Yes, it is THAT time of year ;) ;)
And, it will be a change from reading about buying and selling ;)

I was planning to build another quad soon anyway. Would be great if the sweepstakes happened to come around at the same time ;) ;D
All my planned models are now to be stopped.
Because the buzz of the upcoming sweepstakes has started 😃
Please keep the sweepstakes if its happening after the monsoons. Quite difficult to find time to maiden the models. Last time many of them including me faced the problem!
Agree with Himadri, August end might be a good time for all.
Ill be on a build frenzy.;D

Will there be a sweepstakes this year?
If anwar sir is busy, I would like to take the responsibility of organizing "RC India 7th Year Sweepstakes"
I will sponsor 10K worth of items purchase at RCHyper to one winner.
Interested LHS can sponsor something to the winners to make this sweepstakes more attractive.
However, Dear LHS
Please note we shall not force the participant to buy some item from our stores for the build.
Expecting response from anwar sir and my fellow LHS
Kumaran
Very good initiative {:)} {:)}
C'mon other LHS - rise to the occasion
Thank you sir,
Also, I am flexible to transfer my contribution of 10K to other PARTICIPATING LHS, if the winner wants that way.
For example if LHS X sponsors 10K and the winner want to buy from LHS X, I will transfer my 10K to LHS X so that the winner can shop at one LHS.
However, winner shall note that you can shop only at the participating LHS.
Also, LHS may sponsor some items too if you wish.
Kumaran
I am in too.
I can contribute 5-6K :)
Thank you satyaji.
Kumaran
I was hoping LHSs would take the initiative. The joy of participating and building is much greater than the prize amount.
Thank you guys!
I will gift a working RC plane (without electronics hardware) to an entrant who can do a local pick up. Winner to be decided by the judges

Great, i thought no one was interested in the sweepstakes this year. Instead of prize money type of competition, a competition where awards are given out will be just as good to initiate participation from members.
Its good to see the LHS'es taking initiative to host such competitions as they have already invested their time and effort for the growth of the hobby and this take it a step further. Thank you Kumaran sir and Satya sir :hatsoff:
All participating LHS please decide the dates of the competition.I am eager to start build logs just as other members.
Hope to see many builds in the 7th year competition
Oh great. I will try to build something too. Had one question though, will the judgement be still lottery based? Or would it be done on the basis of quality and innovation of the builds?
Please include a Indoor Free Flight category for the next sweepstakes too.

I too have this question.

The first point is this: only 2 of the not-so-old LHS so far (out of a desired 5-6) have agreed to sponsor. Unless more are forthcoming, there would appear to be no contest. RCB & RCD used to be significant contributors earlier.
The painful hard truth is that looking at this forum, it is now purely a place to buy and sell, ask about Customs issues etc. There is very little activity apart from that. Earlier there was an advertisement window, where I had once seen even Hobby King! Now, nothing. Earlier post a build, post a maiden, there would be 50 replies, now nothing much.
RC Modelling is alive and well in India. It's just that it's not happening here.
Many seniors have pointed this out before. And, too many seniors are no more active on the forum.
The last 2 sweepstakes were sponsored through advertising. Earlier, the bigger LHS had stepped up, offering attractive prizes. I remember once Gusty sir and Anwar-bhai among others had given personal contributions towards prizes (if I missed anyone else, my apologies)
Truth is: no participation, no modelling activities => no sponsorship
In any case, why do you need a sweepstakes to build?
The cash amount adds up to the motivation & enthu. and encourages to build, complete long pending models.
All - I have been swamped :(
What I suggest is that let someone like Iyer sir to drive the sweepstakes this time. I will contribute Rs10K towards prizes, and help out in any way I can.
With Facebook and Whatsapp groups around local fields being active, the activity decline on the forum is inevitable. But things like contests will put some enthusiasm back. Forums like this will also act as pan-India co-ordination point on the hobby.
Iyer sir ?
{:)} {:)}
Step up Iyer sir
I have no problem to transfer rchyper's contribuition of 10K to the organizer or as directed by him to any LHS

