. Rs 1000 for the first 10+ second flight by a hand launch chuck glider
2. Rs 2000 for the first 20+ second flight by a hand/catapult launched glider
3. Rs 3000 for the first 60+ second by a rubber power/hand/catapult launch free flight mode
4. Rs 4000 for the first 120+ second flight by an RC/FF glider (50m towline or 10m rubber histart)
5. Rs 5000 for the first 120+ second flight with solar power motor/controls (no onboard battery)

Note that these goals are not hard to achieve! So newbies should try.

Happy to report that Saikat sir and ssk320 (Suman sir from the US) offered to co-sponsor.
So we have 2 additional prizes in each category.

After the Early Bird prize, equal prize to the two highest duration flights (in the category) with flight video posted on RCI by the deadline. The only condition is that the duration must exceed that of the Early Bird winner of that category.

Really sad to see this contest close without a single entry

Conclusion:
1. Prize money too low toattract interest
2. No one is interested in such stuff
3. THERE IS NO ONE IN INDIA WHO CAN PUT UP EVEN A 10 SECOND FLIGHT!

Very Nice effort Iyer sir.
Don't get disheartened.

Your motivation will surely help someone.