Iyer sir ?
Honoured to be asked. Honoured to accept.
Some issues need to be addressed though:
1. This project has to be FRIENDLY and FUN.
No acrimony.
Over the years I've offended members by my caustic or sarcastic remarks (though I hope I've apologised later, or did maun vrat for penance). So 3 nays before 30th Sep and I'm out. Then its back to Anwar sir.
2. Duration:
Last year it was about 3 months. This year we can consider 1st Oct to 31st Dec...
3. Many of us, including me, were debating with Anwar sir, the purpose of the sweepstakes, whether this is a competition or lottery etc. As far as i can make out, Anwar sir has used a system of weightages for entries, and then a lottery! Didn't quite satisfy me, but seems to work. So I suggest we continue it.
4. Details have been posted by Anwar sir in this very thread earlier. Will copy relevant posts here so you dont have to search. Meanwhile of course you can search and find them yourself!
5. Prizes are an incentive, no matter what we say. Can we build a pool of prize money contributions?
Should we have 2 prizes of 20k each, or say, 2 each of 10k, 5k, 2k, 1k etc? Should we have a trophy?
6. Is there something that we should encourage but haven't done so far?
Can we discuss everything on THIS thread till end Sep, so that from 1st Oct we have a new thread for RCI 2016 SWEEPSTAKES that has only entries, and no discussion/debates?
Regards.
"Is there something we should encourage"
I am a newbie on this forum so I don't know if it has been done before.
Suggest free flight indoor and outdoor duration be included.
Could be a single design event or lay down specs to be followed
@glidiator,
Sir, pl see pm.

Hey!
Great first response from a member. (Though amount not mentioned!)
"Could also probably make a modest sponsorship linked to a performance challenge."
Can we get commitments that add up to say Rs 1 lac?
Then we can decide - a few large prizes, or many of smaller amounts...
Come on, potential sponsors. Already crossed 25k.
In chronological order:
10k Vibranthobbies
5k Quadkopters
?? Free airframe, sanjayrai55
10k Idi Amin
?? 'Modest contribution linked to a performance challenge'
Addn:
6k Non RC. Same sponsor as last year. First achievers only please!
(2k for 2 minute rubber powered. 2k for 2 minute glider (50m towline / 10m histart), 2k for 1min HLG)
I will offer an airframe. But it will not be possible to ship, so local collection only
I have many ready models, so will offer The Chosen One a choice at that time :)
Is it possible to introduce some new way for selection of winners by scrapping lottery based system? Lottery based system always seems to be unjustified .
Dear KK
With regards to the non RC my understanding of your post:
It is a race to hit the 2 min mark first and not who gets the longest duration in the event timeframe

Sir, a possibility not foreseen! However quite unlikely.
Last year the FF prizes were offered to encourage low budget scratch builds, but there were only 5-6 entries. A not too hard goal of 1 minute was set (partly because one young member wrote that it was
impossible!). In the end even the winners couldn't quite reach the goal...
Maybe the incentive was inadequate. Raised now, but so have the goals. More than 10 entries would be a pleasant surprise. As people who have surpassed such levels long ago (read old timers) will know, these goals are not exactly easy, but far from impossible! Newcomers will just need determination and effort.
For inspiration, members need to see your 2min 40sec
indoor rubber flight.
Given the objective, should the goals be reduced to 1 min for rubber/glider, 30 sec for HLG?
(BTW this is only a
tiny part of the sweepstakes...)
Regards.
Hi all members,
WHY IS THIS A SWEEPSTAKES AND NOT A COMPETITION?
Discussed threadbare last year, and explained by Anwar sir over several posts in this thread:
#13
It is just a mind-set Wink
Plus this is why this was never made a competition. It is just a trigger to get more active in RC, the winning part is strictly in the hands of http://random.org !
#18
I am absolutely serious about random.org. What I do is make a list of all eligible entries in Excel (I sought help on this part last time from other admins), duplicate the ones which qualified for multipliers (so a 3x multiplier would have 3 entries/lines in Excel), assign serial numbers to all of them. So 50 people participating may end up as 120 lines in Excel (because of chance multipliers). Then I open up random.org and call my son, ask him to pick a number between 5 and 10. On random.org, I generate numbers between 1 and 120 as many times as my son responded and take the last one... that is the winning entry.
#21 (comment)
As Anwar sir said somewhere earlier, this is not a competition
Its a sweepstakes. Everyone has a chance.
But someone who submits 5 scratchbuilds has 25 times more chance than someone who submits one ARF.
So let's start building.
If we can cross 65000 builds, we can crash Anwar sir's Excel sheet!
Even though the selection was random, were last year's winners not deserving?

Wouldn't a competition be better than a lottery ? Head Scratching
Anwar sir's reply:
Deep inside my mind, I want newcomers to win. Not veterans with mucho skills aided by disposable income.
The way the sweepstakes are designed allows the disadvantaged a fair chance (thus in line with my ulterior motive).
The only thing we INSIST on is that the rules are followed at every stage. The builds have to be documented from the beginning to end with newspaper dates multiple times, and the maiden video should clearly show the article in rest, going into motion and staying in motion in a single continuous shot.
Basically, we want to see FAIRNESS in the entries. Please spare us from having to second guess the authenticity of anything !
I was against this lottery stuff from the start. What converted me was this sentence in Anwar's post:
"Deep inside my mind, I want newcomers to win"
In the last 3 years that I've seen it, the sweepstakes, with all its faults, succeeded in generating quite some frenetic activity. That, to me, is reason enough to support it.
Regards.

Further to my earlier response, maybe we could modify to
longest duration above the goal, during the sweepstakes periodMore such suggestions welcome. Soon please, so rules can be frozen before start.
Here is one, for example:
Additional multiplier 2x for biplane, 3x for triplane, 2x for 2 motors, 4x for 4 motors, 2x for flapping wings, 2x for canard etc...
What do members say?

"Given the objective, should the goals be reduced to 1 min for rubber/glider, 30 sec for HLG?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Yes goal could be reduced to 1 min for rubber. I recall my struggle to cross the 60 sec mark.
Maybe instead of giving one big prize to one winner spread the prizes to all who cross the 1 min line in the given event time frame. -- Some incentive for every 30 secs over 1 min or some such thing.
and one prize for longest duration. Idea is to make participants strive for greater performance levels.
For HLG-- Yes 30 secs is also not easy. Went onto youtube now just to see some older HLG record flights -- the pros there were in the 45 secs to 60 secs range -- so 30 secs is a tough target.
And as emphasised in the various posts the aim is to get people into the various categories and participate rather than a winner takes it all event.
My suggestion on sweepstakes versus competition... let us have both ! One prize (or set of prizes) decided by random.org and the rest as some competition. Now I am not sure with so many categories, how the competition can be arranged, but this proposal would give us the best of both worlds !

Wow. Good idea.
Hi all,
Those interested to get into rubber duration for this sweepstake will need TAN SS rubber to get flights of any worthwhile duration.
I don't know of any LHS stocking this rubber.
Can get it from here
http://fly-m.com/rubber%20stock.html --- Shipping from this site is cheapest for small quantity. I got some of my rubber from here. No customs problem.
http://www.faimodelsupply.com/?product_cat=tan-super-sport-rubber.
More important you will need rubber of appropriate width depending on model weight, etc.
Can give inputs on these aspects if anyone interested.
For rubber -- Can check out here also and compare total costs including shipping
http://www.freeflightsupplies.co.uk/index.php/products/rubber
He has a lot of other stuff for free flight requirements
Anyone wants plans to scratch build indoor rubber -- I have several plans of models that are suitable for those who have not dabbled in indoor free flight rubber duration before.
And can give some inputs on building them and trimming.
There are roughly 3 1/2 months remaining for 2017 and everyone over here (including me) is asking whether we have 2017 sweepstakes skipping the 2016 sweepstakes.

I think rcrcnitesh is one year ahead of us.
After my impassioned, loquacious, 1000 word defence of the existing Sweepstakes vs Competition policy, the Man himself has expressed an inclination towards competition.
So now I have to do an 'Aaya Ram Gaya Ram'
Aaaargh.
But seriously, on this platform in its present avatar, I dont think it is possible to conduct a meaningful competition in say aerobatics, speed, concours d'elegance, helis, multirotors, cars, boats etc.
Freeflight duration in rubber/ glider/ hlg may be the only events suitable for a competition (thanks to youtube, no need for local FAI observers!)
And this is a predominantly RC oriented forum. FF enthusiast members could be counted on the fingers of one hand...
Increasing the number of prizes is obviously a good idea. But unless the sponsor pool is large enough, the prizes would become insignificant.
So far, only a couple of 10k prizes for sweepstakes, and about half a dozen comp prizes of 1-2k each seem possible.
Like hear from members. Only 4-5 responders so far...
In my opinion the purpose is to encourage many builds and activity in the forum and the sweepstakes is the best option.
If it is competition, people will not involve once they see expert builders logs.

Hi all members,
Did you know that in the Red Bull Air Races, there is no prize money! Only Honour.
I don't know whether people compete on their own, or with sponsor backing...
Nevertheless, prize money is an incentive.
As were the 20k prizes in the RCI Sweepstakes.
There was quite a lot of response.
Then some cooling off, as members (belatedly?) realised it was a sweepstakes, not a competition!
But I'm beginning to wonder:
How many members are interested, either way?
I suspect that many small prizes would elicit far less response than a single prize of 50-100k.
And that a sweepstakes of 50-100k would defeat a performance competition easily.
@anwar sir,
So it boils down to what you/RCI want to achieve
Perhaps you could do a poll on
1. Would you participate in a sweepstakes?
2. Would you participate in a competition?
3. Would you participate in a combined sweepstakes cum competition?
Iamahuman could indicate the number of entries in the last 2-3 years
It may be worthwhile assessing the level of interest before continuing...
While waiting for responses, if any (none in last 24 hours!),
there is at least my online copy of RCSD to fall back upon...
Talking of prize money for competitions, incentives, etc.
I have been a forum member of hippocketaeronautics.com for a couple of years now and was mentored by record holders in my free flight endeavours.
That forum has a lot of info on various competitions. None of them has any prize money. The only goal is to better the existing record.
Off track from this thread,
but my very first post on HPA elicited an immediate response from the legendary Lee Hines.
Different milieu, different concept of achievement, i guess...
RCI Sweepstakes was quite successful.
What can we try now?
Regards.
I don't know exactly but according to me,
Normal sweepstakes is the way to go...
If it is for competitions, many newbies may face difficulties.
This was just opinion.
Regards
Quite right, actually after all of the discussions I also feel that sweepstakes is the way to go. I vote for sweepstakes too.
Aah, how opinions change!
After all that criticism of lottery last year, (and just when Anwar sir said 'Okay, let's have a competition too'), feedback now indicates that members think Sweepstakes is better!
Waiting for last year's data from a moderator about
1. How many participants
2. How many models
3. How many entries after multipliers
How many potential participants would it need to interest potential sponsors?
I mean commercial sponsors of significant prizes, not just well meaning individuals.
What would motivate members? (2 x 20k did motivate them, even if it was a lottery)
I see that competition means 'build quality/intricacy' to some and 'performance' to others.
Build quality/intricacy is subjective. Perhaps better left to sweepstakes as additional entries, depending on scratch built, kit, arf, multi engine, multi wing, flapping wing etc. I dont know what would be the equivalent for boats, cars, DIY projects etc...
As of now, the position (for sweepstakes) seems to be:
1. 10k worth of goods by Anwar sir
2. 10k worth of goods from rchyper by kumaran sir
3. 5k worth of goods from quadkopter by satya sir
4. An airframe from sanjayrai sir (for best coro?)
And for FF competition (performance), 2k worth of goods from any LHS For
1. Best duration over 1 minute in rubber power
2. Best duration over 2 minutes in glider (50m towline, or 10m histart)
3. Best duration over 30 sec in HLG/DLG
Feedback requested soon, so that rules can be frozen by 30th Sep.
Happy participation!
I think that a sweepstake is the more easier route where judges wont have to sit and contemplate on who to award the prize and why. Although I feel there should be some factor considering the skill required to make the models in play. A sweepstakes is only somewhat fair as the more models qualified as entries the more chances you get to win thus build more and this might lead quantity of builds rather than the quality of them.
Also if experts start building multiple models and win only because of having more chances at winning, then the people who can truly use the prize money to kick start their journey in this hobby wont get it. For example, Jana sir who was one of the winners of the 6th sweepstakes is already well established and has a hobby shop. People like KiranRC who actually can use the prize to progress in the hobby should receive it. So a sweepstakes that factors all this when distributing the prize money would be good.

What about a 2 min (maybe even just 1 min) flight by a freeflight or RC model, using solar power alone, without any storage battery? Would deserve a 5k or 10k prize, no?Will anyone sponsor this please?
sir,
As i have a solar plane already built.
Flies at around 2 cell voltage,
i can say that it takes around 3-4 proper months for design process.
You need the best of all the worlds. The best panels, The Most damn efficient motor while being light at the same time....
http://www.outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=3069
If you click on more pics, you can check my plane out.
I had to make tweaks to everything in that plane.(scaled up, better airfoil, weight cutting, much more efficient surfaces).
Maybe solar flight competition is not feasible. just maybe.
I bought Maxeon c60 panels (The most efficient there are @21% efficiency)
i bought and built with balsa and carbon fiber.
I was first trying for freeflight solar but, that was much more harder. (there seem to be very less high efficiency brushed motors out there {especially in india})
So this may not work out.
This was just my little bit of opinion.
Regards.
P.S- my total expenditure was above 6K INR (excluding the tx/rx and esc)
Please note;
my plane does not directly use solar power to fly.
There are 4 lipo batteries each @ 1cell 500mah.
While the panels charge 2 of these batteries, i fly on two, then there is a swap of batteries.
I am still working on swapping the batteries mid-air.

I gather from Anwar sir that in 2015 there were about 65 models from about 40 participants.
But that led to over 170 entries after multiplier!
This year's thread has responses from less than a dozen members.
I wonder if the prize sponsors would be interested in such a small audience?
I suppose that when the sweepstakes are launched, people will automatically participate.....
Yeah.... i am eagerly waiting for official announcement hope others too.......

Looking forward for the day ... Hoping to build some awesome models! :D
Hi all members,
Good to see fresh responses...
Thought of one more category that deserves an award:
Best entry that didn't win lottery!
Provided someone would sponsor (say Rs 5k-10k?)
If someone sponsors, Anwar sir can set up a selection panel...
So looking for sponsors for
1. Solar powered without storage battery
2. Best entry that didn't win lottery
Sir, Can we divide this whole event into 2 categories like Anwar sir suggested. We can try to keep it simple.
@aditya,
It is simple.
It is 2 categories:
1. Sweepstakes for all entries, with bonus entries for intricacy/complications
2. Performance competition for FF (though also eligible for sweepstakes)
Some additions for things not thought of earlier. Which will simply not arise if no one sponsors!
1. Solar. FF or RC. Needs encouraging, IMHO, provided someone sponsors!
2. Being a lottery, the best build (not performance, pl note) may not win.
But may, IMHO, deserve recognition, provided someone sponsors!
Am I missing something? If so please respond on thread or by PM. Thanks
Regards.
@ kiran rc,
Comment?
No responses, suggestions, sponsors in the last 48 hours.
One day left for new inputs, if any.
Then we can freeze the rules and start the 2016 Sweepstakes!
A quick recap.
1. All entries (ie, entrant/model combination) go into a list and get a serial number in the list of entries (LOE)
2. The sweepstakes winner will be (at) the serial number produced by the random number generator on random.org
3. Every entrant/model combo will get bonus entries in the LOE as follows:
a. No bonus entry for ARFs
b. 2 bonus entries for kit built

e. 1 addnl bonus entry for twin engine

I'll try to post the list of entries for all to see, (and if needed, correct bonus entries etc) before we get Anwar sir to use random.org on it!
Will try to answer queries, if any, by tomorrow night...
Regards
Ok,
The rules seems good.
Full throttle for the sweepstakes.
Best of luck everyone.
Regards
So far almost exclusively oriented towards fixed wing aircraft.
Inputs from boat, car, heli guys welcome.
Even within aero, i can think of more categories for bonuses, like Rogallo, VTOL, EDF, solar assist, indoor etc.
Or in the case of boats, multiple masts...
But tomorrow we must freeze the list.
These bonuses/multipliers may look complicated, but actually are not. Just a way to encourage more courageous/adventurous builds.
Like say
A (1) scratch built (+4) solar assist (+1) twin (+1) EDF (+1) Wright Flyer canard (+1) bipe (+1)
I.e, 10 entries from just one model ;D
Rules look great, sir please also include multicopters in list if possible.
I am not that experienced in multicopters that I can suggest a list, but there are several multirotor experienced people like Mr. Satya Gupta of Quadkopters, who can prepare such a list for multirotors too. Please do it sir(s).
Regards,
@dipanjan,
I missed mentioning multirotors. Thanks for reminding!
Multi rotors are eligible for kit built and scratch built bonuses.
If there is anything else that deserves a bonus, pl let me know.
Likewise for cars and boats.
Yesterday i'd mentioned a bonus for boats with more than one mast.
Today i thought of a bonus for multi hull, eg, catamaran,
And one for a hydrofoil!
There would certainly be many such cases that i failed to think of (eg, DIY projects) and which no member reminded me off.
But we have to freeze this tonight.
(Later additions only if approved by Admin ;D)
Regards.
Sir, what about stuff other than R/C? Like building if a model train layout.
I am going to do so, so was asking.
Regards
@prabal276,
Last minute query, eh?
One entry is of course guaranteed.
Along with kit/scratch built bonuses.
Additionally,
I guess a monorail deserves 2 bonus entries.
A maglev deserves at least 4!
I think for exceptional models, we can leave the decision to Admin...
(While i wait for a sponsor for a deserving entry that didn't win the sweepstakes)

Yes, eg, in DIY category.
Would someone, perhaps one of the young aspirants for this year, like to search through old posts, and publish the names of the past winners?
(The search will be worth the effort, I assure you!)
